Middlesbrough aren’t that bad mid table championship side pushing for the playoffs, Carrick is a decent manager.

It is a drop, but he needs actual game time in a settled side.

Surely he felt he was above this level (and therefore above us as a club) hence why going on loan to a PL club though? 

 

Now he's back in this league at a team 26 points behind us.

At least he will be playing every week not like here. Decent player game time will do him good.

Might have just felt Sheffield was the best option open to him, rather than feeling above this level?

Good move for him to try and gain some confidence and reestablish himself. Was never going to look good in the Prem for a team who were inevitably going to lose and concede a lot.
