Leicester City's Steve Cooper spotted at Gresford Athletic
24th June

WREXHAM

A NEWLY-appointed Premier League manager was spotted at a football match in the Wrexham area over the weekend.

Steve Cooper has just recently been appointed as boss of newly-promoted club Leicester City.

The Foxes' previous manager Enzo Maresca took over as Chelsea boss earlier this month, despite having taken Leicester up from the Championship as champions.

Cooper, 44, was previously with Swansea City and Nottingham Forest.

During his playing days, he was a defender who turned out for the likes of Bangor City, Rhyl and TNS and was also on the books of Wrexham AFC.

He began his coaching career at Wrexham's academy before moving to Liverpool and later the England youth set-up, where he went on to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup with the U17's side back in 2017.

Over the weekend, he returned to Wrexham to watch some football unfold.

Fans were surprised to find Cooper at Gresford Athletic Reserves' match against Caerwys Reserves on Saturday (June 22).

FAW referee Lewys Thomson-Williams shared a picture of him with the Premier League manager to X (formerly Twitter).

He said: "What a lovely guy, absolute pleasure meeting him today and to receive refereeing compliments too."

Gresford Athletic commented: "Steve Cooper is a Gresford Athletic Reserves fan, pass it on…

"Great to see the Leicester City Football Club Manager at the game against CPD Caerwys FC Reserves today!"

Even his dogs trying not to be photographed with him.

The bloke is totally obsessed with football which is probably a good thing

iI actually rate that his outfit costs about £30 considering he will have a lot of money. Shows he is down to earth

What a weirdly sneering thing to say lol

I don't think so, just saying he isn't decked head to toe in flash clobber.

He's most likely just been given our budget and is on a scouting mission.

He's trying to offload Danny Ward.

It's generally accepted there is always an equal chance when it comes to managerial appointments working or not, and this one feels very much like that. Part of me thinks Cooper will turn out to be the right fit for where the club is at, but also can't get away from the feeling this appointment doesn't seem right somewhere. Pre-season hasn't exactly been encouraging either.

He may not last that long if we continue playing at the preseason standard. I cannot seeing winning any games, we look like a Division 1 team.

Depends on the start to the season though.

Correct but there are plenty of examples where sacking a manager after 10 games is completely pointless.

"Steve Cooper is enjoying a superb festive period as his Swansea side cruised to a third straight win at home to Leeds. Cooper joined the swans in November after a torrid spell as Leicester City manager, with the club sat on -7 points."

Seems as though he's already running out of ideas and the fact he doesn't have 101 players coming in and out of the door seems to have perturbed him somewhat.

He needs to get a handle on who and what he wants and how we are going to play if we're going to have any sort of season.

He looks pretty clueless at the moment but I have to say we've given him a terrible hand to play.

If he keeps us up with a 4 / 6 penalty point deduction it will be up there with one of the finest achievements in my 50 years of supporting us

Every single Forest fan reckons we’ll love him, seems to be down to earth, completely about the football, ambitious but loyal. I honestly reckon we could have another O’Neil on our hands.

Don't forget what happened the last time we had a bloke come in and change very little.

The fact that we dont have £500m

to be throwing around on new players means he’s going to have to polish some turds and improve some of the deadwood we have sitting around.

Unless some nutty bastard comes in and takes Ward, Soumare and Daka off our hands for a decent fee we’ve still got a lot of the Brendan legacy sitting around eating up a large part of the wage bill.
