I think Netherlands are beatable but I worry about them actually taking the chances they create.

I feel we certainly might need to score 2/3  goals and not sit back on a 1-0 lead if we get one .

Watkins predominantly offers running in behind and pressing, where as Toney offers much more in general play, including being an out ball for Pickford, he can actual win headers, having better hold up play,  running channels, pressing, and the lad has ice in his veins.

Kane average position map in possession had him deeper than both of Englands holding midfielders vs Swiss, in front of the centre backs. He is in the team on reputation alone at the moment, is like playing with 10 men. He made 9 passes, majority in our own half.

Watkins is much more than just running in behind. Not saying he is as good as Toney in the air but Watkins can hold the ball really well.

Watkins is one of those players where you appreciate how good his movement is when you see him live.

Yeah I don’t disagree, he’s a good player, excellent movement as you say. I just prefer Toney for the way England are playing, especially with Pickford forced into going long quite often. He is the best of our forwards to offer that type of out ball and more traditional centre forward hold up play.

Either would be better than Kane on recent evidence.

It’ll never happen, but it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest to see Kane benched.

Have we ever made it this far in a tournament and the press and fanbase aren't behind the style of play or attitude of the coaching staff?  I was born in 89 and I can't think of any.

We have been spoilt recently in terms of getting to the top end of major tournaments so I think it’s a bit taken for granted. Either way the press decided during Saturday’s game that we aren’t going to complain anymore so we all should get onboard

This is actually pretty funny lol

Really enjoyed that.

Looks like a united squad who all get on well with each other to me.

Koeman at his heart is pragmatic himself. I think he'll not play as openly here as he has done against sides he'd have probably backed them to beat - Poland, Romania, Turkey, even Austria in a game that was a bit of a free hit because they were already through. They drew 0-0 with France in the groups. I'm still inclined to think a low scorer.

Well - this is kind of why I asked the question - because it could certainly be argued that Watkins profile might be a better fit for this game?

Might be a bit awkward then !

Been a FIFA official for a while I think though .

Nice excuse lined up for if we get beaten. They love playing the victim this group

The last time we played them in a tournament if you don't include the nations league. Quite like it when you get a fixture like that where you'd expect it happened often but it hasn't. This probably applies to both semis.

This remains my favourite night as an England fan. An incredible performance.

Weirdly our 0-0 draw against the Netherlands was arguably our best performance of Italia ‘90. Everybody thought they were vastly superior to us but we went toe-to-toe with them. Our narrow wins against Egypt, Belgium and Cameroon were less impressive, I felt.

Yeah, that Dutch team of 90 were class and still had many of the same players as the Euro 88 winning squad.

We should have beat them in that group game really, we had plenty of chances. Gazza absolutely running the show.

I remember that evening very very well. I don't think there's another few hours from those years I remember so vividly to be honest. Where I was sitting, who I was with, the weather and the smell of our garden outside the window.

I love the understated commentary. None of these ridiculous pre-prepared alliterations etc

The great Brian Moore, with Kevin Keegan.

Three of the four teams in the semis have been pretty average to put it politely this tournament. The Dutch finished 3rd in their group, and in any other tournament would already be on the plane home, the French have only scored 2 own goals and a penalty and have arguably been worse than England. Spain are the only team so far who can say they’ve had a decent tournament.
There’s a lot to criticism of England, but this is a tournament and the only thing that matters is getting through to the next stage. We’ve now had three semi finals in the last four tournaments- we’ve never had that sustained levels of achievement in our history. Southgate is clearly doing something right.

The Italian teams did it for years at major tournaments winning world cups and euros by doing enough to get through without ever entertaining and at times relying on individual brilliance from world class players - not sure they ever had the level of criticism that is thrown at this England team.

We are still in the tournament and have a chance of winning it. It’s time to back the lads and enjoy the ride.

Imagine the poor old Holland fans not being able to understand the English fans English!

I agree. But I’d be absolutely amazed IF Kane doesn’t start. I’d bring Toney on at half time IF Kane isn’t playing well again and looks tired. But again that won’t happen. Southgate will start Kane and even IF he is playing rubbish again then he will only sub him with ten minutes to go and only then IF we are losing. This is just a guess from Southgate’s previous team selections and his past game management.
