But that was the following season, after we had signed a number of experienced pro’s - and with the remainder of the squad having experienced a season in the Premiership. Two of our other key additions that season - Okazaki and Fuchs - had played at Bundesliga level for many seasons and were vastly experienced outside of the Premier League.

Popular Post Matt Posted 22 August 2024 Popular Post Posted 22 August 2024 (edited) I’m not excited by it, nor am I impressed or enthused. However, I mentioned in pre season when everyone was saying bad everything was that our best seasons have come off the back of awful pre seasons and our worst seasons have come off the back of great pre seasons. Likewise I’ve noticed a trend on here whereby players who sign and are hyped up usually turn out to be pretty average, terrible or outright failures and some of our best players are written off, not really cut it elsewhere, misfits. I also said earlier this week that people need their expectations tempering a little bit, they need to realise where we are in the food chain, the damage that was done 2-3 years ago has lead us to this point. Popular Post AKCJ Posted 22 August 2024 Popular Post Posted 22 August 2024 (edited) Got no issue with it presuming he's not seen as the goalscorer we lack. Offers a tremendous amount off the bench or starting in the tougher matches. The only worry I have is contract length given he's 33 in a few weeks time. 2 years would be fine by me or 2 with an option of a 3rd. Think too many are looking at this as being uninteresting or unexciting and I get that because he doesn't score or assist enough but honestly a lot of you are in for a shock at just how effective he is at releasing pressure for his team. He's a ****ing nightmare to play against when you're chasing a game and bringing him off the bench in scenarios like we saw on Monday night will get him a lot of plaudits from even the most staunch Foxestalker. So yeah, he's not a goalscorer but his value is in how good he is at defending from the front. The main thing now is to make sure we get that guaranteed goal threat that can play in the 9 or the 10. RonnieTodger Posted 22 August 2024 Posted 22 August 2024 Reminds me of when I played FM for the first time and was pleased to sign anyone. I bought David Healy for Liverpool. 3

STUHILL Posted 22 August 2024 Posted 22 August 2024 Ayew was likely identified early but was our 4th or 5th choice. We are now desperate and so Palace put us over a barrel with the price. I think he will be a useful addition and contribute, but yet again, we have overpaid and had to settle on our 4th/5th choice. You just have to hope that we pull something out the hat with two more coming in, with clubs like Chelsea suddenly having to push players out. It has been a very disappointing window so far, and of all seasons, we really needed a surprisingly good one.

Really hope all the people on here crying about it have enough balls to offer up a cup of fanny juice. Not really sure what that means, but it made me laugh!
LeePhilpottsBaldSpot Posted 22 August 2024 Posted 22 August 2024 (edited) The price really isn't that much. £1.7m per season, rising to £2.7m if we stay up. His g/a isn't great but Palace fans really rate him. I bet he'll have a more positive impact while costing a lot less than a lot of our more glamorous signings like Ayoze Perez, Ahmed Musa and Patson Daka. Edited 22 August 2024 by LeePhilpottsBaldSpot
Dahnsouff Posted 22 August 2024 Posted 22 August 2024 Depends on his position in the pecking order, but don’t hate it if he is backup, late sub. There is no resale question to answer here as that is clearly not relevant to this type of signing. 1
Muzzy_no7 Posted 22 August 2024 Posted 22 August 2024 Brentford, Bournemouth, Fulham, Palace, Brighton Forest etc all making multiple good signings splashing bare cash while the 15/16 PL winners, 2021 FA Cup winners 2021 Charity shield winners and team that finished 5th twice, stink the place out with Jordan Ayew because of a rule made to protect the ‘big 6’. Stinks. **** PSR 4
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 22 August 2024 Posted 22 August 2024 Hideous awful signing ****ing pathetic in all honesty shouldnt go near a player 30 plus who scores 3 goals a season let alone paying money for him 3
Paninistickers Posted 22 August 2024 Posted 22 August 2024 Tis what it is. Just gotta hope he does a job in a way, say, a washed up Willian did for Fulham.. But, it's just sound destroying as it would be for Palace to buy Marc Albrighton off us for 8m and paying him 50k a week for the next three years.

The positions are not comparable even slightly - we have been promoted after being relegated.

Buzzell Posted 22 August 2024 Posted 22 August 2024 If he works his bollocks off for the team then brilliant. If he comes in half arsed then he can piss off.

Richard Posted 22 August 2024 Posted 22 August 2024 Literally every comment by a Palace fan on the Athletic article is gutted he's going and say he will be missed 1
Filbert Fireworks Posted 22 August 2024 Posted 22 August 2024 Courses for horses with this one. Gives tge team the option to bring on / start a hardworking player who can defend from the front. A good quality for some scenario's. Think we all know he isn't coming for gis goals and assists. A team is greater than the sum of its parts and all that.

People need to let go of our league win and European campaigns. It’s giving people unrealistic ideas of the type of player we should try and sign. atm hes not good enough for palace, as he hasnt been starting and hes not been offered a new deal.... and im not against signing at all, Im against the price tag, that much for a 32/33yr old, its alot of money considering the state finance wise we are in

PSR wise that's the equivalent of signing a player for £20mil on a 5 year deal. Give us a transfer ban now please FA, we will be a lot better off.
