I notice Villa fans are starting to get grumpy at Emery, completely missing the point that the system means that they literally have zero chance at competing in both the league and champions league.

If he really cared about his religion, then I highly doubt a sponsor would refuse a players' request not to wear a sponsor if it interferes with their beliefs. After all that'd be bad PR "Company forces player to stand against his beliefs". But it isn't about religion and has never been. It's just a veil for archaic ideology.

It's not even like he's from the Middle East or Africa where homophobia not just part of their upbringing but also a huge part of their society. He was born in Wolverhampton and grew up there. That'd be like a player from South London refusing to wear a message against racism.

You want him to wear an armband promoting diversity, because diversity is good, unless it is religious diversity?  Not sure I understand your point.  An awful lot of religious people pick and choose which part of their religious teaching they follow.  Suck it up.

Just because he was born in Wolverhampton doesn’t mean he can’t have religious beliefs though lol Also not sure it’s comparable to someone not wearing a racism message because they’re from South London either. That just doesn’t make any sense.

Money talks unfortunately. Why do you think players get booked for taking their shirt off? A lot of it is down to the sponsors. A player scores a goal and all focus from the tv goes on to that player. When the sponsor isn’t being shown, said sponsor who has paid out money isn’t very happy.

Would you show support for something you don’t believe in? Whether it’s ethical or not.

I get your point and agree. I would say the sponsors would have a lot to say about it though. They’re paying to have that on shirts. The rainbow campaign is a show of support.

Isn't there precedent from a while back? Papis Cisse I think, refused to wear a sponsor on religious grounds? I can't actually remember if he got his way or not but I remember it being a thing.

If one of our players refused to proudly don the famous BC.GAME sponsored shirt then I'd seriously question their commitment to our club and it's commercial partners.

That was with Wonga. Even so, said player was caught playing blackjack in a casino around the same time lol

TBF, a lot of secular people, in fact, let's say everyone, picks and chooses what they want to believe. That's why it's a belief.

I'd rather someone just be honest.

"I'm not comfortable wearing something that promotes gay acceptance". Plenty of religious people accept it or are gay themselves. At least I can respect if someone says "I'm not comfortable with it" because then we can either work to educate or just ignore him.

I cannot stand someone hiding behind religion as an excuse. Own it.

No punishment. A commonsense approach on this incident

He's received a 'formal reprimand'. I think it renders the campaign meaningless if you basically instruct people how they have to follow it.

Hes done it specifically over a rainbow flag but has never done it before on standard armbands. Coincidence? Religion creates bigotry

Ridiculous. Neither Morsy nor Guehi should have any scrutiny for their actions, nor should anyone who did choose to wear the armband.

Tbf speaking to him is a better approach as it gives him a platform to discuss the issue. He’s worn the symbol they’ve asked him to, just dressed it up to reflect additional personal beliefs. Played a blinder tbf lol

'..... work to educate' just sounds so arrogant. Sorry, not everyone needs to be educated into celebrating someone's sexualty.

While I can see that point of view and respect it might seem like it's celebrating - most people don't care if a stranger is gay, I will say campaigns like this are needed as I have friends who would rather not be threatened with violence when they're out an about.

Footballers wearing a rainbow flag should just send the message of "these people are out there, they're doing no harm, leave them alone."
