interesting statement, no replacement lined up, mentioning the youth team suggests no money in January, blaming the difference between the two leagues and thanking the fans for their “positivity”

Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges that we would face this year as we readjusted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world.

“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board have supported Russell and his staff and been open and transparent regarding our expectations. We have all been on the same page in recognising the urgency of needing results to improve.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months. Everyone connected with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season, especially the Play-Off Final win in May.

“Current Under-21s Manager Simon Rusk will take charge of the team on an interim basis until we announce a permanent replacement.

“Behind the scenes, we are encouraged by the continued development of talent coming through our Academy. We are proud of the contributions our young players are making and are confident this will remain a source of strength and pride for everyone associated with the club.

“We are also deeply grateful for the continued support and positivity shown by our fans. We are witnessing first-hand the significant gap between the Championship and the Premier League, but your understanding and passion, even when results have not been what we all want, continue to drive our long-term commitment to the club.”

Could be too late for Southampton, 9 points I think from safety. That job will be hard to recruit for.

Moyes I think will go Southampton, I expect he'll be the only candidate that may apply for the job.

I think whoever goes in will want assurances they'll have chance to get them back up. It's free hit at this point too. Could argue it's more risky taking a job like ours reputation wise where the team is out the relegation zone but we all know that's just by some good fortune.

Man City’s current streak reminds me of liverpool a few seasons ago. They lost a few home games on the spin and looked like the wheels had really fallen off. Klopp got them back on the horse and they came with a run to take a top four spot.

Southampton another club who was once great at recruiting both good players and managers not so long ago and when they sold a top player and they were able to replace them very quickly. Just seem to gone wrong since covid times around the same time Leicester, in fact similar to Leicester in some ways.

Danny Rohl is an obvious choice, done incredibly well at Sheff Weds, was Hassenhuttls assistant… if they go down with him he’d be a great shout to get them back up after a reset.

Probably won't want to go to a bit of a lost cause although Southampton fans think they have had the squad to do better.

Well guess it wouldn't be hard!

Would they dare go out spend the millions in getting Big Sam.

If I remember rightly, it was Wilcox (now of United) who they brought in from Man City who hired Martin. The ownership there obviously has this love affair with the Pep way. You’d assume they would still go down that route.

Poor Martin walking off into the tunnel with no sunset. Cut a very lonely figure. He must have known he was gonna get the chop after that game

I read somewhere that their net spend was circa 70m. the dice has already been rolled. No way they could pump more in without guaranteeing a fail of ffp.

Short of Dibbling and maybe THB I’m not sure that they’ve got sellable assets. Although I should shut up because we’d be daft enough to pay 25m for Kyle walkers-Peter’s

And before that it was Rodgers (again, ouch) and Advocaat in 2015.

Although I think Advocaat resigned.
