Strange that

Charisma carries you further than ability, even in football it seems.

(not saying Cooper was in any way the right choice for the job, mind)

Weird take. Look at the poll. (Cooper was proven s**t. Folks seem to be getting to that point with Ruud, the only mitigating factor being that he inherited some of Cooper's crap signings.)

Employing Cooper and not getting Coberan in was worst decision

I mean my personal pick would have been Corberan in the summer however with the beauty of hindsight did you see how many draws and the lack of goals scored under him at WBA?

Given people bemoaned Cooper and now RVN about lack of creation, lack of SOT, lack of goals i'm not sure Corberan would have been any more suitable or appease those issues.

I'll caveat that and reiterate once again by saying I don't think it matters who manages us, these players and this club are unmanageable in it's current state.

Perhaps it's an ego thing Rodgers did the same.

I think the difference is, we don't sign Ayew/Skipp/Okoli/BDR under Corberan. Maybe we miss out on BEK but frankly I'd rather we the chance that we signed five 6/10+ players than one 8/10 and four 3/10s

Our fate was really sealed when Chelsea came in for Maresca. It really was a killer blow.

I largely agree, but there was always a question of if Maresca would have got found out too. You can bet that for the first 5 games, he absolutely would have played a high line with Vestergaard in it too.

That said, from what I have seen at Chelsea, I think he would have changed the lineup at minimum and most likely would have changed the build up shape. For example, he was using a 4141 in the defensive phase earlier in the season whilst Chelsea were getting to grips with his system so protect them a bit better.

It wouldn't surprise me if Ruud if manager of a Championship Leicester City also smashed that league, but the Premier League is such a massive gulf in class. It says a lot that only once in history have 2 teams gone up from the Championship with such high points tallies in us and Ipswich, and yet both teams have stunk the place out.

He would have at least brought a culture and a easy transition from Enzo's football and back room regime.

Cooper was the complete opposite of what we had been doing and investing in (players).

We then went and spent 25m on Skipp and 8m on Ayew who we probably never would have bought under Corberan.

That was where we ****ed up.

Corberan is currently as much out of his depth at Valencia as Cooper and RVN were/are here.

Players signed: Don't we? For sure?

I'll make a point I made in this very thread only a few weeks ago. Infact i'll quote it.

05/01/2025

"Why was Coady and Cannon bought then not played when Enzo was here? A waste of £14m. (I genuinely don't see Enzo 'having' those 2 and believe very much they were signed over his head)

Why was Souttar, Kristiansen, Daka, Soumare, Vestergaard, Bertrand (Free, but wages..) bought and not played when Rodgers was here? A waste of around £87m.

Now this is no defence of Cooper, it's simply making the comparisons and points, neither am I going to sit here and say Cooper was no part of it (I'd be a hypocrite and contradicting myself I did) because when people claim "Rodgers wasn't backed" I like to point out he was backed, very much so, to the tune of £200m, buying shite, leaving us in the mess we're currently in, of course he had a part in it but like Cooper cannot be solely blamed.

Meanwhile, as I pointed out yesterday, RVN hasn't brought or been allowed his own staff, so by that metric we're still left with the same staff, same scouts, same moneymen that recruited under Cooper. Yippee!"

When was the last time a manager actually signed and hand picked players here?

Both appointments are seemingly terrible, simple as that.

We appointed a cheap option in Cooper who was readily available and a big name as a player who had relatively little managerial experience. Only ourselves to blame.

Cooper was wrong, which in turn brough the wrong players in. He ran a poor preseason and the beginning of the campaign. Appointment of Ruud was a gamble, but he's never been given the fair tools to tackle it. 1 player in, 2 coaches that took an age, the promise of signings and delivered not what he needs. Ruud is accountable for today, for sure but I don't think he should have been picked in the first place.

Board members accountable for those decisions are still at the club. For good sake, top they are failing you.

Probably under Puel and Pearson before that both times we went on and won something

bit harsh… first four league games against Madrid, Sevilla, Sociedad and Barcelona and he’s got 4 points from the games against Sevilla and Sociedad that you’d expect them to compete in…

Yeah, but it's self inflicted.

We are Ricky, Wilf, Abdul, Stephy and KDH short of last season. We needed all that AND two improvements.

We had enough of a basis to make staying up relatively realistic.

We've blown it. Like last time playing 26 games minus a goalkeeper. This time we have regularly played players - Vards, JJ, Coady, BdcR, Ayew, McAteer -  who wouldn't (and didn't) automatically make the championship starting xi last season.

You know what, he played a high line today for no reason. He’s caused us to collapse in 3 absolutely massive games. 2 at home. Not making a sub today at half time was ridiculous. I haven’t got time for him. He needs to go.

He's totally out of his depth, clearly.

Sacking Cooper was the right call. But replacing him with someone worse and totally ill matched for the job wasn't.

I think our problem was we needed a larger investment in the squad over the season, but our 3 year PSR figures have restrictedus from doing that. The Leeds game last season showed we were mentally and physically weak, we knew Enzo ball would need better players or we'd have to change the system, unfortunately our limitations meant we've done neither. Enzo ball relied on pacy tricky wingers, and relies on playing out from the back after bringing the team on to you, but we hoof it out from the back, and if we gain possession, we try playing Enzo ball but with slow wingers, we play a high line but with slow defenders and a centre forward that's too old to press.

Think he's got to go with 3-5-2. I'd be tempted to play facundo and vardy up front

Whoever plays Wout Faes must be thick!
