Whatever you do, don’t look at footy insider.

Has Wayne Veysey just typed this up for his GCSE English paper or are we doomed to get Brussel?

As reported elsewhere - the renowned Football Insider website has an 'exclusive', that we're in, "advanced talks to appoint Russell Martin"!

That, after this:-

I really don't share the crazy pessimism if we do get Russell Martin. Are there concerns about his adaptability if we got promoted? Obviously, the same was with Maresca.

We had (and have) a much better squad than Southampton - this season and last so the comparisons make little sense. If Southampton slapped us twice last season would people want him then? If we never signed Vest/Bertrand would it be better then? Seems a bit stupid to keep banging on about these things.

Ruud slapped us twice - what an audition that proved to be.

I have more faith in him than Ruud to put out a team that resembles one being coached to get us out of the division. He's more likely going to get us back up as well than Ruud. Dyche just makes no sense (it maybe did after Cooper).

People are genuinely acting Martin is Wayne Rooney-level? "The worst ever" and all this I've seen on Twitter. Seems wayyyyy too dramatic. Also keeping Ruud over Martin? Has anyone actually been watching the games? Even the Ipswich win wasn't exactly impressive.

If we appointed Scott Parker without doing what he's done at Burnley - I am sure the views and chat would be very similar to RM.

Scott Parker has done it with Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley though, not sure many could sniff at that pedigree.... even if he is a boring willy puller lol

He's awful. His style doesn't work as he cannot set up a defence at all. Even last season, the amount of goals Southampton conceded was appalling. Birmingham got relegated and they only conceded 2 more than Southampton.

Just because he might be better than RVN is not a reason to hire him. We need someone considerably better than both.

His arrogance and stubbornness will also be his undoing. No good trying to play "the right way" when you're getting pumped every week and conceding at least 3 goals..

Re Martin, he explained his style / philosophy last season as being about moving up the pitch together as a unit and outnumbering / overloading areas as you advance but in a patient way, eventually playing your football in the final third where your overload hurts them (50 passes to gain 10 yards of territory), I don't see why you'd want someone who plays that way when you have the flair and relative pace of Fatawu, Mavididi, Monga, Alves etc, it's like you'll be stilting their natural instinct to break quickly. Yes we had all that with Maresca, Mavididi would wait patiently with time for a sandwich and cup of tea whilst Vestergaard, Ricardo and Winks passed the opposition into exhaustion but at least they had free reign in the final third to come alive and hurt the opposition. With Martin it sounded like even the final third was patiently structured, like Wengers Arsenal trying to walk it into the goal,  just without the world class talents.

And B) He reminds me of Nick Knowles, so it's a no from me.

At least with Dyche there is a % of the fanbase that want him, and even though i don't want him i get why people do.

Surely, no one (and i mean no one!) wants Russell Martin?

Far bigger problems than him now. Not a fan but we are doing our best to make the job as least attractive as possible.

To give a bit of credit to Russell, he has a solid enough history with younger players, he has a Championship promotion on his CV, Southampton’s out of possession work the last time they were in the Championship actually makes good reading, they led the pressing statistics and created the most shots from high turnovers.

But it’s his in possession tactics that are nauseating. I posted this stat a while back, in the Championship two seasons ago…

10+ Pass Sequences

2) Leicester - 875

1) Southampton - 1,042

It’s basically Maresca ball but on steroids.

No thank you.
