Three and a half years ago Boris Johnson was still Prime Minister. There's a long way to go.

Exactly so, and a lot can happen in that amount of time.

Bit of international news:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm27ke33gvmo

A statue of a Confederate general that was torn down and set on fire in 2020 during social justice protests in Washington has been reinstalled under orders from President Donald Trump.

General Albert Pike's statue has long been a source of controversy, as have many Confederate monuments across the US which were erected decades after the Civil War.

The National Park Service announced in August its plan to return the refurbished statue, after Trump signed an executive order called "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History".

Democratic Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, who represents the District of Columbia, called the restoration “offensive to members of the military who serve honorably”.

On Monday afternoon, videos showed the area surrounding Pike's statue in Washington with a sign that read "Area close. Historic preservation work in progress".

"The restoration aligns with federal responsibilities under historic-preservation law and recent executive orders to beautify the nation’s capital and restore pre-existing statues," the National Park Service in a statement.

Never thought I'd see the NPS endorse those who fought treasonously to maintain chattel slavery and thus endorse the legacy of it. Of course, such a thing is par for the course for this particular administration.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c891ex72nj7t

Ceasefire (noun): A state of reduced direct fighting engagement where one side has a free hand to strike against the other as they wish with next to no retaliatory engagement allowed from the other side.

...apparently.

Looks like Merriam-Webster, Oxford Publishing et al need to update their dictionaries!

I think it's more likely that the Reform vote will harden to be honest. Another episode in the last few hours.

If the misinformation-backed digital era status quo continues, that is a distinct possibility.

Of course, Boris looked to have a bulletproof majority, and so did Starmer, looking at pure numbers, and it would only take something that takes the minds of some people away from "legitimate concerns" (or the sophisticated con job they're being fed regarding such, those speech marks are doing a lot of work) to change the situation somewhat.

Or perhaps that thing doesn't arrive, and things play out the way depicted here. Good news... for everyone in one particular demographic, which I suspect precious few of the contributors here are in. Look at Trump's USA right now for comparison.

Terrible how that British guy died yesterday at the hands of a afghan immigrant, yet hardly newsworthy, I wonder why.

More on this, in case anyone wants some context.

I'm not sure featuring reasonably high on the main BBC News website and being on both lunchtime and evening national news reports yesterday really counts as "hardly newsworthy", though.

It’s everywhere . Can barely go a week here without this kind of Farage-ist virtue signalling these days.

The top two news articles on BBC 5-Live at the moment are, 1: the deportation of the accidently released sex offender, and 2: the murder by an Afghan in Uxbridge. Jamaica and Gaza come afterwards.

Depending on which stats you look at, about 535-550 people were murdered in the UK last year (down on previous years).

Admittedly, some incidents involve the murder of more than 1 person, but that rate equates to about 1.5 murders per day.I certainly don't see 1-2 murders being reported every day on mainstream media, so a fair few murders aren't mentioned at all.

I'm guessing that the only reason this isolated stabbing was reported is precisely because the alleged murderer being Afghan gave it some limited newsworthiness....as opposed to, say, some gang member killed by another gang or a "routine" domestic murder. Of course, some murders get more media coverage due to their shocking nature: e.g. the Southport attacks, the synagogue murder (+1 accidentally shot by the police), the Sheffield school stabbing.

Same with missing people in fact most serious crimes. They need some unique feature to elevate them to the front page often something socially unacceptable.

Tell me then why do you think you have decided to highlight this one rather than the other 40-50 that have occured this month.  Also why you claimed media were not mentioning it when they very clearly were. Sounds to me like you are playing the white man victim card.

I’m going to pop my head above the parapet, as it seems a pile on. A stabbing in broad daylight like this is pretty shocking. The footage showed a frenzied attack, presumably a random attack given two other people were involved too - one seriously hurt with life changing injuries. I’d expect this murder to be quite different in nature to the other 40-50 that occurred this month.

I suspect that many of those 40-50 stabbings were done by non-white people on white people with no victim card being played. This one is highlighted in the public eye due to the current national debate.

The police have learnt to release the details very rapidly in these cases to avoid the online speculation frenzy.
