I don’t doubt we can afford £5m without selling anyone else. But that isn’t the big issue here. Our squad is bloated. We have 32 players who could seemingly make a match day squad. We probably need to send a load of kids out on loan and then sell a few before we can get anyone in.

Personally, I’m not too worried. I don’t think we need anyone else if we don’t sell anyone. This squad walks back into the PL if managed correctly and then we have an entire season with no transfer fees being paid. That could set us up to spend a bit more when back in the PL.

Having said all of that, I’ll be ok with signing this kid.

I say just pay the 5m. That sell on clause could end up costing us millions more…

There will be a sell on clause whatever we pay. (Within reason).

I hear this a lot. But, surely, take away the youngsters, which are trying to break into the squad, and we've got a squad of about 24 to 25 (and that includes Monga and Nelson, the more established young uns). perfectly manageable with room for one more

I don't really buy this line

It's looking like Ndidi to Besiktas is sorted, so hopefully a bid goes in later today.

£11mil for Coady and Wilf, £5mil for Kone, and imo id say thats our business about done this summer

No chance. We've not even touched the loan market yet and there's players still at the club that are barely going to get a kick and will want to get a loan out if nothing else.

I'm fairly confident we'll see a striker and a midfielder of some various quality come in.

Kone for ~5 and Brownhill on a free wouldn't be surprising.

Or, actually, Kone at all would still surprise me quite frankly as I still think the club are more likely to bottle it and go for "proven experience" and spuff it away on shit like Bamford. But that's my pessimism getting to me.

Really, a striker is the only position we NEED in the strongest sense of the word.  Or at least, that has to be the absolute priority above anything else…

I mean that risk is absolutely there with the regime we have. But also with this regime we are very much manager led. Last years stupid of all stupid windows was very much led by Cooper who should never have been at that level.

Kone will be a Marti target I’m sure of it. Very much on Glover’s list but a Marti target no less. The only time Glover has looked competent is the window under Maresca where he did find guys like Mavididi, Fatawu and Mads - if the manager pays ball, he isn’t recommending £25m Oliver Skipp it seems.

It would be nice to be the club that nabs a player's services from under another one's nose for a change - it's happened too often in recent years due to our snail's pace approach to negotiations.

That said, maybe it's just my Piroe PTSD, but this just reeks of a prem club like Leeds or Everton swooping last minute to get him in as a squad player.

I must say I've been pleasantly surprised with our activity so far, certainly in terms of trimming the fat, especially if the Wilf deal goes ahead. But we've shot ourselves in the foot leaving everything so late for bringing others in (as usual), we're almost certainly going to be stuck in deadline day bidding wars again if an embargo doesn't cut us off before then.

All the youngsters are in the squad so what’s not to buy?

I think it was highlighted we had 28/29 players that would need to be registered in order to play recently.

And whilst the youngsters that don’t need registering might not seem a problem… if that takes you upwards of 30 first team pros, that means less coaching contact time and you’ll have a significant number of players that won’t make the squad each week, making it much harder to manage across the piece.

D J Barry has articulated what I was getting at (see above) much better than i could

I was just relating to the registering of numbers for the 'first team squad'. Having 28 senior pros is fine. The youngsters who will suffer. But still room for the good ones: Monga and Nelson. I don't see the problem to be honest

Im just not that convinced that Kone is as good as is being made out on here.

I think rotating in Jake Evans with Ayew and Daka with the aim of making him our long term first choice striker is a bold decision but also the right decision. He certainly has a far higher ceiling than Kone.

Did Evans sign a new contract?
