New captain

Pre-season almost complete, and still no real idea of who our new capo will be. I acknowledge that we need strong leaders across the pitch, and there are still personnel changes to come - but it still needs sorting.

 

I've got nothing to base this on, as I don't recall him wearing the armband at all yet - but have a feeling Chaplin might get the nod. It feels like we need a new face for a fresh start. So, who do you reckon?

Should be a youngster. We don't want senior players getting in the way of the academy players developing leadership skills.

I guess they don't want to announce someone as captain and then see them sold a week later. I imagine most of the 'captains' are either unpopular with us the fans and/or up for sale.

I think it's pretty obviously going to be Hamza isn't it? Unfortunately

Chaplin was in and around the captaincy at Ipswich.

 

I'd give it to him to be honest. Someone fresh to come in and set standards. I think giving it to someone that has been a part of what has happened here in the last 5 years is a mistake.

Like many others, I hope his appearances might be too infrequent for him to be captain.

He was part of the leadership group and occasional captain at Ipswich, but now might be his time.

I largely agree with this, but with one caveat... Nelson if he's happy buckle down and perform if he stays. We don't need a wantaway player as captain.

The benefits of Russell Martin is that he’ll make bigger decisions than his predecessors and I’m therefore certain it’ll be Chaplin. It simply has to be.

A lot of modern centre backs who can play with the ball get a hell of a lot of revisionism when it comes to their defending. 

 

Nelson has been very inconsistent for us. Arguably more bad games than good. In fairness to him, it was hardly a good time to come into the team but I don't think many fans would be upset if we got a decent fee for him.

We should probably wait a couple more weeks before deciding on a captain. Who knows who will be coming or leaving out the door…

Neither of them should be anywhere near it but it will probably be Choudhry or Thomas

I actually don't think it will be Hamza or he'd have done it all pre season. I think he's actively looking for something new. Be interesting to see who is captain of the day tomorrow - Would imagine it is Chaplin's turn next. 

 

Maybe he's still waiting on a signing before confirming it -  if there's some truth in Souttar (John) and we get that over the line maybe he would be a prime candidate.

At the end of the day, does it really matter? I'm sure 'captain' in 2026 isnt the same as it was in the 00's or before. 

 

Only asking because i never see any difference from the player when they have the armband or not. Maybe i'm missing something?
