Ipswich 3-1 LCFC, FT thread

I get that some on here are focussing more on how far we have fallen. When you put it in context, trying to be positive after being beaten by Ipswich is laughable.

 

But personally I am looking for anything positive that will indicate to me we are turning a (very) slow corner. I saw examples of that last night, some fast transitions, exciting play. That was enough for me and some others to hope for green shoots of recovery, however fleeting they may be. 

 

I just want to see a mentality shift - we have had the same losing mentality for years now which is one of the main causes of our decline. I'm sick of football being about what's happening off the pitch, I just want to see my team back and bossing matches.

As with Joseph against Notts County, good to see players scoring and celebrating like they actually give a shit and like the club.

Exactly. Ipswich couldn’t even beat us last year when we were disgustingly bad!

They are not a very good team.

Admittedly, I only watched the first half but genuinely proud of the performance. We played with purpose and quality and I think the lads can hold their heads high.

 

More of that in the league and I imagine the results will follow and hopefully the atmosphere will improve too

We still move the ball like a team much higher up the leagues at times. Move the ball with that intensity in league games and teams won't live with it. It's annoying as personally I feel we're actually on a half decent path but I worry that Rudkin still has too much influence over the team selection and Martin won't dial it back from 11/10 Martin ball to maybe just 8/10 Martin ball to give us a bit of freedom.

Before the changes i felt we had a chance , still played better than previously after them but it just felt like heads dropped to me,,,,,maybe it was just mine and the wifes....

Looked very good in spells but the inevitable individual mistakes caused by overplaying at the back continue. A drive for show, putt for dough performance.

In just over a year we are worlds apart

 

Ipswich were able to keep the team together, (kept quiet about promotion), played simple solid football and were able to get back into the prem

 

Then they beat us with their B team 😂

The result was disappointing but on a positive note it was good to see players in our shirt who actually looked like they wanted to play for us.

 

I get why people are saying last season we beat Ipswich etc but last season and the ones before have gone. Our fall is disgusting and down to terrible management but I'm not going to berate the players that played last night for this. What I saw last night was at least a team that tried, actually played some decent football at times and didn't look like they gave up. 

My take from the game is that there are some positive signs but also a few worrying ones.

I'd like to see Aluko given an extended run at CB.  Though he looked quite decent there. But he needs pairing with a decent player.

McFarlane looked promising at left back.

Howell looked a very decent prospect on the right.

Page was one of the best players on the pitch until he tired in the last few minutes.  Need to build our midfield around him.

Chaplin looks like he will be an asset when he's fully fit.

 

On the flip side

None of our keepers look good enough.  Certainly not to play the way we are trying to now.

We look very lightweight up top.  Not convinced we have the strikers good enough to score the goals we will need and we create too few chances.

The subs offered virtually nothing. Reid and Cullen look pointless right now and I'm not really sure what Burns will offer either.

This trying to pass out from the back will lead to us conceding every game with the players we have at the moment.

Yep we are no good at passing from the back anymore. These current players can't do it. Now just a waiting game to see how long it takes Russell to work it out and switch tactics

To sum up: Our keepers are poor, our defense is poor, we don't create chances and when we do we don't have the quality up front to finish them off,  we have no squad depth and no prerequisites for our manager's preferred style. Sounds uplifting indeed.

Looked competent. Occasionally overhit a pass but sensibly solid and can get in decent attacking positions too
