Thoughts on the experienced signings so far?

I wasnt happy we brought them in, but for those who watched the game, what are the thoughts on how they playing, fitness, work rate, quality, etc.

Remember Pearsons experienced signings like Wasyl, Hammond, GTF? They were good pro’s to have around the squad, but could also make an impact on the pitch when called upon.

 

McCarthy, Cullen, Chaplin, Burns, etc have no positive impact on the pitch even at League one level and will be joining Thomas, Skipp and Reid in the bomb squad. 
 

I am disappointed we didn’t build more around our youth prospects. Riley Carr and Evans are obvious upgrades on Burns / Cullen and Logan Briggs would’ve died on the pitch for us whereas Chaplin is nowhere to be seen. 
 

Once again the squad build has been mismanaged by the higher ups.

The two that have been around a while - compared to others - and have had more of a chance to bed in look particularly shit. I.e. Burns the Josh Low regen and Cullen who was dropped completely after a few games. McCarthy has had his moments I suppose, but also looks like another iffy signing and he’s going to be first choice all season.

 

We all know what relegation looks like, and has anyone seen anything to suggest that won’t happen again?

None of them have done anything of note. All they're all on long deals with no hope of shifting them really.

It's relative though.  We have vastly different resources to when we signed the OG deadwood.

Oxford were physical and bullied our younger players off the ball. The experienced players did not counter act this and BDCR seemed to be player chasing back the most but wasn’t always effective at it.

 

i didn’t feel confident seeing Souttar commanding the passing and inviting pressure with McCarthy behind him but I don’t think that’s where we lost the ball.

Burns and Cullen have added absolutely nothing to the squad whatsoever.

 

Zero impact and it seems zero clue as well. Cullen not even in the squad yesterday and Burns should join him next weekend. They are dross

I am worried that Chaplin is a sick note player at the retirement home, Cullen seems to be completely lost, I just cannot see the point of Burns, Bristric looks enthusiastic but needs to deliver more. McCarthy looks OK at shot stopping but is scary with the ball at his feet. The two young wingers time will tell they look lightweight for this division. We have yet to see the rest. After yesterday I expect to see a new Centre back partnership that does not include Souttar or Thomas.

Rubbish as expected. The obsession with "experience" is strange, just like I criticised the Lundstrum signing for similar reasons but people still jump on the "he's got experience" line which has now been failing us for the past 3-4 seasons.

I know you meant experienced players letting us down there but You do need balance.

I said after the Plymouth win that the young lads nearly cost us the victory because they were still making start of the game decisions in that final 20mins that they couldn’t execute because of tiredness, it will be this type of thing that gets the young lads pinged.

In those moments it’s about protecting the lead not trying to rack up a cricket score by forcing the play, you score because in those moments the opposition over commit trying to force play…for all the slating of Burns he was trying to manage that final 20mins, unlike McFarlane, who I didn’t think warranted the praise he was getting, was a bloody hindrance in that period.

 

I don’t understand why we signed Cullen but he wasn’t in the squad thank god, McCarthy wouldn’t have been on the pitch had Jakub not been injured & the time of their 2nd goal there was only Souttar, Thomas and Riis as experienced players on the pitch but Burns, BCDR still getting some.

Even my gran knows after a goal it’s the most dangerous part of a game and they never managed it so the 2nd was quickly followed by a 3rd.

I imagine they are getting pinged because of their inexperience in this management of a game and not trying to personally blame them.

Ideally Lundstram or someone of his experience would have been able to come on but we don’t have a a CM / DCM to come on current so Page and Sammy are going to have to learn quickly.

 

I’m not slating or sticking up for anyone but there is an issue when any team has a lack of experience or leaders on a pitch, Chaplin & Lundstram are key and will make a huge difference.

Ditto Martin also needs to front up and adapt, I would hope we won’t see Thomas at CB again and Souttar’s on thin ice.

 

As an aside, didn’t we have a load of posts stating they would be happy to watch and stay in the lower leagues if they were watching the academy lads & them giving it some regardless of result?
