2010: Portsmouth 6 - 1 Leicester

I think this game has been forgotten a little.

 

I've heard a lot of people sprout yesterday being our worst ever performance and then comparing with Bolton 5-0.

 

I think this Portsmouth one is so similar to the predicament we're in now, albeit played a division above. 

 

Some will remember we had Paulo Sousa trying to play almost identical Brussell Ball with a team that just couldn't hack it. It was awful if not worse than what we're seeing now. 

 

I would like to take note of the players that lined up that day. Yes, a couple in there were not the standard for any system but if you look there's a core there of players that Pearson got a hold of and got playing some exceptional football. 

 

It gives us hope that when Martin and KP go and someone sane gets hold of them there are brighter days ahead for sure.

The fact that yesterday happened in the third tier is precisely why it's our worst ever result. We've been hammered in the second tier on numerous occasions.

As much as the shift in style of play was obviously ill-suited, I remember just how unfit everyone looked under Sousa. Night and day to the two previous seasons under Pearson, Lloyd Dyer was about the only player who didn't look spent at half time.

Remember that one, Sousa caught on camera laughing and joking. Yesterday trumps that in terms of the division we’re in for me.

It’s the Swansea connection. We’ve always assumed Southampton were the architects of all our pain but it’s Swansea.

For some reason Top or Rudkin saw Swansea’s possession based, zero achievement football and thought that was the enlightened path forward.

Keeper and backline was horrific, and that was before Morrison was sent off. And that Portsmouth team was strong at the time, Nugent and Kitson up top for them both pretty lethal at the time.

 

All added up to an unenjoyable evening stood on the front row of the away end with @steveherbe

I am glad that this thread has been created, as I mentioned this to my 7yo son to help give context that from bad results… that positive action can soon come of it.

 

I don’t think Russell will be our manager by the time this season closes. I hope(d) it would work out, but I cannot see it clicking for some of these players with more time at it. I hope to be proven wrong.

 

I do also believe that this squad is stronger than the one we finished the Championship season with (minus Jordan James of course). So, I would like to think if a manager were to come in, sure up the defence… adapt the style a little, mixing up playing tiki-taka with direct football, that we will add consistency to our play and get results.

 

Let’s see what happens over the coming weeks.

I'd argue it's beyond the manager now though because look at the pattern since Enzo, I'm telling my son KP have to go for this to turn around.

There is that side of it too. The culture behind the scenes that we don’t see but get whiffs of.
 

Hopefully a buyer will come in, and with it the change at board level, to decimate down to the player group.

Aren't things bad enough without threads like this? Might as well whip up all the losses to Cov and Forest while we are at it. 

 

Yesterday was the worst. Even when we went up under Micky Adams we had that strange 6-1 loss to Ipswich. 

 

There isn't a club in the world so capable of going from one extreme to the other. I'm sure of it. 

 

I'm not of the "i'd have taken this in exchange for all we've won" camp either. It's getting to the point where it's that bad I'd rather they never ****ing came.

I remember that evening very well.

 

I took a few non LCFC mates with me and the whole journey home was about how unfit we looked.

 

I remember staying until the end just to loudly boo, which felt cathartic at the time.

 

Yesterday was still a much poorer result/performance though, league one and against a side that has a transfer embargo.

Really good comparison - although I think we probably had a better opinion of Sousa at the time than we do of Martin now.

 

But it was just a style of football we couldn’t play at all, and a coach who wouldn’t compromise or adapt.

 

the biggest frustration for me is that we seem to think “attacking football” = 70% possession. The squad we currently have is so much better suited to a more vertical attacking style of play - ironically similar to how Oxford played yesterday.

 

ps. I will still die on the hill that Yuke Abe was majorly underrated and could play the modern 6 role incredibly well, just arrived into the English game around 5 years too early for that role to be understood.

Was this the game on the Friday night after we beat them in the league cup on the Tuesday?

Despite some similarities, that Portsmouth result doesn't come close to how bad yesterday was. At that time Portsmouth had just come down from the premier league and still had the residue left of a premier league squad (despite them ?being in administration at the time).

 

It was also before all the success we had and Portsmouth probably had a greater standing in the game than us back then. Oxford are absolute nobodies.

 

Deep down I think most of us knew we'd be okay enough to stay in the championship that season as we had enough characters and quality and there were already rumours of Sousa being under pressure. I think we know Martin is here for a while yet for a few different reasons.
