davieG Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 Merc Richie Wellens would be happy sign a new contract and commit his future to Leicester City. Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said last week he had been so impressed with the 30-year-old midfielder's performances a new contract was "a formality." Wellens had been linked with a move to Birmingham City, but feels he can fulfil his Premier League ambitions with City. "I am not looking to move and of the clubs I have been linked to, Leicester are a bigger club than any of them," he said. "Knowing my luck I would go there, they would go down and Leicester would go up. "I look at Leicester and think if we can get into the Premier League there will be 32,000 in the Walkers Stadium every week. It would be a fantastic club to play for them in the Premier League. "The manager has not spoken to me about a new contract but Gally (Paul Gallagher) was in for treatment on Tuesday and he heard about it, so he told me. "I am happy here so I will be happy to speak to him about it. "I think I have played quite well for him and he gives me a lot of confidence. "I look at him, he is very calm and is a top manager. He has given me a freedom to play, get on the ball and enjoy my football. "I think he has given that to everyone and we are playing some good stuff at the moment." City's assistant manager Derek Fazackerley said: "It's a terrific sentiment from Richie. He has had an excellent spell since Sven and me came to the club and, as he says, why would you want to leave a club that appears to be on the up? "We are pleased to have Richie here, although you can't stop speculation regarding other clubs' players or for that matter your own. "We are mature about it, and get on with what we've got on a day-to-day basis hoping we are heading in the right direction." Wellens believes City are in great shape to mount a promotion challenge and, while he admits confidence is good, he has warned against over confidence. "If we keep playing like this for the next 18 games we have a good chance of going up this season," he said. "It is so tight. We need 12 or 13 more wins to get into the play-offs, and if we can sneak 15 who knows? We might get second. "We need to keep focused and try not to get ahead of ourselves. We have to be professional."
Fox 4 Life Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 Legend! Fair play to him he has been awesome this season
Christoph Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 Legend for what he's said. Now for his own leicester song/chant?? haha
MrSpaM Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 Glad he wants to stay, and that he see's were on the up Good on ya Richie
cc_star Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 Wellens told Radio Leics: "I honestly see Leicester being as big if not bigger than the clubs I've been linked with. I don't want to leave" http://twitter.com/#!/IanStringerBBC/status/30568220423360512 Awesome news, but it's great to see that someone at the top of his game can see the bigger picture with us as well
Nick Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 15 out of 18 wins and we might get second - too right. Though I've not seen the form quite yet to go practically not just unbeaten but win just about everything in sight. We are however buying/getting on loan the right players though. Our problem will be depth in squad - especially in the goalkeeping stakes, midfield and at right back the people we have to fill those holes do not come close to replacing what we already have.... Logan, Neilson and Oakley..... would be League 1 players for me these days, sorry. I'd love to see some magic before the deadline - A really big tall midfielder to interchange with Abe or play a 442 with to give us depth in playing style. That'd be nice.
Fox92 Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 Ever since I was manager of Bristol Rovers on football manager 2005 and I had Richie Wellens, I loved him as a player. I was on holiday when we were linked with him in the summer of 2009, and I just wished we signed him -- and we did! His passing, vision, first touch, skill and agression makes his a totally fantastic footballer, and the best midfielder since Muzzy Izzet. Playing for Manchester United in the past, his footballing brain is sensational and that's what makes him always ahead of everyone else in our side (the other player with a brain would probably be Vassell). I cannot believe he hasn't played in the Premiership week in week out for a club though. He needs to fullfil that potential here, at Leicester! I have never slated him, he has always been my favourite player right from day one. All those threads about him not being a good player were ridiculas -- take a look at yourself.
Wymsey Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 Shows that he's committed and wants to stay at the club.
Sylvie85 Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 Bloody hell..... some loyalty in football nowadays....... What's the world coming too? Great to hear, best midfielder outside the premiership IMO.
marbelladave Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 I may not rate Wellens as highly as some on this board but he has been much improved of late, both in his play and his attitude. However I do not think him indispensible, but if the comments in the article are reflected in his performances for the rest of the season then I could be persuaded otherwise. He and Gallagher are much improved this season, making the step up to our new style of play in a way that perhaps some other members of the squad could try and emulate.
surrifox Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 he's burned his boats with birmingham by the look of it- very disparaging remarks
Guest BlueBrett Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 "It is so tight. We need 12 or 13 more wins to get into the play-offs, and if we can sneak 15 who knows? We might get second. Bloody hell Richie, tall order that! Nice to see he doesn't have such a shortsighted view of football like most players (despite his age). Just because a team happens to be in the Prem at this moment in time it does not make them a big club. To be a big club you need to be built to last at the top level with the stadium, fanbase and ambition to do so. Glad Wellens has the brains to recognise that and even more glad that he believe we fulfill those criteria!
ScouseFox Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 Glad to see him saying the right things, hope he stays true to his word.

StanSP Posted 27 January 2011 Posted 27 January 2011 I'm glad he's said that. Shows that he is willing to stay on with us and continue the job of getting us to the Premier League. But I won't be 100% happy until the transfer window shuts and he's still with us
