Trav Le Bleu Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 Iv started watching 10 o'clock live on channel 4 and i find Charlie Brooker, Jimmy Carr and David Mitchell all rather funny but Lauren Laverne just isn't... is it just me or are women comedians just not as good? In fairness, Lauren Leverne isn't a comedian, she's an ex-singer and TV presenter who is quite humourous. I've still voted no, though there are exceptions. Can't think of a good female stand-up, but in sit-coms there are many good female performers. Sara Cox and Claudia Winkleman can make me chuckle as presenters though.

Asha Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 There are some good women comedians, Sarah Millican's a good example, I saw a woman at the Highlight a couple of years ago who was hilarious. There are just less of them. Sally-Anne Haywood? I saw her at highlight, was fvcking class.
Webbo Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 Sally-Anne Haywood? I saw her at highlight, was fvcking class. I think , after searching the web, that it was Karen Bailey.
Stadt Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 Shappi Karsandi has her moments but like most female comedians isn't consistently funny. Although there are some completely gash male comedians. * Ed Byrne cough cough*
Yojoe36 Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 No, they're not at all as funny. Apart from Jo Brand, but she's like a bloke so..... yeah
DB11 Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 Not stand up, no. Catherine Tate is a good actor / comedian in her own right.
MPH Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 Used to like Victoria Woods back in the day when she did her stand up stuff.... her Piano songs were often very funny.

Zingari Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 Cheri Blair was quite funny in her day if you like that sort of gurning funny face pulling humour. She was better than her dad anyway
One Arm Babba Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 That Geordie one is rubbish. That Iranian bird is rubbish. Victoria wood is rubbish. That big bird who looks like David Williams in a wig is rubbish!
Daggers Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 Is this thread part of a wonderful series which will also include 'Chicks, can they park or what?' and 'Do men make better hunters or gatherers?'
Salieri Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 First 'Kermo was decent' and now this : Jo Brand is pretty good.
Raw Dykes Posted 17 February 2012 Posted 17 February 2012 That Geordie one is rubbish. That Iranian bird is rubbish. Victoria wood is rubbish. That big bird who looks like David Williams in a wig is rubbish! There was a trailer for a stand up show with her saying she drank wine, but it was ok because it was halal wine and the grapes were killed humanely. Does anyone actually think there's anything humane about halal meat? I'd much rather be executed instantly than be held upside down and have my throat cut so my still beating heart can pump all the blood out my body while I'm all the while still fully conscious. To be honest, it doesn't really bother me that some animals are executed this way, but don't try and tell me it's humane, because it really is far from it. At least be honest about it. Stealthy lies, and a great, light subject matter for comedy, all in one rubbish joke by a rubbish comedienne.
Rincewind Posted 17 February 2012 Posted 17 February 2012 There are good and bad female comedians same as men. It's just for years they were not accepted for mainstream comedy. They were used for the men to bounce their gas off with the male always having the punch line. Victoria Wood is good I think and also writes good stuff. Very talented Saw a program on her a few weeks ago about her career.
I am Rod Hull Posted 17 February 2012 Posted 17 February 2012 Catherine Tate's sketch show was decent.
Captain... Posted 17 February 2012 Posted 17 February 2012 Someone who hasn't been mentioned is Caroline Aherne, not so much a stand-up comedienne, but a comedy writer and performer, a female Steve Coogan if you will. The Mrs Merton show had some great moments in it and the Royale Family was class when it started but now I find the christmas specials to be a bit tedious, but the first couple of serious were brilliant. I think the problem is there isn't much room for safe family orientated comedy any more, people want Gervais or Boyle slagging off famous people and calling people ******, or more intelligent comedy like Mitchell, Brooker or Stewart Lee. There aren't any good female comediennes that are doing that at the moment in England. There have always been more decent US female comics, but in the UK I really struggle to think of any, and appearing on MOck the Week and programs like that where they try and compete with Boyle and Howard just exposes them as not being as funny at that type of comedy.
RonnieTodger Posted 17 February 2012 Posted 17 February 2012 Very few women are funny...Joan Rivers is not.
Corky Posted 18 February 2012 Posted 18 February 2012 Catherine Tate's sketch show was good. Arr yae serias?

Bit of a tangent here, but, my understanding of halal is that it's supposedly respectful to Allah, not respectful to the animal.
