Guest shearfox Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 Thoughts, achieved what no one else managed, brought the FA Cup and Champions League to Chelsea...
Mark_w Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 I think they probably thought of him as a legend before he started managing them.
Mack Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 He had a huge advantage in that he didn't have to worry about refreshing the squad for the future as he is just a fill in appointment. That said he has taken what was at his disposal and got them playing well. How much of that is him and how much of it is Terry / Drogba / Lampard is another matter. As Manager if he identified letting them run the show was the best option then he can also be credited for that.
Fox92 Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 The word 'Legend' is used far too often in life. I think Di Matteo has done very well, but I wouldn't say he is a (managerial) legend yet.
Captain... Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 I would say he is a Chelsea Legend, he was very close to being one from his playing days, but to come in and do this, especially after the season they had, I would say puts him above Vialli, Ghullit, even Zola. His goal in the '97 FA cup final, in his first season, helped them secure their first trophy since 1970, and he was a major part in Chelsea becoming the club they are now. Remember this was before Abramovich's millions. A Chelsea Legend? Yes, A Premier League Legend? I would say so. A global football legend? No
ithuriel Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 For that club he currently is a god, good player who returns has a temp mananager and wins the FA cup and Champions league from a failing season.
foxfanazer Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 Absolutely superb performance and deserves the job without question
BlueSi13 Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 Certainly a hero for his club and it would be staggering if Chelsea doesn't give him the job full-time. However, was it me or did anybody else notice that whenever he tried to speak to his players last night they didn't seem to pay any attention whatsoever?

Certainly a hero for his club and it would be staggering if Chelsea doesn't give him the job full-time. However, was it me or did anybody else notice that whenever he tried to speak to his players last night they didn't seem to pay any attention whatsoever? They were all listening to John Terry instead!
Corky Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 He's scored in two cup finals as a player and won two trophies as a caretaker. Definitely a club legend. Will he be as good if appointed permanently? Not so sure.
ithuriel Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 Might suit him better to just move on now and forever be a legend there rather than get the inevitable sack.
Fox in the North Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 As a chelsea legend definitely. Considering the season they've had and still managing to win the FA cup and the European cup with those players it's remarkable. Also considering his playing career at Chelsea, he'd be mightily popular before this anyway.
LCFC_FAN_1995 Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 Love it how the amount of money Roman has spent; bringing in managers, getting rid of managers, the high amount of players brought. Then Matteo becomes the interim manager, doesn't get any new players and probably not being paid as much as previous managers and wins the FA Cup and Champions League He should get the job, not a high profile manager but he has won a double and the players like him
Jordan Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 Di Matteo may have "inherited" the squad, but he also inherited a 3-1 first leg loss to Napoli. He did a hell of a job preparing and inspiring his team to mount a great comeback, and without that, there is no first CL title in club history. When Villas-Boas was sacked, plenty of pundits and fans (including myself) blamed that decision and recent inconsistent Chelsea performances on "player power" and the like. The manager merry-go-round at Stamford Bridge and the reputations of a few veteran players certainly made it seem like Villas-Boas was partly undone by manager-killing dressing room cancers. But what do I know? Not a whole lot, I guess. For all that's said about Di Matteo accommodating Terry, Lampard and Drogba, that's worked out pretty well. Those three are not the same players as they were six years ago, but they were still the best Chelsea had at their respective positions. As for Di Matteo's "legend" status, if I were a Chelsea fan, I'd consider naming my first-born son Roberto.
RonnieTodger Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 Certainly, as are Drogba, Cech, Lampard, Cole and Terry in my opinion. It seems strange but this modern team is more "legendary" than any other Chelsea team. They've done what they never have so the likes of Peter Osgood and Ron Harris are inferior in terms of results, as sad as it sounds.
Tielemans63 Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 He has delivered the club's first ever Europesn Cup and as such he will always be revered therefore he is absolutely a club legend.
carlhltid Posted 20 May 2012 Posted 20 May 2012 chelsea are such a good team they dont need a manager. bet he didnt do much just pick the team and the players done the rest
Raj Posted 21 May 2012 Posted 21 May 2012 AVB was told to restructure the team, get rid of some of the oldies and bring in new blood. This would have been too much for Fergie and The Special One jointly never mind AVB. Then he was sacked... RDM was told just do your best.....Hence resorted to the old guard and they came up trumps...EASY!!!
vandamman Posted 21 May 2012 Posted 21 May 2012 Di Matteo is not a legend and he wouldn't want to be called one anyway I reckon, yet. In the same respect Rafa Benitez won the champs league but he's certainly no Pool legend.

MC Prussian Posted 21 May 2012 Posted 21 May 2012 What if... Di Matteo ended up as the new Gayern coach?
ScouseFox Posted 21 May 2012 Posted 21 May 2012 Rafa Benitez is definitely a legend to Liverpool fans, young and old. They've done nothing but want him back since Kenny left and loads didn't want him to go in the first place a few years back. Look what's happened to them since he left, too...
