ScouseFox Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 Arsenal behind too. Not a great week for English clubs! Dortmund leading Madrid and top of the "Group of Death".
VinceNoir Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 City have been awful tonight! I reckon we could have beaten them
BlueSi13 Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 Arsenal behind too. Not a great week for English clubs! Dortmund leading Madrid and top of the "Group of Death". Just a continuation from last year where the decline of English clubs in Europe was truly remarkable. I think a dam good bet right now would be that no English club makes it to the knockout rounds or quarter finals.
Guest MattP Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 Good job Arse and Man U are in pub groups, either in Group D I think they go.
Finnegan Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 I'm not sure how yet but I'm pretty sure this makes the point that Marco Reus is better than Ronaldo.

Danizen Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 What is Mancini playing at with the tactics. He should have stopped playing around with the defence weeks ago. He's playing three or five at the back to solve a problem that didn't exist. They've been dire in Europe. They have one point (which they fluked) so they're basically out. Dortmund will hand their arse to them at home.
BlueSi13 Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 Chelsea won it With the most remarkable run of luck i think we'll ever see. 99 times out of hundred, Napoli, Barcelona or Bayern Munich would have dumped them out comfortably.

Except all those teams (except Bayern) had two legs to comfortably beat Chelsea and they didn't.... that's some luck.

But they didn't. Think it's a bit silly to say English clubs in Europe have declined dramatically when the most recent winner of the biggest competition in Europe was, er, English. As for this season, United are through (basically), Arsenal should still breeze through, Chelsea will have a tough task but have good enough players to get through and City are all but out. 3/4 isn't bad, and is better than most (if not all) other countries do every year. We've been lucky, well, if you want our teams to do well, with our teams performances in Europe over the past 7/8 years.

It was as well, still can't believe it when I look back. I think Barca hit the woodwork 9 times. Napoli didn't defend and Bayern will never lose a final playing like that again. Problem they have this year is they are trying to play football rather than stopping others.

That's not really luck on Chelsea's part, it's tactical ineptitude on Napoli's.
purpleronnie Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 Theres no question in my mind the quality of the premiership isnt as high as a few years ago, teams that have gone up from the championship in recent years I dont think would have survived a decade ago. And as for the CL there is some tangable evidence for a decline 2007,2008,2009 had a total of 9 premiership teams in the semi finals (3 in each year). 2010,2011,2012 only had a total of 2.

Agree completely with your views regarding the drop in standards of the Premiership, I said the same thing a while back on another thread but not many agreed with me, it is still very exciting but that does not always mean the quality of play/players is still there.
Finnegan Posted 25 October 2012 Posted 25 October 2012 Are standards falling or are other leagues just getting stronger? The Bundesliga is a league that's going from strength to strength, teams like Dortmund and Schalke shouldn't be considered a surprise when they pull in wins against English clubs. Braga have been improving in Europe for a few years now, Ajax have a strong European pedigree, Shaktar is one of the toughest places to go in Europe with even Barca having a wobble in the east of the continent on occasion.
marko Posted 6 November 2012 Posted 6 November 2012 lol 2-0 Ajax after 15 mins. City really are a shambles in Europe.
Jimothy Posted 6 November 2012 Posted 6 November 2012 Shocking marking for both the Ajax goals. Nice finish from Toure there though. 2-1 Arsenal 1-0 in Schalke, nice finish from Walcott.
