You can't beat Devon & Cornwall

Gods country. Lynton & Lynmouth - We used to stay here when I was a kid

No arcades, just long walks, mushrooming for breakfast, drives out to the coast and evenings spent playing footie on the front lawn.

Bliss  :)

EDIT: Loved the old cliff railway

Usual numptys posting on the thread

Why are you getting so defensive about Skegness? It's horrendous.

There's very little there except arcades and chip shops, it attracts chavs from all over the midlands, it's facing on the coast makes it exceptionally windy, it is rather dirty, there's no interesting harbours or marinas, it's literally just a beach and a shit front.

You can go round the bay to Hunstanton and it's much nicer. Have you been to any of the places listed elsewhere in this thread? There's some really nice seaside towns. I admit most of them are much quieter than Skeg but who the **** goes to the seaside for a night out when you've got much better cities for that in land? Really? I've never understood people from Leicester who go to Skeg for a pissup. What's the point? There's a couple of awful bars and that's about it.

For the time it takes to drive there you could have gotten on a train to Sheffield or London and had a much better night out. Albeit without chicken teddies.

I live just outside of Blackpool and there's always something to do or watch, a lot are free events too.

Just off out in a minute down to the prom to watch the world firework championships, it's China's turn this week.

Blackpool gets my vote as the best.

I can hear them going off and I'm a fair way out of the centre!

Bournemouth was my childhood destination (it's only a half hour drive from here) and was also pretty good having the beach close-by when I went to uni there.

I can vaguely remember visiting relatives and going to Whitby Bay a few times as a child and I get a good feeling from that memory so I assume it was nice.

Skeggy aint Norfolk.

Grew up in Lynn, always went on a Sunday to Hunstanton, Holkham or Cromer. Much of North Norfolk is so wankified now, like Chelsea on Sea. I've been back for two weeks now indulging my inner Mallick. It's such a beautiful area. Those big skies....

, I love North Norfolk ,but I know what you mean. my parents were lucky enough to own a 2 nd home in Burnham Market( humblebrag) and then the crowds arrived,I know you might say pot kettle but they liked the laid back weekends with the locals. They got rid albeit for a nice sum,but its overrated and now just so busy full of pretentious twvts.

For me, it's all about South Devon. I also like the Jurassic coast in Dorset.

There's also a lot to be said for the Sussex coast, though the beaches are shingle. I spent of couple of summers in Bexhill, which is full of old people. As a Midlander, I never got tired of walking down to the sea front for a bit of fresh air. The rolling Sussex Downs are pretty stunning. Eastbourne is pretty but full of pensioners, Hastings is one of the scattiest places I've ever been to, Rye is a bit weird.

I rather liked Dartmouth, not been to Skeggy thought the family went to Butlins and quite enjoyed it. North coast of Scotland is beautiful but not many towns, avoid Wick.

Weather is usually awful but love Staithes, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay area.........but not Scarborough!!

St. Ives, Falmouth & Penzance.  Always enjoyed Tenby as a kid.

I went with a Bulgarian and a Greek friend to the British coast and they couldn't believe how beautiful it is, the huge sandy beaches, the big skies, the little fishing villages and pubs. If the water was warm and it was slightly cheaper it would be unbeatable!

You can't beat big skies  , the bigger the better .
I like skies that completely cover the land beneath. There's nothing worse than being out for a walk along a foreign  coast with  a sky that keeps falling short.
Britain may not still rule the waves , but when it comes to big skies we're still the masters. :D

Torquay, Paignton, Clovelly in North Devon was nice too. Tenby and a small place called Penbryn in Wales are nice.

My friends parents lived in Clovelly, when they went on holiday we all went and stayed in their house a couple times, it really was nice, especially when all the tourists had gone home and you had the chance to walk the lanes or just sit out on a bench somewhere overlooking the harbour or take a quiet drink in one of the pubs.

It's been summer which was only 1 day of rain in 2 months this year, and with not working I've been travelling and relaxing and reading and generally giving this place a break from me so that you can all put up with me for the next 9 months. I checked in a few times to see if you'd left me a message with regards to being over here - maybe next time. Glad you enjoyed the cote sauvage - next time take a boat trip out from Royan to the Corduan lighthouse - it's a beauty and not expensive - you could even go and have a meal cooked on the sandbank at low tide during your visit.

The cycle tracks and golden beach are even better on my side of the estuary, perhaps I can give you some tips for over this side next time your over. Anyway glad you enjoyed it.

Anywhere on the Isle of Wight.

I loved it so much I moved here.

There's a different type of beach to suit your mood.

All over Alum Bay, love an ornament full of coloured sand.

Falmouth. Well fistral beach and the marina part. Most parts of cornwall are nice.

Cromer although full of blue rinse is good for a break.

Surprised how many people have mentioned torquay. Yes it's lively but it's full of some right to$$ers. I've been going every year for the last 26 years due to having relatives that live down there it gets worse year on year.

Sure some of you only rate it cuz you had a good time for the cup game.

Robin hood bay is the best place i've been up north. Although i rarely venture north for holidays.

Agree with this - Lynton and Lynmouth are my favourite holiday location. First went in the 70s with my parents when we lived in Leicester. My parents liked it so much they retired to the area - so now my family gets cheap holidays down there at the Hotel of Mum & Dad !

It really is an unspoilt destination and my son now loves it as much as I do. Unfortunately the cat is out the bag on England's Switzerland as there was a big feature on L & L on Countryfile the other week.

The other place I would recommend that is unspoilt - is Southwold in Suffolk. Had a cracking family holiday there this August - superb place.

Anyone been to Folkestone and got any opinions (negative probably)? It's where I grew up to age 18.

I was really amused a couple of years back when my sisters-in-law from Hinckley went on some cheap package break in Folkestone and came back horrified, saying how rough it was!

Went to Folkestone while on holiday in Kent this year. My god what a dive. It seemed full of Eatern European immigrant families and was plainly run-down, almost as if it had given up trying.

Also the same can be said of Dover and Ramsgate.

Deal was disappointing. Sandwich was quaint. Margate is another dump.

Did you go in Doggets Coat and Badge pub ( if it's still there) ,

I used to love that place in the 80's , it reminded me of the old "fun pubs" that you must remember :D .
