Babylon Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 lol lol You just have to laugh at the sheer ignorance. We started without Drinkwater, Morgan, Nugent and Moore. It was a weaker side than the side that started against Millwall, and a lot of us felt that was too experimental. Our first XI would have shown them 'the best the Championship has to offer,' make no mistake about it. You left Dyer out of the list also. Basically 5 of our best players.
Webbo Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 There weren't many replies in that thread. It's probably Stokes answer to Bentleys.
Guest Bilo Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Pains me to say it but Stoke played good possession and passing football. We looked horrible today so can't really begrudge them slagging us for it. They should be for how long they've been in the division and how much the team cost to assemble.

Yes but you are forgetting we played an experimental formation, they held the ball well yes but to be honest they didn't really create much more than what we did. When we got Dyer on and went 442 we looked better

I wouldn't mind if they said something like "wow they were poor today, I'm surprised that they are top of the championship even if I have never seen them play this season and have no idea about anything'. But they didn't, and that's the real shame.
Buzzell Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Potter in peace here... As ever don't judge all (most) Stoke fans by what you read by a tiny minority on the forum ;-) Thought your support was class today. Disappointed by poor turn out from us. Wish you well in rest of your Championship campaign + hope to meet you 'full strength' all round. Cheers Good luck for the rest of the season and cup. Cheers.
BrummieFOX Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Poor first half. Second was a lot better. Would have liked to see us give it more of a go as we showed in the last 20 that we could have got a result had we have done earlier. Fans were pretty underwhelming for 4,200. Couple of great new chants though.
Guest Bilo Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 You left Dyer out of the list also. Basically 5 of our best players. Schoolboy error! It was the absolute embodiment of a second string side based on who we've been fielding this season. The side we took to Loftus Road would have made them sweat far more, it seems very presumptuous of them to start thinking they're a great footballing side after playing rugby for five years.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Oh well, is very much the reaction to today. First half we were fairly poor with Knockaert our only player being positive and creative in possession. Too many times today did we fail to exploit the opportunity to move the ball forward or to run with it when the spaces opened up. Our best chances fell to Schlupp who wasn't awful but is certainly a million miles away from making it as a striker at any level higher than The Championship. Stoke are just a horrible team. I've read/heard about the evolution of Stoke but saw no evidence of it today. The pattern of play very much consisted of get it wide and lump it in to Jones. To be fair it worked and he absolutely dominated Miquel for the first 45 minutes. For someone that isn't exaclty small I think Miquel can be quite suspect in the air and Wasilewski dealt with Jones much better by getting up early and showing him a bit of muscle/elbow. The same happened at the back for Stoke, Shawcross and the other centre half weren't really troubled in the air until Nugnet came on. Vardy worked extremely hard and hurried with real intensity and intent as ever but wasn't really helped by having an ineffective Schlupp alongside him. Second half what changed was out intent to keep the ball on the floor, move it around and work the spaces. When we did that we cut Stoke open and they struggled when the game was taken away from being a physical battle in each final third. That for me was promising as, for that 45 minutes we showed that, even without some of our best players, when a football match broke out we could handle ourselves against higher level opposition. Thought our support was ok but nothing more. Good numbers, loud after Stoke's second and until the end, but a drab game for the first 45 minutes didn't really help. Where the famous Stoke atmosphere has gone I don't know. No, actually, I do... it never even existed. The most apt chant of today was "just like it used to be" in reference to the empty seats and lack of noise. I looked at their style today and did wonder how, after years of being in The Premiership and having spent so much, they haven't moved away from such a basic way of playing. Maybe that explains the seats though.
Langston Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 I wish all these sensible Stoke fans coming on here would stop making me not hate Stoke so much.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 To be fair, we did play awful football today. They gave us a lesson in how to keep hold of the ball. They're nothing like Pulis' Stoke anymore. Pains me to say it but Stoke played good possession and passing football. We looked horrible today so can't really begrudge them slagging us for it. What?! When your style of play is to get it out wide and chip crosses in/stand crosses up to the back post for Kenwyne Jones to head in that does not consist of good football. He nearly scored the same goal twice that's how many times they did it! Add in the amount of times Shawcross and others in the back four just put their foot through it and you certainly don't have a team free from the influence of Pulis. They had a couple of neat players in N'Zonzi, Adam and Arnautovic but they are all big lads who still put themself about and can mix it. When Knockaert lined up that free kick towards the end I looked at the wall he had to get it past and all five were 6 foot plus. When we made it a football match and started to pass the ball and try and be a bit wiser in possession that's when Stoke looked at their most vulnerable. Hardly the sign of a good style or passing football.
Tom17LCFC Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 haha very delusional set of fans. Being in the prem really has gone to their heads. Can't blame them to be fair, punching well above their weight. To say we're an awful footballing side and saying 'if that's the best the championship has to offer' though? ridiculous

Hardly the sign of a good style or passing football. You have got to be kidding me? In the first half Stoke kept the ball for well over 7 minutes at one point without us touching the ball and we were chasing shadows. It started with Butland playing it short from a goal kick and ended up with Jones heading wide for a goal kick. In the time between that I think every single player on their side touched the ball once. At times every team is going to have to put their foot through it and play it long but they absolutely dominated possession in the first half and it looked like a training session attack vs defence for large parts of that first 45 minutes. The days of Stoke being a rugby team like under Pulis are long gone. How you can state they didn't look to play passing football is ridiculous. Yeah they used Jones as a focal point at times but so do Man City with Dzeko/Negredo.
Happy Fox Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Disappointing we could of beaten them, had we played our full strength team but priority is winning the league and no excuses now we can do it come on City!
VLC86 Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Hammond struggled massively. You could tell our lads were used to having no time on the ball. Stoke didn't press us much and just allowed us to make mistakes. Very sloppy in possession overall not a bad run out but some of our play was woeful. Got to agree, Hammond was like last seasons Drinkwater in the first half, sideways and predictable. When his confidence grew he had a better 2nd half but MOTM? I would go with De Laet

Craig Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 I thought our end was brilliant where I was. Decent away day despite the result.

The days of Stoke being a rugby team like under Pulis are long gone. How you can state they didn't look to play passing football is ridiculous. Yeah they used Jones as a focal point at times but so do Man City with Dzeko/Negredo. Not at all. They kept the ball in the first half but so often it was along their own backline and we weren't helping ourselves whatsoever with our shape and our closing down. Countless times it was hoisted forward to Jones though, not just as a focal point but as a centre piece of their play. Miquel was tussling away with him and Wasilewski contended in the air with him several times. There were numerous times in the first half I heard people in our end shouting 'hoof' and one guy even singing 'Swing Low'. As soon as a football match broke out in the second half we got a true indication of what they're like and again it was so often a foot through it job by Shawcross in particular. One of the main things I took away from today is that Ryan Shawcross is not good enough to play for England, I didn't realise quite how poor he was on the ball. It wasn't always last-ditch, clear the lines stuff either. They have a coupe of decent ball players in N'Zonzi, Assaidi and Arnautovic but let's look at the rest... Shawcross, Cameron, Wilson, Pieters?! We're not looking at player with the ability to play in a Swansea or Arsenal style here are we?! P.s. possession stats of 56/44 in their favour hardly indicates we were out-passed today, and that's with 45 minutes where we struggled to keep the ball.
Happy Fox Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 What was this Jamie Vardy chant? Jamie Vardy is having a party, bring your vodka and your charlie Repeat
Bert Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 That Jamie Vardy song had the wrong tuneYup, sang way too fast as well. Pretty sure it should be sang to the "when I was young I had no sense" chant.
Dan Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Our end today was quality. Not for the entire 90, but in general I was very impressed by our lot today and it's a shame we're only like that occasionally rather than regularly. We were completely outplayed today and anyone who really thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.
