Will Pearson be retained if we get promoted

Recommended Posts

Hand on heart (cos its what I think)... Yes I think Pearson would be kept. It would seem bizarre to instantly part with the man who has just got you promoted. Then... I think Pearson may struggle. I think he's possibly too rigid, doesnt embrace conflict and 'big personalities' and tactically may be a little outdated to bring success at the higher level.

I could be miles off, but I get this feeling.

Cue hostility... lol

Yet the positive of this is that he is clearly very good at building a team void of those 'big personalities'. He wouldn't sign big name players that would disrupt the squad. You'd hope he'd carry on his form of identifying hard-working hungry players.

I do agree with this. If Pearson can find quality players with a good attitude to play for us - and yes they do exist - then that's what he should do. His methods have worked so far so let him continue in the manner he wants to.

NP has a whole team ethic, this goes for all of the clubs management team from the Interns to himself and  the 1st team  squad. If he stays those that are good enough in his opinion will get retained which ever division.

If the board decide to let him go which ever division the club is in the danger of the whole back room following him is almost a racing cert. During his career NP has been amazed by some of the decisions various boards have made regarding his abilities both as a player and as a manager.

What ever happens his next employer will get a committed football professional who has a network in English football that spans over 30 years and IMO it is only a matter of time to which club he manages in the Premiership.  He would like that to be this club his main reason for coming back.

I think maybe a better question would be that if we allow his contract to be run down, whats stopping him from being poached by an established prem team?

Other than the fact I would highly doubt an established prem team would want him but that's not the point!

But lets face it, if he wanted to take a step up the ladder he'd have the perfect excuse...

Meaningless. If a manager wants to go, they go, regardless of their contract situation. Witness Martin "I'll never walk out on a contract" O'Neil walking out on a contract because "oh I meant to say unless it's Celtic lool soz".

Pearson does have form for walking unless pleaded with to stay though. So if the owners want to keep him then they better be on their toes come the end of the season otherwise we might have another case of "i was waiting for someone to stop me, but they didn't, so I just kind of kept going and now I'm at shit hull ffs wtf am I doing here"

Twat.

Why? He doesn't think he'll be retained, What's wrong with that?

I am not certain he would be. The owners may want someone with Premiership experience. Who knows?

Fifty fifty, in my view.

as a fan , i want him to stay . but if this was my business,  and i wanted to be a force in the prem , i just don't know to be honest, what i'd do ? the thais are really saying something in not giving him a contract now ,and waiting , surely ?

You have to remember that the Premiership is a vastly different proposition to the Championship It may be deemed to the club's advantage to bring in someone who has first hand knowledge of it's workings. A manager of course does have a massive influence in the world of big business, in which there is no room for sentimentality.

Football is an extremely big business at any level but the Premiership is massive, and a new manager, regardless of what Pearson has achieved, is a distinct possibility.

I am not saying this will happen, but it could.

I would be totally surprised and gobsmacked if he wern't. You don't fire the man who got you there, especially given his own growth in stature and confidence this season. The owners do seem to think long term and not panic...if they were going to get rid of Pearson they would have done so in Feb/Mar last year.

(need to get these contracts sorted out though....)

We don't know what our owners thoughts are if we go up.

We know they got Sven in to get us up plus get in big name players.(Beckham)

If we go up are they going to be looking for that type of player could NP get players in like that?

Are the 11 contracts being let run down to clear the wage bill for a big splash in the summer if we make it.

They could offer contracts now if they really wanted too.

Not to hard champs you get x prem you get y.

Most long term contracts in the champs will have a wage in if you go up or a minimum.

They don't need to wait just word it correctly.

Thats why I think there is a little more to it and why players are getting a little twitchy.

If we go up he has to be given a chance to manage us in the prem. We'd be a laughing stock if we didn't.

As to they guy that brought up the supermarket scenario (sorry I forgot to quote and couldn't remember your name) you make a very good point. However the guy that's got you to where you are now should be given a chance to prove himself in this new environment. If it turns out that it's a step to far, then maybe you can look at that other impressive CV.

Another question I have is. IF we don't get promoted, and with his contract out. Would you offer Pearson another contract? In the hope that he wasn't far off from getting it right. Or, simply get rid and bring someone else in? Bearing in the mind that we'd more than likely be several players light due to contracts running out and so the squad would have to be re-built again.

You would have thought the Thais have learned there lesson that a top name does not allways work, but then again if promoted i can see them going down this route again as they want to increase our popularity in Thailand.

Southampton's 'success' is a myth. They've dropped into midtable and is that such a great achievement given what they've spent this year?

Spot on.

They are dropping like a stone now, Pochettinos honeymoon is over now and we'll find out how good he is over the next few months.

They haven't done badly by any means but for what they've spent, you'd be pissed off with anything less than midtable.

If we let him go in favour of a big name then I'll seriously have to re-consider my renewal.

They have had a very tough run of games, Arsenal away, Chelsea twice, Man City, Everton away, Newcastle away. Poor result against Villa however.

Next couple of games are against WBA and Sunderland so they could be climbing the table.

Table doesn't lie though. It's not like it's only they who've had to play those sides.

They're a good side who I like, with a genuine interest in bringing through players - but I don't buy for one second they've been great this year. I don't like the excuse making nobhead Pardew but he's done far better this year for me given what they've spent.

I agree.

If City do as well as the Saints if we go up I'll be more than happy.

Id be very surprised if they dont finish mid to upper table.

Mmmm... only partly accurate.

MON was interested in the Leeds Job and wanted to talk to them about it and was told no. It was made clear to him in no uncertain terms that his resignation would not be accepted for him to go to a relative rival. No matter how much he wanted to go, he didn't. He then came out and said he was impressed with how much john Elsom wanted to keep him.

As for Pearson and Hull... are you Honestly saying you don't think his position as our manager was undermined by Paulo Sousa being shown round the facilities and being Mandaric's guest at some games?

If he's not, my ST will be going in the bin.

No.

I think he'll be gone regardless in the summer.

Probably along with my season ticket

I'm not getting a season ticket if he isn't retained,  He's evolving as a manager and his signings are original.  This is our chance to become a stable successful club! Which we always seem to throw in the bin and take the same route has every other club.  Its boring

For a long time i was a pearson doubter but in all honesty if we get promoted and we let him go i personally won't set foot in the ground again!

I support the club not the manager.

There have been plenty of decisions in the past that have upset me as a fan but the club comes before players or managers.

My favourite misconception about all this is that there is a box, labelled 'experienced, capable Premiership managers', just waiting for a job at mighty Leicester to come up. Look at the trouble West Brom have had recruiting. Who would you accept if NP did move on? Hughes? I'd rather have Pearson. McCarthy? Pearson please. Jol? NP for me. Yeah, if Hodgson or Wenger suddenly express an interest then we have to look closely, but the vast majority of managers will do the same things as each other, and knowing the players is worth something.

I can't even imagine the owners being daft enough to get rid-it would make no sense. Give me the man who doubled the size of his Co-op over the man who kept his Tesco just about afloat any day....

Nothing would surprise me with our owners.

Buying the club they let NP walk to get big name sousa in.

That failed so they bring in big sven that failed so bring in NP to sort a mess out.

Once up and where they want to be they may feel NP will not attract the sort of players they want.

Exit NP at no cost Bring in big name 11 players most not good enough for the prem on high wages let go to clear the wage bill.

New man has large budget to buy and a large wage budget.

Not something I want but would not be shocked if it happened.

Good post.

This begs the question of what really makes a good Premiership manager? Take Moyes at Man Utd for example. Very very few people suggested that he was going to be the wrong man to take over from Sir Alex. He was seen by most as the natural successor. Now those very same, very fickle 'fans' are bleating that they would have never had Moyes for the job. If he continues like this it is very likely that he will be moved on to be replaced probably by a foreign manager with a decent CV.

The same could well happen with us and Pearson I suspect. If its clear that we are going to be struggling if we get promoted, the Thais will get rid of Nige, I have little doubt of that.

But you are right. Would you prefer a Hughes or an Allardyce or a young, relatively unproven foreign manager to come in and replace Pearson? I dont think I would.

There seems to be an image, if you like, of what a modern day Prem manager should be. Im not sure whether Nigel Pearson would fit that image. What I do think is that we would pretty much have to hit the ground running next season. If not, assuming we go up, Pearson will be gone make no mistake. And to be replaced by whom? God knows.....

Harsh to judge Moyes re Manure or United. They could have any manager come in the world's best but whilst Ferguson is sitting in the directors box at Old Trafford scrutinising every move Moyes makes under a microscope he will do nothing. Impossible job no matter who takes it or gets it. Actually feel sorry for Moyes.

1) I thought he was the wrong choice, the only way he's similar to Fergie is that he's Scottish. He did well at Everton but nothing incredible, didn't win a trophy and got to one cup final. Style of play leaves a lot to be desired, very cautious as shown by Everton failing to win at any of Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in 46 attempts under him. Everton are currently playing with freedom and fluency, Man United aren't.

2) I'd take the Hughes of Blackburn and Fulham, not the one from Man City and QPR. He's doing ok so far at Stoke. Allardyce is hideous, his football is appalling, his transfer policy a joke and his team had no fight or effort in a cup semi-final.

3) Personally, if Pearson gets us promoted, he should be given an opportunity to see how it does in the Premier League. It would be very unfair to see him get promoted then leave straight away. No doubt if we struggle and look out of our depth then he will go but who knows, he might be great and we upset the odds (we'd be favourites for relegation, certainly).
