Babylon Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Kaamark, Elliott, Taggert and Walsh..? Did they ever even play together as a back four?
Woollett's Wellies Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 I beg to disagree on one point particularly....Elliott, Taggart and Walsh were superb at dealing with corners in either box and contributed with a number of goals over the seasons they played. Our current Centre backs could certainly do with contributing a few more.
harpendenfox Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Who knows. These boys haven't played in the Prem. Yet.
Jimmy Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Kaamark, Elliott, Taggert and Walsh..? they never played together as a four, if they all played Kaamark would have been RWB
Woollett's Wellies Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Kaamark was absolute class. 1997 League cup final. I bet he's still got Juninho in his pocket. I found this interview with him from 2008. Love the comment about Robbie Savage. http://talkingballs.co.uk/showthread.php/26209-An-Interview-with-Pontus-KÃ¥mark-Exclusively-in-English-for-TalkingBalls
Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Under MON we rarely played a back 4, even in his later days when Walshy moved on we had Impey/Sinclair and Guppy as wing backs.

_Fatboyslow_ Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Kaamark was absolute class. His stlye was so understated, a joy to watch and so often the forgotten man
Woollett's Wellies Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Agreed but I'd extend it to any set piece in either box, not just corners Oh yes absolutely! The Elliot, Taggart combination in particular were lethal from any set piece in the opposition box.
hackneyfox Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Kaamark, Elliott, Taggert and Walsh..? No, this back 4 isn't that good.
bovril Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 It's the best back four we had in the 02/03 promotion season probably. Taggart and Elliott were by far the best centre half pairing in the league at that time. I think we had Sinclair right back and then one of Rogers, Stewart or Davidson at left back?
Fox92 Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 It's the best back four we had in the 02/03 promotion season probably. Taggart and Elliott were by far the best centre half pairing in the league at that time. I think we had Sinclair right back and then one of Rogers, Stewart or Davidson at left back? I agree... Remember that goal Stewart scored at Wimbledon, that was one of his best (along with the goal at Manchester City the following year)!! In terms of the thread, let's remember that the likes of Elliot were consistent in the Premier League and dominant in Cup finals so it's slightly harsh to compare yet. It's one step at a time for our current back four yet, although I'm pleased we have a somewhat solid defence (I say somewhat because I'm sure Nige would have liked to conceded less, especially as a former solid centre half himself).
LanguedocFox Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Comparisons are almost impossible, given the different conditions/competition. However, I can remember after we beat Villa in the first match of the 1997-98 season emailing my brother and saying "Whatever else happens, we will not go down this season!" We only won 1-0, but the back four of Kaamark, Elliott, Walsh and Prior were awesome. At that time, Villa had what was supposed to be one of the best attacks in the Premiership, with Dwight Yorke, Stan Collymore and Savo Milosevic, but they didn't get a look-in. The one thing we seem to have at the moment is reasonably good back-up, as has been proven with Wasilewski coming in for Moore - in my opinion, back in the late 90s, we were always at risk if Elliott or Walsh got injured.
Dan Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 I'm still not convinced as a defensive unit that we're any better than 2009/10. We're a far better side now but defensively? I'm still not entirely convinced by us at times. We do let in the odd soft goal. Although we have really tightened up of late. Only 3 conceded in 2014.
Manwell Pablo Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Certainly prefer our full backs to 02/03.
Jace Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 I would say since last week before Liam Moore was injured
Alf Bentley Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 I'm still not convinced as a defensive unit that we're any better than 2009/10. We're a far better side now but defensively? I'm still not entirely convinced by us at times. We do let in the odd soft goal. Although we have really tightened up of late. Only 3 conceded in 2014. This. If we do go up, I can see the defence being the part of the team that needs most change. I could see the addition of 1 striker and 1 defensively-minded central midfielder being enough further forward, with the players we already have. But I could easily see 2-3 changes in the defence. De Laet: Love his attacking contribution, but sometimes loses opponents at this level; tbf he often uses his pace to get back and challenge, but will that work against a higher class of winger/striker? Morgan: Very solid, but would probably need a more mobile centre back alongside him - is Moore experienced enough for that? Moore: Will surely become a Premier League centre back, but might it still be a bit early for him to start regularly? Konch: Fine at Championship level; good positioning/anticipation and stands off wingers well to compensate for lack of pace, but can't see this working so well against the pace and calibre of Premier League players. Wasyl: Good back-up, but not convinced he'd hack it in the Premier League In this league, we can dominate possession as we have players of a good calibre and operate well as a team, but in the Premier League the opposition would have much more possession. Would we be defensively consistent enough to resist?
ElusiveEd Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Talking of back fours, This was from Charlton a few years back, This was their defence against Chelsea.... Luke Young, Mark Fish, Jorge Costa and Jonathan Fortune.Young Fish Costa Fortune! Made me laugh anyway.
MC Prussian Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Wasn't our defensive record last year better than this season's? I count 24 goals against as opposed to the 28 now.
Bluetintedspecs Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 I think it's the best since Svens back 4, wouldn't like to compare with MONs as they were in Prem and IMO different gravy!
Guest Col city fan Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 People missing the important point again! Its the TEAM that is better defensively. Starting from the front. Nuge and Vardy hold it up well, Drinky and James control the midfield and the defence is pretty solid. We are defending well AS A UNIT.. Hats off again to Pearson.
Basingstoke Fox Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Well this could be controversial, but what about the 2007/8 season? I think we conceded amongst the least goals out of all the teams in the league. Don't get me wrong, I prefer the defence now because the full backs contribute an awful lot to our attack and I'd certainly rather have Morgan and Moore too but it's quite remarkable for a team to have one of the best defences in the league and still manage to get relegated. God we were sh*t to watch!
GingerrrFox Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Personally I do love 3 at the back. I think it must be from seeing Walsh, Elliott and Taggart manhandle opposition strikers under MON.
