Punditry

Given Jonathan Pearce's total inability to comprehend the goal line technology, Clarke Carlisle wondering why a Columbian couldn't get into the Ecuador side and Phil Neville telling us England have plenty of time in the 94th minute, the World Cup will offer great moments of punditry.

We should have a thread where you could put your good moments, insightful comments, mistakes, Andy Townsendisms (Is that a word, Clive?) and possibly memorable excitement after crucial goals.

Think my highlight so far has to be the Uruguay penalty on Saturday, given obviously for a rugby tackle of a challenge but Townsend was sure it had been given for handball, even though it didn't touch a hand. He then went on to claim it was an outrage that Lugano had hand balled it and tricked the ref into thinking it was a defender handballing it. Was just classic idiocy from him.

Its commentary rather than punditry but I almost turned the tv off listening to Jonathan Pearce chat shit about technology. It was cringing.

From now on with BBC I'll have Five live on using red button when possible

Jonathan Pearce was just a massive bell last night. Went the perfect way of confusing the fvck out of people from something that wasn't confusing at all. He saw 'No Goal' and jumped to the conclusion that technology got it wrong on the biggest stage - despite it getting perfectly right considering it was to do with a different phase of the incident.

On the flip side, it's been a joy listening to Thierry Henry on BBC. Am I the only one who has an unhealthy amount of admiration and respect for him? Nice of Gary to pick up on the 'getting away with handball' thing though with him lol.

Henry was ripping it out of Savage with a couple of quiet one liners bur I do think it's largely just his sense of humour, not genuine malice. He's the best thing on the BBC.

Knows his football, too.

Oh and shout out for Seedorf, too. Top bloke.

Never heard two commentators so confused as Keown and Pearce last night after the goal line DRS. Pair of dip****s.

Keown got it. I amazed he stayed so calm while Pearce was imploding. It was like trying to explain gravity to a child, it just blew Pearce's mind.

Seedorf and Henry need to be featured all tournament. That's the level that BBC/ITV need to be aspiring to, not rubbish like Alan Shearer.

It would seem those pesky foreigners out shine out players/ex players on the pitch and in the studio.

I thought the criticism of Phil Neville was a bit unfair. Thought he did a fairly good job and shouldn't really have been given the England game for his first ever game - seems a bizarre decision.

I also love Mark Lawnrenson - always look forward to him being on the tele. Love how constantly miserable he is and his sarcastic comments.

Shearer has been alright so far. He was the only one giving Rooney the stick he deserved, whilst Rio was defending his mate. Even Henry seemed to think he had a good game

I can also see the confusion with the goal line technology, since on the majority of angles the ball definitely didn't seem over the line. From the in-goal camera for example, it looked nowhere near over the line. I'm not 100% the final picture was an accurate representation of the ball's actual position, but I suppose we have to trust the technology. Then again, it's been approved by FIFA....

Phil Neville was excruciatingly boring. Lawrenson over him any day for me.

I usually like Keown but his line about Honduras being beaten because they were playing 4-4-2 was ridiculous.

Ferdinand seems like the thickest cvnt going as well.

His top lip pisses me off no end

I think people pay far to much attention to pundits and commentators. Yeah they can be annoying at times but people completely over state the hate.

An issue is that they influence a lot of people who watch the game. If they criticise a referee for making a mistake when in fact he's got it correct by the law, then kids go and take that onto a pitch on a Sunday morning. I'm amazed at just how out of touch some of these pundits are with the actual rules, it's actually pretty embarrassing.

Angles can be very deceiving. There's an article/video online somewhere showing a ball over and on the line from different angles and even the slightest angle makes the ball look like it could be touching the line when it's all the way over.

The television angle along the goal line is conclusive enough.

Phil Neville has apparently had specialist commentary and punditry training prior to the World Cup. I'm sorry but half my mates would do a better job with no training and suffering a hernia. Isn't even someone endeared in English football. I hate his blonde highlights, makes him look even more like someone who's had a sex change. I hate him. Fvck off

I agree, he is the only commentator both on BBC & ITV, who doesn't take things that seriously. Someone like Clarke Carlisle always has to elaborate on something, even if it's the littlest of things.

Lawrenson always get's annoyed, if someone goes down too easy & rolls around, you can basically tell he is crying out to say get up you fookin puff, or something along those lines.

On a positive note, I'm so happy that Tim Vickery is part of the 5live team. Such an intelligent and knowledgeable journalist.
