MC Prussian Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 No chance. Real fight for points is where it's at. We've earned our right to play in this division and now we've got to earn our right to stay.
fleckneymike Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 Again, I think this boils down to why you want to be in the Premier league. Just being there, existing, isn't enough. The 'millions' the Premier league offers wont ever see its way into my pocket, my ticket prices, my food, my drink so watching sides scrabbling around for it doesn't interest me.
Captain... Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 let say hypothetically we finished 16th the following year but with less points or 17th again but we got to the semis of the fa cup what if we lose the core of our squad, then scrape 17th again with the lowest ever points the original question is easy to answer, yes 17th will do but lots of folk are lost in this idea that a higher poistion in the league (bar relegation) means improvement if somebody offered you 17th for the next 5 years straight, what about then? in fact thats a better question. if offered right now 5 straight years of 17th placed finishes. would you take it or risk "growth" for a higher postion? No, I want to see us progress, not stagnate. What is the point of all of this to just be a shit team in the prem. Not expecting us to be challenging for Europe any time soon, but we have to have ambition.

Not expecting us to be challenging for Europe any time soon, but we have to have ambition. If we were to get say a league cup and/or fa cup in that time we would be in Europe anyway? I'm not saying id be happy with 17th for the next few seasons because I'd love to see us become more competitive that that but the bottom line is the same, we finish 11th or 17th we are still in the bottom half of the prem. however, there is more than one way into Europe.
Livid Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 No, I want to see us progress, not stagnate. What is the point of all of this to just be a shit team in the prem. Not expecting us to be challenging for Europe any time soon, but we have to have ambition. Which would realistically require us to spend at some point. With the current squad and lack of PL experience, yes I'd take 17th.
fuchsntf Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 No and no again. Ambition, targets for club, manager and players, should be set high. Fans especially the kids should dream, and enjoy the season. If you dont want to mix it with the big guns, dont join the club. Thoughts on 17th , starts the season on a fear factor. After 32 games ask again. What is at the moment a reasonable thought, already takes away the dreams and hopes per game, even per 5 to 8 game run. Dreams, fantasy, romance is where we fans should start, lets wait a bit before reality actually hits.Who knows we could just suprise ourselves. Hoping before game 1, on just survival, naaaa.
Aus Fox Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Throw in the FA Cup or even the League cup and I would take it. Otherwise no, I would rather roll the dice and see what we can do, 17th is the absolute minimum we should be aiming for, why would we settle for that before a ball has been kicked? Finishing 17th is unlikely to make us a better prospect for attracting new players than we are now. If you play the lottery 3 numbers is the minimum you aim for, if I offered you 3 numbers in Saturdays lottery would you take it before a number is drawn? Sure you win a tenner, but is that why you play?
Dan Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 if offered right now 5 straight years of 17th placed finishes. would you take it or risk "growth" for a higher postion? Absolutely no chance would I take that. We'd be more likely to progress if we were relegated.
Carlos88LCFC Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 No. I'd take 13th.I think we are good for that as well.We have a winning mentality in the team with a load of young skilled players who have a point to prove. 17th would be good that we stayed up, although an underachieved season in my eyes. leicsmac Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 I'd take 17th next season without question, but after that like many on here I'd want to see progress. That being said, the moment there is any progress from a team around our size they just get strip-mined anyway (ala Southampton), so perhaps expecting progress to a good degree is pointless as it won't come to anything. The higher echelons of the Prem are a closed shop and remain so unless you get a billionaire takeover and join them or the whole system collapses.

Sure you win a tenner, but is that why you play? It will make us a better prospect than finishing below 17th, we can build on a finish of 17th with very little difference between 17th and 8th, getting relegated would undo all of the hard work of the last few seasons and potentially mean starting from scratch again, the reward of finishing higher than 17th is minimal compared to the cost of finishing below 17th, that is why I would take it next season. (and now I have secured premiership survival we can put all our efforts into the cups )
Thracian Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Talking to a couple of mates today (Arsenal and Liverpool fans) about the upcoming season and their transfer activity and I made the comment that if someone handed me 17th right at this moment I wouldn't take it. They were shocked. Despite the lack of transfer activity on our part and the transfers made by our rivals how would you react if someone gave you the opportunity of finishing 17th? Take it or leave it? I think we have 3 more signings to come and will finish 13th. Thoughts? They won't so it's a pointless exercise really and why would you "settle" for anything but the best you can do in each and every fixture? Yes. I'd take top, but I'd want to earn it not be given it.
Manwell Pablo Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 They won't so it's a pointless exercise really and why would you "settle" for anything but the best you can do in each and every fixture? Yes. I'd take top, but I'd want to earn it not be given it. Utopian thinking, we aren't in control of how much effort the players out in and we wont play our best in every fixture. Besides the "best we can do in every fixture" might land us in 18th. I'd take it this season, taking into account the squad we've got at the moment and the fact that our main transfer target is an over priced Championship level forward who is no better than what we have. He just had two good games against us last season.
Guest MattP Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Yes of course, it would be a continuation of the progression we have seen every season over the last 3 years.
Zapp Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Absolutely no chance would I take that. We'd be more likely to progress if we were relegated. Not necessarily true. 17th and decent efforts in the cups would be better seasons than 11th and going out 1st round Would also mean we're established in the prem after 5 years I'm not saying I would take it, but what is your definition of progress? Because really there's no difference between 11th and 17th other than the comfort of knowing you're not being relegated for longer
Babylon Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Of course. There are short term and long term goals, just because that's what you'd accept this season doesn't mean it's your long term aim to always finish 17th.
Izzet is God Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 I think you'd have to take it...guaranteed survival and hopefully more to build on. The fianances alone make taking 17th a certain yes. Obviously we want to have more ambition than that and finish as high as we can. The top 6 gap in the Prem is so vast we could end up finishing anywhere between 7th and 20th!!! You just have to be realistic and admit that we want a foundation on what we can build on for future years in the Prem - 17th will give us that, 18th and below won't.
Bert Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 First season is about maintaining status. So yes, but then build on it.
WhispyWizard Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Would i take 17th? .... but just for complete disclosure, i would have taken play-offs last season.
Monsell1976 Posted 17 July 2014 Posted 17 July 2014 Yes, that's the hope, any higher is a bonus first season back
