serious question from exiled fox - what do Leicester people do these days?

When I were a lad, the answer was stupidly obvious, like my Dad they worked in factories, often in household names which have now all gone (Corahs, Wildt Mellor Bromley, Kemptons, Thorn Lighting, Marconi Avionics, GEC Whetstone, BUSM, Rearsby Automotive .etc...etc...etc...)

Where do most people work these days? When I'm back in Leicester it's really hard to know.

Who is the city's largest employer - the council or the NHS??

Close to retail alcohol outlets, chicken shops, bookies, pound shops, major chain mini supermarkets, Starbuck's and Gregg's.

I would say of the two the NHS is the larger employer.

On the private sector side, I would say it's mostly office based with businesses such as Centrica (British/Business Gas) having large offices on Aylestone Road and at Grove Park.

Leicester is poor for nightlife and not a patch on Nottingham or Birmingham, imo.

This is what folk do, nowadays:

- Act as Stakeholder Engagement Manager

- Be responsible for planning and overseeing the programme’s engagement with the organisations outside the programme who need to be involved in the successful delivery of the programme and its benefits. These include suppliers and other industry players together with consumer representatives.

- Work closely with colleagues across the programme who are dealing with these groups day-to-day through a range of working groups and bi-laterals

- Ensure that we have the right arrangements in place to capture and share feedback and to ensure consistent messages are being conveyed by the programme.

- Maintain communications with a much wider group of stakeholders including MPs and Local Government, community groups and special interest groups who all need to be kept aware of developments and can help promote awareness.

- Play a key role in driving forward the communications strategy for the programme, working with the industry to develop key messages and communication approaches and providing the main interface from the programme into the press office.

- Act as part of the Consumer Engagement, Roll-out and Benefits team within the programme which is headed by the Deputy Programme Director and we will be expected to be flexible and able to contribute to current priorities within the wider team.

- Take pride in its strong reputation in community involvement and the innovative approaches used to ensure local people are able to have their say on important issues which affect them and their borough.

- Take responsibility as creative, outcome focussed persons as part of the Community Involvement and Innovation Team, which is part of the Chief Executives Directorate.

- Work closely with colleagues to involve the local third sector as well as ensuring young people are actively engaged.

Yep, THAT stuff....

Define nightlife. Leicester is a decent place for a days drinking in pubs as is Derby.

Leicester have some okay pubs/bars, but if you're comparing them to the likes of the Lace Market or Riverside areas of Nottingham and Broad Street in Birmingham then they are poor.

Leicester gets a bad rep from people but it's nowhere near as bad as people say.

Some brilliant restaurants in and around town and plenty of decent boozers compared to a lot of the other cities I've spent time in.

Thankfully we are not one of those type of cities. maybe if you added all the different councils together (Oadby, Wigston, Blaby)

Pretty big sized creative industry in Leicester, especially % wise to population

Most amount of design agencies outside of London I think... of which I am one! :D

What do you design, if I may be so bold? Ladies' haute couture? Cabaret stage sets? Titanium dentures for Rottweilers?

I'm imagining more the latter....

lol

Short answer would perhaps we anything you see that's printed.... plus some web based stuff.

That could be from a logo, a business card, up to large brochures, vehicle graphics, adverts, posters.

I read that Leicester has quite a high amount of call centres, but I think you'd be hard pushed to find any particular speciality within UK cities these days. It's all a bit of a mish mash. I guess you could say financial services in London, oil and gas in Aberdeen, hub cap replacement vendors in Liverpool. But those are the exceptions.

Even in Liverpool that is surely a dead business judging by the number of cars that have hub caps these days

Call centre capital of the UK.

Some of the most important call centres are based here.

That must be why I can never undestand their accent..

Santanders head office, Next's head office, arguably E.ON, British Gas & the Royal bank of Scotland / Natwest's main call centres.

Yeah definitely got an accent.
