SecretPro Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 It's about adding something different for me with this one and supplementing what we have. You look at all our wingers and each of them bring something different to the table. We're not really in a position to be buying players that have everything in their locker, so it makes sense to do the same with the other positions. Whether it's in the AM in a 5 man midfield or the No. 10 role of a 4-4-2 he brings experience of this level, an attacking intent and good technical ability. Along with of course set pieces which are generally woeful (although that's partly down to how we attack them... or don't attack them as the case may be). Just because Wigan are where they are doesn't really mean anything. Some players perform under certain managers and within different team set ups and tactics. If he doesn't fit into their style of play, doesn't mean he can't bring something to the table for us. Top post. I think Maloney will be a decent signing and at that price a sensible but effective one. I'd play him in an attacking mid role at home and maybe as a number 10 away from home when we drop to 1 up top. Not sure why people are saying he isn't better than what we have? I'd say he's more proven than some of our players playing week in, week out.
Raj Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Fair enough. Good luck to him, i wont Boo him until the 20th minute of his debut then!!!
Nick Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 I'm not sure we have an attacking central midfielder that's creative and a goal threat from set pieces in the squad at all do we? The closest we have is Andy King and Cambiasso who doesn't play in the advanced role. Drinks Cambi and James can get forward but only Cambiasso seems to be able to score at this level. Great signing Nigel.
Alexikokopops Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Fcukin YES!!!!!!! Forget about that, just get him in. He's The Don. He's a game changer, but Wigan will try their best to fcuk us over after what we did with McArthur. This chap will fit right in here. Goes about his business very efficiently and is a match winner. Trust Nigel. I've wanted this to happen for the last ten years!!! It's as if nobody has seen the abysmal set pieces we take? Gone are the days that you have a player just to take set pieces but we are that bad that we actually have to consider this as a possibility. He's a game changer. Great signing. Best signing of the season this will be. Pearson's track record with players turning the wrong side of 30 whom the fans don't particularly want is exceptional. Signing of the season. Well said that man. Maloney will be the bollocks. I'm not sure what it is but something tells me you're excited about this...
Nick Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 I'm not sure what it is but something tells me you're excited about this... , I know - I'm happier for Ric than I am the football club in a weird way!
Ric Flair Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 I'm not sure what it is but something tells me you're excited about this... Hahahahaa. I've already given him a 10 in the Stoke match ratings. He's WEGUA
kingcarr21 Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 I genuinely believe Maloney will be a great signing for us. Its also probably the sort of player the other relegation teams were looking at. He can certainly get us a few assists/goals
Alexikokopops Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Hahahahaa. I've already given him a 10 in the Stoke match ratings. He's WEGUA Maloney free kick across the 6 yard box with Kramaric sliding in to get the winner in the 92nd minute. VERY WEGUA

Out Foxed Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 don't see why anyone wouldn't think this a decent signing
MrSpaM Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Wigan fans being rather complimentary of him this morning "Perhaps our greatest ever player! Best of luck shaun your a latics legend! Wish him luck at Leicester I hope he keeps them up" "One of Wigan's greatest players this millennium in my opinion." "Good luck Shaun, you were a great player for us and a nice fella too who stuck with us after we got relegated"
Bettsj2 Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Can you imagine if he's on the pitch, we get a corner, and James trots over to take it? Pure meltdown. Right let me just practice this, 'GIRRIT TO MLONEH YOU TWAH'.
Foxmeister Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Schwarzer is on his last contract so it's likely he will be on peanuts, Defoe surely can't be asking for too much considering he's been playing for Toronto. Defoe is reported to be on 90k a week which is why QPR couldn't get him.
AKCJ Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Watch him fail to beat the first man on his first corner. I'd put my house on it. Leicester is a graveyard for set piece takers.
Buzzell Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 The problem on here is a lot of fans are too quick to judge a player before he has kicked a ball for us Also with us signing a talented and exciting signing like Kramaric, majority of fans would want us to spend more again on more exciting signings. Maloney might look like a crap signing but obviously Nige thinks he can contribute to the current squad. Could be that creative spark that we need in the middle of the park.
Bagworthblue Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 People always seem to look at how we fit players into the starting line up. Games are 90 mins long and players coming on at 60 -mins need to be as good as thise who start if we are going to finish games strongly. Its a bit like the chat about strikers and why we need 5 or 6 quality strikers. I'd argue its a position where to play 90 mins effectively is a BIG ask. So you need potentially 2 on the pitch and 2 quality replacements with a couple to cover injury and suspension. If you compare our 25 man squad with more established teams, we have a fair few who none if us would ever envisage playing and would be a real last resort. We need to replace those with players we would all see as first team players. Thats the premier league. Good players do sit on and not make the bench. Maloney fits that bill
johnny the fox Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 very solid signing.. im surprised people would turn their noses up at a player who has actually won a major trophy in living memory. delusions of grandeur springs to mind.
dannythefox Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Happy with this, surprised he never went to Everton.
dpjfox Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 i assume a price has been agreed and permission to speak to the player granted, its the time that other clubs accelerate interest, theres still work to be done to get this deal in the bag but should be straight forward
Saladin Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 As usual the fee is different depending on which media source you read but if up to 1.1m which the Telegraph are reporting is correct then it's great business for us. Probably the main player to that run where we beat everyone in late 2011-2012 and an FA Cup winner of course but since we were relegated has contributed nothing at all. He still does well for Scotland though which made it all the more annoying. Personally I think his best days are past him and considering he was out of contract in the summer and we still managed to make a profit on him we had no choice but to sell. If he recreates the form he showed for us in that run we went on though which I'm assuming is what Pearson will look to him for, then it could be great for you. He's a fan favourite though for his exploits in the past and will see him as a fond memory when we're back in League 1 next season. Good luck to you all for the rest of the season. Interesting input. Let's hope he isn't past his best! Good luck to you guys too.
Scotch Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Grewks is absolutely spot on so I'm unsure why others are digging holes in trying to argue with him. Maloney is a creative little number 10. He'll clearly be fighting for a place against Nuge just behind the front man. Before I give you my thoughts on this (potential) signing, let me tell you a bit about myself.I'm Scottish,I was raised as a Rangers fan but got tired of the bigotry that came with going to Ibrox. When I was 14,I was taken to a Leicester game by my uncle who moved down there and have not looked back since. With this in mind,I can tell you straight up that Shaun Maloney is a left footed winger. He may have been moved to the #10 spot by Wigan in recent times to suit their system but he IS a winger. You may call it "Digging a whole" but it's more a case of me watching this whole guys career. I watched him break into the Celtic team as a winger,I watched him play on their wing when he returned,I watch him regularly play on the wing for my national team (he plays on the right for Scotland with Anya on the left and Naismith in the #10 role. When he first moved to Wigan,he played on the left, hell, he played on the wing for them last weekend. Apart from anything, have a look at our team. We are on the verge of signing a striker for 9m to play alongside a striker we signed for 8m. We have Vardy,Nugent and Wood to back those two up and at the same time we are short on wingers, especially left sided wingers. And with Shlupp and Mahrez away for at least a month it isn't hard to see that we have signed him to play LM. The fact that you seem to think you know better than someone who has watched the boy for his whole career is laughable. As for my view on us signing him, I think it could be a decent buy. Not an exciting signing buy any means but at that price and a decent wage,it is most certainly low risk. He would also offer something we don't have, a threat from set plays as well as consistency in his deliveries. Granted he has a knee made of Lego and can blow hot and cold but I would honestly play him over Schlupp every day of the week. I reckon that this is a decent signing, and if it's not,we are hardly breaking the bank.
dpjfox Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 for someone who is left footed it amazes me that he scores a lot of free kicks right footed

The place is crawling with jocks
