The plan is to have a Slovenia base for four days - then drive to Piran, before making my way off to Trieste for a couple of days, Udinese playing on the Saturday and then making the journey to Milan/Bologna for journey home

Some of the villages above Trieste are nice for a wander. Gostilna Brin and Ristorante Carso are two good places to eat I remember. There are also the 'osmica' which do good local food. Quite interesting to see a south slavic language in Italian villages, hard to imagine it was right on the border of a country that stretched all the way down to southern Macedonia.

In Trieste itself Buffet da Pepi is a bit touristy now but famous for large portions of sausage and sauerkraut and frothy beers. Good fun.

Looking at potential trip to Montenegro (Tivat/Kotor maybe) around October. Anyone got an idea how warm it will be? Is it doable as a half relax/half explore trip?

It's not particularly relaxing environment as it's bustling with the volume of tourists and it's even more compact than I expected. It will be mild but probably not warm, in the mid teens I'd guess. The walk up to the fortress is great, if you walk up the back way by the river you save the £15 entry, although you have to make a semi-dicey ascent over a rusty old hand truck and go back through that way to avoid the cost.

I went the week before October half term a couple of years ago, and I think it’s still my favourite country so far. Perfect balance of chill and lots of exploring the country. Stayed in a room in Kotor with an overlooking the bay for virtually £200 each for 7 nights. Will still be a fair few tourists about, but not as busy as the peak summer months. Montenegro is growing in popularity however.

Visited Lovcen, Durmitor black lake, Ostrog Monastery and Tara Canyon. Plenty of boat trips available for the bay of Kotor, and must go to Perast. From memory it was warm enough some days without being roasting hot, with a couple of overcast days. Balkans in the autumn can be stunning. My favourite part of the world so far.

Anglesey for a week in September. Self catering accommodation is a fraction of the cost compared to lots of UK destinations, especially if you're looking for dog friendly.

It's not an area I've ever visited so, looking forward to it and it'll probably be the last opportunity to take the pooch away for a holiday.

We were there about 15 years ago.

We only visited the north and east sides (Amlwch, Cemaes, Benllech and the part closest to the mainland with its great views across the water). Plenty of coastal walks.

We visited the former copper mine (Mynydd Parys/Parys Mountain). It was free to park (and apparently still is) and there were very few visitors (in August). It´s a strange landscape of old mine workings that you might spend up to an hour walking around.

Enjoy!

Yes, we were in Kotor yesterday. Traffic is crazy so I'd stay elsewhere and visit rather than stay there.

Montenegro is brilliant though.

I went in September last year and it was sweltering. Plenty of cosy little bars in Kotor to cool off in though.

Where would have the best weather with a four flight in late September?

Canaries, Crete.....am I missing somewhere?

Do you mean 4 hours or under? Mainland Spain, the Balearics, Malta, Portugal, Morocco will all have good weather in September

Yea

It's back end of September so thought the Balearics might be a bit dodge.

If you can push it to under 5 hours you've got Egypt and Cyprus which will be toasty in September, plus Rhodes and Turkey for 4 ish hours.

Lake Bled will be a decent chilled base.  You can do chilled out days at the lake or Bohnij lake close by or take day trips to cable car close to Bohnij or Vintar Gorge or Triglav National Park so plenty of options there.   Bled Castle is worth checking out and I saw tobaggining and base jumping activities going on too.

Do check out Postojna Cave- fun mini train under the caves which are stunning itself.  I think it is not too far off Trieste and doable as a day trip from Piran.

Easily my favourite country I have been to.

If you decide to go, then you phone probably won't work as we have found. I bought an e-sim for 15 euro from https://1.me/cg/for-tourists/

It's worked perfectly in all 4 balkan countries and for the same price as 1 day of EE roaming charges.

I know Slovenia well and just done 2-weeks there in June. PM me if you want any specific details. But whilst there would recommend a few bits in particular:

  • Lake Bled obviously, just beautiful although does get very busy in the summer. I actually prefer the less touristy Lake Bohinj which is about a 30min drive from Bled. Much bigger and more dramatic looking, with Moutn Triglav overlooking it.
  • Postjana or Skojan caves are well worth a visit. Postjana you get taken down into the caves on a train, then explore once down there.
  • As others have said Ljubljana is a great City, such a nice friendly atmosphere, great places to eat along the river, castle on the hill and their beer/bar scene has really improved in recent years. It does get busy but never feels like a tourist trap.
  • It's a 2-hour drive from Bled, but the Soca Valley region is just stunning, mountainous with the bluest river running through it. Loads of hikes, walks, climbs, rafting you can do here if you're into that.
  • Piran is a really pretty little town, completely pedestrianised and very Italian feeling. If you do get the time, Izaola next to that is also very nice and Rovinj just down the coast in Croatia is one of the nicest places we've been for years. The seafood and views were incredible.

Don't know anyone who leaves Slovenia without loving it so hope you have a great time! We go most years.

Looking at going skiing in Slovenia next February with my son. Any tips if you have knowledge on this would be appreciated.

re Ljubljana I remember going to 'Metelkova' in 2006 which is probably a massive tourist trap now but at the time was a still relatively cool post industrial kind of art/bar/cultural area and spent the night drinking copious amounts of Zlatorog with a very svelte, beautiful posh English girl (yes they exist) who was hit on constantly throughout the night including by one Slovenian guy who tried unsuccessfully to convince her she'd love his apartment because it was next to the Zlatorog brewery.

Been a few times yeh, have only been to Pohorje which is in Maribor. I'd say it's very unpretencious, so not your stylish Apres ski experience that some people go for. It was nice and cheap with a decent range of slopes. Maribor is also a fun night out if you plan to stay local.
