The plan is to have a Slovenia base for four days - then drive to Piran, before making my way off to Trieste for a couple of days, Udinese playing on the Saturday and then making the journey to Milan/Bologna for journey home

Some of the villages above Trieste are nice for a wander. Gostilna Brin and Ristorante Kars are two good places to eat I remember. There are also the 'osmica' which do good local food. Quite interesting to see a south slavic language in Italian villages, hard to imagine it was right on the border of a country that stretched all the way down to southern Macedonia.

In Trieste itself Buffet da Pepi is a bit touristy now but famous for large portions of sausage and sauerkraut and frothy beers. Good fun.

Looking at potential trip to Montenegro (Tivat/Kotor maybe) around October. Anyone got an idea how warm it will be? Is it doable as a half relax/half explore trip?

It's not particularly relaxing environment as it's bustling with the volume of tourists and it's even more compact than I expected. It will be mild but probably not warm, in the mid teens I'd guess. The walk up to the fortress is great, if you walk up the back way by the river you save the £15 entry, although you have to make a semi-dicey ascent over a rusty old hand truck and go back through that way to avoid the cost.

I went the week before October half term a couple of years ago, and I think it’s still my favourite country so far. Perfect balance of chill and lots of exploring the country. Stayed in a room in Kotor with an overlooking the bay for virtually £200 each for 7 nights. Will still be a fair few tourists about, but not as busy as the peak summer months. Montenegro is growing in popularity however.

Visited Lovcen, Durmitor black lake, Ostrog Monastery and Tara Canyon. Plenty of boat trips available for the bay of Kotor, and must go to Perast. From memory it was warm enough some days without being roasting hot, with a couple of overcast days. Balkans in the autumn can be stunning. My favourite part of the world so far.

Anglesey for a week in September. Self catering accommodation is a fraction of the cost compared to lots of UK destinations, especially if you're looking for dog friendly.

It's not an area I've ever visited so, looking forward to it and it'll probably be the last opportunity to take the pooch away for a holiday.

We were there about 15 years ago.

We only visited the north and east sides (Amlwch, Cemaes, Benllech and the part closest to the mainland with its great views across the water). Plenty of coastal walks.

We visited the former copper mine (Mynydd Parys/Parys Mountain). It was free to park (and apparently still is) and there were very few visitors (in August). It´s a strange landscape of old mine workings that you might spend up to an hour walking around.

Enjoy!

Yes, we were in Kotor yesterday. Traffic is crazy so I'd stay elsewhere and visit rather than stay there.

Montenegro is brilliant though.
