Am I missing something? Is a tally of 11 goals in 19 MLS games really anything much to shout about for a marquee signing? What would be the overall standard of the MLS? Off the cuff, I'd say equivalent to about a good English League 1? Or maybe latter half of the Championship? At that level, you'd expect possibly a better return than 1 in 2 games ish?

If Defoe had been banging em in, stayed fit and was joining us in top form, I'd be more excited. But I don't think he's played much for months has he?

Again, I don't think I'd go only on reputation. I'd go for someone fit as a fiddle, on great current form and who can come straight in and do a job instantly.

Defoe might fit the bill. He's quality. But is he in the right shape and form to save us from going down? I dunno..

It's a risk to take if we want to survive. Defoe has a reputation of scoring goals at this level, whether or not he still has the ability is another question, but his goals would prove vital for us to stay up. If we stay up, he's done his job, what was asked of him and contributed to our survival. If not, he leaves at the end of the season if we go down.

But who could we realistically attract (at a fair price) that is proven at this level? I don't believe we've got time to allow people to settle, we need an instant impact.

Besides, I don't think NP would sign him if he wasn't fit or very close to full fitness anyway.

Yes it is a risk but why take it?

Genuinely, I'd be so much more excited if the club finally came out with a real statement of intent on maximising our survival chances. If we were now strongly linked with a player like Ings for 7 mill (ish) I'd finally think we were having a real go at getting out of trouble.

Maybe we just don't have the dosh or just don't want to spend? But its stick or twist time really. Defoe IS a risk, not financially, but in terms of lack of game time, injury and age. Someone like Ings would only be a risk financially perhaps. Sign HIM, get him up front alongside Leo and I would fully expect him to hit the ground running. We know he can play off a big man, he's on current good form, is young and fit and is playing in the Prem NOW. That would be a more exciting proposition IMO. But maybe unachievable? I dunno.

Every signing is a risk?

Reading between the lines Toronto are awful ,once jermaine didn't make the World Cup squad he seemed to have lost intrest in them.

Hence us and qpr linked in the summer?

They ( Toronto fans )still say he is there best ever player?

We haven't got time to sign an un known quantity ..

The premier league know what Defoe is about ? GOALS.

Most goalscorers will score goals if they have chances created for them, regardless of if they're proven or not.

People keep posting "goals" etc but we still need to create the chances for him. It's not like he's going to join and we'll stay up outright.

I swear some people just go against the grain to say "I told you so"

m

no..its just called not getting overtly excited about something that may not transpire to be a guaranteed success!!!

Players coming in must be better than what we already have, is he better than vardy, nugent, wood, GTF, ulloa, and so on, I would say he is.

Defoe is a good finisher and cannot believe he went to America at such a young age, at 31 is the prime age for a footballer, why did he go ?.

Anyway if he does sign nugent will get some tap in's lol

This is a guy who is proven at this level and if it weren't for the obsession with Rooney and Owen would have had even more than he has already for England. He's still got pace and can get a goal out of absolutely nothing. In time, Vardy will be ready for this level, right now he's not and if we're going to have a chance of getting out of the bottom 3 we need to be taking every chance, not one in four.

Not sure about his recent form? His agent is doing a great job: Hull, Qpr, Palace and us all apparently queuing up - he should be looking forward to at least £100k per week... but will he help us???? - how many points will he add?

What about Callum McManaman at Wigan or Kenwyne Jones at Cardiff - they could work in the PL... not just there to pick up the wages?

Whats style is that. ??? Players like Defoe have played in many formations and styles, and have been successfull.

Another wasted throw away statement, lazy easy words.

Club and International low level coaching prevented this guy realising his potential.Could of been an England great, his scoring

rate was better than Owen's.Same thing will happen to Sterling, and Sturridge.Too many coaches insisting on tweeking or

changing individuals style, instead of using that raw extra dribbling ,scoring knack and instinct for goal..with pace

British coaches cant handle it, these players are quicker than modern coaches can think.

Good points well made, we train natural ability out of our players rather than nuturing it.

All really good strikers have a good first touch and compsure which Defoe posesses. As much as I like Vardy he just hasn't got it naturally. Perhaps this season in the Premiership might bring him on yet again with the experience.

I think to score 33 goals or whatever number it was at any level shows some composure, I think Vardy's problem is he lacks the technique to score in a variety of ways.

Voted no, but I'm undecided really, if it happens then I'll be happy that Nigel's got his man. My concern is that we're likely to go down anyway and so rather than sign an experienced striker who probably won't stay if we go down, I'd like someone younger with time to develop who would be willing to drop down to the Championship should the worst come to the worst.

Can't believe he'd come but only a fool would turn down such a talented player; one of thebest strikers in the last 5 years in th PL

I agee we need a centre back first and foremost but it's not an either or situation

Defoe has scored 27 goals in the last 5 years in the Premier League.

He's not been anywhere near an elite striker for about 6 or 7 years, hence why he's considering joining us.
