If we finish the job, what's our aim next season?

I emphasise again, it's still a big if!

However, next season could be a huge opportunity for us. There really will be so many average sides in this division that we, with decent summer signings, could really cement our place in the Premier League long term. Burnley and QPR look like goners, which means that one of Sunderland or Hull will stay up. Hull signed poorly over the summer and Sunderland need a complete and utter overhaul, something they haven't achieved in years.

Even if both of those experience a resurgence next season, you have the newly promoted teams coming up such as Watford and Bournemouth, as well as the play-off winners. Add to those the likes of Newcastle who've been dreadful for months, Aston Villa whose new manager bounce will fade and Crystal Palace whose new manager bounce already has faded, and we could really find a chance to push on.

Therefore, what is our aim next season IF we stay up? Is it mere survival again, or is it to push on and aim for mid-table with a nice little cup run? Is there any reason we can't emulate Southampton or Swansea in recent years?

Clearly we've five very important games to play, starting on Wednesday, but it doesn't hurt to keep an eye on the future. :)

I posted last season that our first target was promotion, our second target was stability and our third target was glory.  I haven't changed my mind.

There is a job to do in transforming this club into PL regulars that are not involved in the relegation scrap each season.  IMO that should be our aim next season provided we avoid the drop.  I'm not worried about cup runs, that will come as we improve the strength of the squad.

Silverware

The European tour that followed would be absolute filth.

I'd be happy with staying up, with a few more moments like the united game (wishful thinking perhaps) and vardy at west brom along the way. really looking forward to the atmosphere at the KP for the rest of the season too, could be even better next season.

Doing a Swansea and improving each season for the next 2-3 seasons would be good.

Still a lot of water to flow under the bridge this season though.

Should we survive, the first aim is always 40 points. You can set new targets after that.

Agree with this, the other thing I would add though is to not throw away our best chance of silverware by playing kids in the League Cup, the little FA cup run certainly benefitted us.

To avoid second season syndrome, avoid the drop and continue to sustainably build a squad capable of moving the club forward. Boring, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, many teams find the second season the make or break.

Some things never change eh.

Deja vu to back to last season when we were saying the same thing, and the start of this season, when we were saying the same thing. eg. let's try and emulate Southampton and Swansea.

The if part of if we stay up is far too big now to be concerned with anything else tbh.

Comfortable survival would be my ideal target.

That would give us another season to add/ attract better players.

Season after top ten, and then see how we go, I think for us, that the ambition.

The owners want Europe as their target, but that will take serious investment

Comfortable survival would allow me to enjoy the fixtures next season. That would be a real bonus. would be good to leave the KP having lost in a good battle and not be in a state of despair.

We need to make our defence stronger and add a quality central midfielder.

Emulating Southampton would be pretty cool, but I'd be happy with anything around 10th-14th.

Yep, Huth is a must and quality full backs on both sides. Could only see Morgan being a squad player and I don't think we'd get as many games out of Cambiasso as we have this season. The jury is still out for me whether James and Drinkwater have the ability to be premier league players so strengthening in that area could be very important

To follow the Cov in the 80s, Leicester in the 90s, Stoke and Swansea in recent times model. Get up, stay up and aim a place and a few points higher every year. Of course something in the cup is a bonus but somewhere between 10-15th is realistic.

If Bournemouth and/or Brentford join Watford in getting promotion that's 3 teams with much smaller resources that we should certainly aim to finish clear of

And then what? Nothing.

Being in the Prem is pretty pointless until the top 4/6 form a European breakaway league. Or Sky go bust.

Yes I am disillusioned
