I can't understand the negativity towards MON on here. Growing up in the 90's as a city supporter was some of the best times as a fan of our amazing club. I can only think that a lot of the negative comments come from those who missed those days due to their age.

This man lives and breaths football, his man management skills are second to none along with his knowledge of the game. He is the best fit out of all the 'candidates' bar Klopp, he is the best choice for a number of reasons.

  • He will galvanize our club following the NP's departure - We all need that to happen!
  • The players will respect him instantly.
  • The squad is a good fit for him.
  • His record with us, Celtic and Villa shows what he's all about.
  • He knows the league.

I don't think he's lost his way at all as some suggest, Sunderland wasn't his best time but then who would get enthused about managing them anyway?!

Personally if this does happen, I'll be pleased. Come home Martin !!

Those two points are fairly speculative. The other points are fair based on evidence.

As I said yesterday I would absolutely love Martin to come home.

I know there are some people who never experienced the highs we had under him and the only comparable feeling was under Pearson but believe me - those of us who can remember what Martin did would (almost certainly) always place him in far higher esteem than NP. This is the man who took us to Wembley 4 times in 5 years, winning three* of those finals. Gave us European evenings in Madrid. Brought Lennon and my all time favourite fox, Muzzy!

I know it may sound nostalgic but there's never been a time like Martin gave us. He is our GREATEST manager. Come home Martin!!!

Cant wait for O'neil to knock us back again!

Not saying I "can't wait", but he will, either today or tomorrow.

I want MON now. In the space of 2 weeks we've been linked with amongst others Hiddink, Cotterill, Preki, Klopp, Lennon, Bradley, Big Sam, Bruce, Pearson again, Hoddle, Laudrup, O'Neill, and an Ostrich. We've heard nothing from the owners, Neville, Rudkin or Whelan - it would seem that they are assuming the ostrich position.

I'd happily see a return for MON, christ having experienced his tenure 1st time round who wouldn't - I'm happy to risk the legacy.

With only 28 days before out 1st PL game there is little time to assess the squad, highlight targets, settle on your best XI, steer us through preseason. A decision needs to be made soon.

Hope no one resurrects the Sheffield Utd match thread.

Oh, hang on....

Because we were on Foxestalk in 1996....

MON is the man the Thais want according to the Times.

We are approaching the FAI this weekend; depends on MON if he wants to leave Ireland then most likely he will be with us. Compensation will be minimal imo.

I'd be very happy with O' Neill, considering some of the uninspiring managers we have been linked to, but I can't help but feel this is a move to butter up the fans... Let's face it the owners aren't exactly great at appointing managers who haven't previously managed the football club either!

lol it's like the never ending narrative in here.

I keep reading new pages of posts and trying to remember if I have Alzheimer's or Dementia.

For the love of God something needs to be announced lol

You can imagine it now: Who is this clown? Buying players from Chelsea reserves ffs . Feck off back to Ireland or Florist

So true online rioting

Who do we go after if or when he says no?

If he wasn't interested in the job Surely the FAI would release a statement due to the speculation. The fact they haven't would indicate there is truth in it. As for O'Neill, his stock has fallen dramatically. I cannot see any other Premier team being realistically interested in appointing him and due to his age, this would be his last chance to manage at the highest level and with a club he knows, where he'll be adored by the fans and not a team in disarray. I think the only way this will fall through will be for the owners to piss him off by taking control of signings which MON would not be happy with.

A Sunderland fan? Like Martin.

Not sure you can cherry pick Celtic, us and Villa as showing 'what he's about' and ignore the more recent jobs where he hasn't done as well.

Think this could go a bit like Pearce's tenure at Forest. We'll get the huge ovation and incredible atmosphere at the start of the season but after that we'll be left with a manager who hasn't kept pace with the game and where it currently is.

Think it's true that his past here is probably making some see this as a better appointment than it is (should it happen).

I hope I'm wrong but I feel apprehensive about this. Would rather have Ranieri or Allardyce.

Why do people keep insisting with the Pearce thing?  Pearce has been a bad manager throughout his career so far and never had a good time of it wherever he has gone.  In fact, his records in all his jobs is remarkably similar.  Gets off to a flying start for the first dozen games or so then it all goes belly up until hes sacked.  I don't recall any job hes ever had being any different.

Hardly the same as O'Neill is it?
