DB11 Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 So how has the pilot survived? Ejector seat or something?
leicsmac Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 So how has the pilot survived? Ejector seat or something? I would assume he'd have bailed out when he was sure he couldn't recover the aircraft. It seems that on this one everything happened so fast that he didn't have time to ensure the plane came down somewhere safe before doing so.
Crinklyfox Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 I live a few miles away from the crash site. That road is always busy and quite often there's traffic queued up as there are traffic lights a little further to the west. If the crash had happened during a busier time the loss of life would have been much greater, as it is it's bad enough. Now the worst part is not knowing the identities of the victims - must be agony for families with missing children or parents.

The BBC are saying he was dragged out of the wreckage, so either he was trying to correct the path until the last second or for whatever reason was unable to eject.

Ah right. Probably the former then - he knew that he was possibly coming down in an area where he wouldn't be the only one to die and was trying to stop that right until the end...that would make sense.
stripeyfox Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 I don't think he ejected. He may just have survived (up until now) by some miracle. But he was described as having "life threatening injuries" so I doubt his survival is assured yet.
Jon the Hat Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 It seems pretty clear the pilot didn't bail out and let his plane crash into cars, he was fighting it.
EastAnglianFox Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 You would just hope the deceased died from the impact, very sad to indeed..Witnessed a crash at Mildenhall when I was a kid but nothing on this tragic scale. The only crumb of comfort (if possible) you can take from this is after seeing the pictures, you would hope those poor souls felt absolutely nothing. Still hard to take in as mentioned, one minute your on your way to play football with a mate with not a care in the world, and within a couple of seconds it's all over. I always asume I'm an unlucky type person but jesus what are the chances of being on that part of road the exact second a freak accident like that happens. Heart breaking for those involved.
Hollism Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 I believe that this plane didnt have a working ejector seat. They are removed/deactivated when sold to civilians to prevent them being used for terrorism. Ie- loaded up with explosives, pointed towards a major city and then the pilot bailing. Even if he wanted to, he couldn't bail. It's incredible he's still alive though looking at the images.

It is likely the pilot in this case would have been battling to the end to regain control or at least steer the aircraft away from roads/houses etc. And, in the case of terrorists getting their hands on one - they generally don't seem to concerned with surviving in that sort of situation, so the ejector seat not working is unlikely to deter them.
Larry_LCFC Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Believe the toll could rise to atleast 20. Really is a case of the wrong place at the wrong time. So unlucky.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Apparently the last time spectators were killed at a UK airshow (obviously a few pilots have bought it over the years) was at Farnborough in 1952. Shows how stuff has changed - after a jet broke up in midair, crashed into the crowd and killed a load of people, the show carried on. The next aircraft to appear - the shiny new Hawker Hunter, no less. Not the most deadly but the one that sticks in my mind as the most shocking was the one in Germany in the late 80s, when the Italian version of the Red Arrows' display went wrong in a way that I still find quite hard to take in even now
Parafox Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Oddly, I saw this aircraft practising these manouvres over Bruntingthorpe just 2 weeks ago
stripeyfox Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Ramstein 88.Remember that one well. Haven't seen the footage for years but remember a jet cartwheeling into the crowd before bursting into flames.Just checked the details 3 pilots killed 67 spectators killed 346 spectators seriously injured August 28th 1988
Bellend Sebastian Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Ramstein 88. That's the one. Messy. There was one in the Ukraine more recently that killed more but it's the German one that freaks me out more for some reason. Maybe it's because it was pre 9/11, which pretty much rebased my shock level

Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 the ukraine video is still on youtube. bloody horrible to watch. think the pilots ended up in prison. Worst thing I've ever seen, absolutely horrific. The pilots were sent to jail. I advise people not to look this footage up as it really is one of those "can't be unseen" moments This latest disaster really is upsetting, the chances of it hitting where it did
purpleronnie Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Even though the odds of someone being hurt or killed at these events must be incredibly small I'm still a little surprised that these events take place so close to spectators, close to main roads, housing estates etc...Just the other week my dad was told to move as he wasn't allowed to stand on the grass to watch the football due to health and safety.
pSinatra Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 As I live in Cosby, I was really looking forward to the upcoming air show. The Vulcan will be doing it's thing on the Sunday. The last time it made an appearance was about 3 years ago & it flew straight down Main Street & so low it felt like you could reach up & touch it. Not so eager now. It's not a bad show with some decent vintage planes flying overhead & above neighbouring villages. I wonder if there will be a noticeable difference this year?
DennisNedry Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Why don't the pilots just fly the planes... why the need for all the maneuvers that are more likely to lead to a crash?
stripeyfox Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Why don't the pilots just fly the planes... why the need for all the maneuvers that are more likely to lead to a crash? Funny you should say that. The CAA has announced "significant restrictions" on vintage aircraft displays, including a ban on aerobatics - only flypasts will be permitted.
Beliall Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Too right, and long over due, cant keep getting 65 year old aircraft to do stuff like that Just watched the ramstein footage. ****ing horrific
Jattdogg Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Been a lot of crashes in general it seems. This one happened here in canada and killed 4 british passengers. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-34047797
