ImBlue Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 paying ridiculous money on a one season championship player is not good business in my eyes.. then again its not my money people want to throw about...I suppose 10 mill on a another bench warmer is a mere bagatelle ... Walcott? Bale? Oxlade? All young good players at championship level that have been successful. You need to stop being so pessimistic.
Fox92 Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 They'll hold out for more. He can go right to the top from what I've seen of him.
matty98 Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 With that line of thought we wouldn't have signed Mahrez. The only way we can have top class players is to develop our own and that means buying players with potential. Mahrez was good enough to come straight into the team though, Gray isn't so not a very good comparison
ImBlue Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Mahrez was good enough to come straight into the team though, Gray isn't so not a very good comparison Vardy wasn't? Albrighton wasn't?
Simo86 Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 I hate the idea of buying players based on what they could become, only bring in players if they are going to add something to the squad straight away which I doubt he will. We signed Jamie Vardy for a million from a conference side You have to take the odd gamble at times
AKCJ Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 "i said gray, whats going on" fits a treat that one does. up the city
matty98 Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Vardy wasn't? Albrighton wasn't? Vardy cost £1m and he still played alot in his first season even though he wasn't good enough, imo we can't afford to give Gray that many chances at this level of football with our current side and he'd cost £5+ million Also Albrighton was a free transfer so hardly a risk
AKCJ Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 They'll hold out for more. He can go right to the top from what I've seen of him. the sun seem to think he's got a buy out clause in his new contract for 5m
johnny the fox Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Walcott? Bale? Oxlade? All young good players at championship level that have been successful. You need to stop being so pessimistic. realism is not pessimism... I just don't believe in spending like a drunken sailor.... or everybody we try to sign will have a" Leicester tax" added onto to them.... not good business.
LCCFox96 Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Would love this one. The fact we have 3 wide players all currently performing very well, in Mahrez, Albrighton and Schlupp, it gives Gray a chance to come as 4th choice and us to break him into PL football gently with what I'd imagine would be mainly bench appearances. He would also be eligible for the u/21s to develop his knowledge of our style of play. I also really like the idea of adding a sought after young English talent to our squad. Another thought, about his attitude, I remember last season all throughout pre-season before he made his breakthrough Lee Clarke was praising his work ethic in training and his work rate on the pitch. That ultimately earned him his starting spot which he kept with pacey and attacking performances. Sounds like the kind of quality the endears Vardy, Albrighton and the likes to us.
Lesta Legend Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Mahrez was good enough to come straight into the team though, Gray isn't so not a very good comparisonI'd hazard a guess and say the idea of replacing perhaps the two best performing individuals (mahrez and Marc) with 'better' players isn't on the agenda. But bringing in a player who will add much needed cover on the wing with longer term thinking based on potential is perhaps the smarter move for our current squad.
TJB-fox Posted 25 August 2015 Author Posted 25 August 2015 Both Mahrez and Knockaert were signed as potential players to slowly move into the first team, but both excelled and rightly earned their place in the XI. Think this would be a good signing for the right price.
Hack Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 I'm sure Portsmouth fans were thinking just that when they were chucking the bills around like Sean Dyche.... I like to see us get good value If you every want to be a long term and stable PL team you have to spend. Yes as shrewdly as possible, but spending on talent is critical. It would be wonderful if we could fill our team with Marhez's at 400k but that wont make the fans happy long term or likely succeed. It is a fact of life in the big leagues of the world you have to spend money on great players. I am sure the fan base on here want us to buy talent, but have to be realistic as to what you have to spend. I don't know what it would cost to buy a guy like Gray, none of us do, which is why we have this forum to discuss our views and opinions. As I said in an earlier post, these owners are well established high wealth people, not like the owners of Portsmouth or the Icelanders who once owned West Ham. They are here for the long haul with deep pockets, not Man City style but bigger than a lot of the owners of teams in this league. I am not for one minute worried about the viability of the club now, irrelevant how much is spent on players. Not every player bought is going to be good value, but most will be.
surrifox Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 I hate the idea of buying players based on what they could become, only bring in players if they are going to add something to the squad straight away which I doubt he will. I seem to remember that in an early interview when they first took over the club the owners mentioned that part of their business model included the possible sale of players at a profit (so long as this did not weaken the side-ahem ). TBH they can read the papers and when they see the likes of Southampton can sell players for upwards of £25-£30 million (before the latest round of inflated fees) you can hardly blame them for wanting some of that. I would expect that there will be the odd bit of business with an eye on adding value. we haven't sold any players for big money and in fact at this time last season we were all wondering whether the money spent on Ulloa was excessive and would lead us down the path of bankruptcy.
AKCJ Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Tbh though He was absolutely doggo against Derby on friday.
The Railway Man Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Tbh though He was absolutely doggo against Derby on friday. He was, some people on here are actually trying to claim he was the best player on the pitch
Foxymcoxy Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Tbh though He was absolutely doggo against Derby on friday. His heart and mind are in Leicester already
RedSoxUK Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Vardy wasn't a huge risk at £1m regardless of what league he came from, looking back over his Fleetwood Town videos it was obvious he was playing way beyond that level. The scouting team would've assessed him and probably valued him way beyond the fee Fleetwood were asking, which seemed a ghastly amount for the league; but for the scouting team that was a considerable victory. Albrighton on a free is not a risk, that was a coup right there - he was decent for Villa too.

Does everyone remember that almost all on this forum thought it was a waste of 1 mil when we paid bought him from the conference and echoed even more after his first season. Compare to know when he now is selected for England and an automatic starter for us. He is 28 now not a kid. He wasn't a kid when he came to us 3 and half years ago. A lot of people have short memories and short level of patients for player performance. Aren't we all glad the club stood by him and knew what he could be. The same goes for others we have bought and will buy in the future.
Vindaloo FOX Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 we will not get him for 5 million, he has just signed a new contract they will want a lot more than 5 million. I think he will stay at Brum this season play first team football and improve as a player, if they don't go up this season i can see him being sold next season .
Buce Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 I think we all need to reshape our thinking on what is 'over the odds' these days mate. There are some players going for infeasible amounts of money and the gravy train shows no signs of slowing down. Am I making this upor did I hear this morning that Man Utd are still pursuing their interest in Neymar, valued at 245 mill? Dunno, Col, but you appear to be making up words.. Edit: Ouch! How stupid do I feel? Sorry, Col.
Rob1742 Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 A winger isn't he? Didn't we have a perfectly good one? A wonder player who could score miracle goals. What was his name errr, Anthony Knockaert. The guy who is flying for Standard Liege. Seriously shouldn't have let him go.
