Big money signings generally poor?

Recommended Posts

How many points did ulloa actually win us. A lot of his goals came in defeats or draws

in fact only two of his goals came in defeats. clown.

edit - and doubly in fact, one of those goals put us 1-0 up and the other made it 1-1.

Tend to agree on this but he did show glimpses of value in the league cup, he was solid. Like I have already said still so long to go this season all of the squad will be used no chance huth and morgan wont serve a suspension this season.

I honestly don't think he looks a poor player, I just think it's a bit odd to spend that much on someone who is a back-up, although Ranieri in fairness probably signed him for the first team so it's a bit early to judge.

I said 'only' but it would be unfair to not state Kramaric, signed for about £9mil wasn't it? Has hardly played, has scored three goals, not one of which affected the result. He looks a tidy player but we haven't got anywhere near our money's worth for him yet.

Accept you'll get the odd one wrong but I think our recruitment has generally been well above average for what we pay. Just look at the amount of money clubs like Liverpool and Spurs have thrown at players in recent years. Joe Allen was triple what we paid for Kante lol

Vardy has scored 10 goals in 10 appearances this season. And he cost £1 million. But 11 goals in 40 appearances is value for money at £8 million. Wowzers

You've gotta be a WUM, Vardys story isn't far off being a once in a generation thing. How many did Vardy score in his 40 games before?

Exactly this. The recruitment in the last 5 years or so has been outstanding and that's why were are now seeing the benefits. There will always be players that sink but we have definitely had more that swim.

You could turn it on its head and say how much profit would you make on the current players now.

Mahrez - 10mill +

Vardy 10mill +

Drinkwater 5 - 10mill +

that's just 3 players

the squad is the best we have had in years I would ever say the squad is better than what MON had. We never had such depth then.

Don't think he's a million miles off for Ulloa. I don't think he's been a waste of money but I wouldn't go as far to say he was brilliant business. Probably about worth what we paid for him. Mahrez and Vardy for less than £2mil on the other hand is enviable.

How much would Spurs or Liverpool pay for a striker that scores 12 goals in a season?

I'll give you Akinbyi and Mills.

Ulloa hasn't set the world alight but I haven't been disappointed either. I don't groan if I see his name on the teamsheet.

Far too early to comment on our summer signings!

You're right with Akinbiyi and Mills. That's it.

It's all relative though. Wise cost us how much, £1.5million?, for example...

Ulloas definitely been worth what we paid, which begs the question how on earth he can be considered a poor signing.

If you think our big money signings have been a success you are on another planet

This post is FT all over.

Someone MUST be REALLY REALLY bad OR a success.

Akinbiyi £5 million.

Matt mills £5 million.

Okazaki £8 million.

Kramaric £8 million.

Inler £5 million.

Ulloa £8 million.

You look at our starting line up and it's.

Schmeichel £1mil.

Simpson £2mil

Huth £3mil

Morgan £1mil

Fuchs free

Mahrez £750k

Drinkwater £1mil

Kante £5.5mil

Schlupp academy

Vardy £1mil

Okazaki £8mil

With the exception of kante who has been value for money. Our big money signings have generally been a waste of money so far. Ulloa had a good start but is very limited and definitely not worth his fee. What are your thoughts on this?

It's an interesting point to debate, though Kante is a big money signing and Ulloa was an important player for us last season. Historically our big money buys, from Clarke to Eadie to Akinbiyi to Mills, have not always been our most influential players. However plenty of our record and big money buys have, equally, been good players for us (Newell was our record buy, as were Draper and Elliott, while Claridge was up there too).

I suppose the most obvious reason for this is that, since the explosion in transfer fees that took hold in the late 80s and 90s, our 'big signings' haven't been, in comparison to the rest of the game, particularly big signings. If you compare the signing of, say, Akinbiyi to other City signings it was massive, but it wasn't even one of the top ten transfer fees in the EPL that year. Leeds, Villa, Coventry and Boro were among the clubs who splashed out greater fees.

there is no logic to this post at all.

5million for akinbyi back then was a big money signing, 5-8million (what we seem to be classing as "big money signings") is peanuts for the premier league nowadays.

Leicester have not had a "big money signing" in recent years! imo.

You need to do some homework.

I suppose to some 11 in 40 doesn't seem much, but perhaps this comes from watching so many years of second tier football, where 15-20 goals was a minimum for our top scorer. Looking at top scorers from last season, Ulloa was thirteenth in the Premiership, and only eight clubs had players who had scored more goals than him. If you add the fact that his goals earned us at least six points (the difference between going down and finishing mid-table) and a passage to the 5th round of the Cup, I think it's hard to argue that he was anything other than a solid signing.

he can't be called a bargian or anything, obviously, but his fee was a necessary evil. we needed someone who would score the goals to keep us up, we had loads of money from going up, we bought him for a bit and he did exactly what we bought him for. "flop"?! no chance.

8 million (or whatever it was) is a very small fee by premier league standards anyway. just big compared to our previous signings because we haven't been in the prem since the money turned mental.

Imagine thinking 11 goals In 40 appearances equals value for money for £8 million lol

At this level. Do you know how much money we got for staying in the division?

11 goals is decent at this level and £8m aint that much.

Besides, he's not left, he may play a big part in seasons to come. So how do you know whether he's a success or not? The £8m doesn't just cover last season, but his whole time here.

Posted

Also Akinbiyi for 5 million back then is probably about the equivalent of paying 15-20 million for a player by today's standards.

I saw an article on this in Four Four Two recently and it's actually nearer 10-11m.

Ulloa was worth the money, as was Shinji. Kante looks great value.

11 goals is a decent return for a striker in a struggling team. Vardy might get 20 goals this season but that is exceptional. We sold nuge for £3m, so is £7m for Shinji that bad? I'd say no.

Inler is being kept out by DD and Kante's good form. In any event we needed some more cover their.
