We HAVE to focus on the league more than a cup.

Premier league survival is worth £100,000,000+ in kept revenue, Just because we are 5th does not mean we can not still end up in a survival scrap (although I doubt it now this season we look pretty safe)

Give it another season then I'll care about cups, although this was a fantastic opportunity with arsenal and chelsea out.

There had to be one.

It would take a spectacular dip for us to finish below the likes of Newcastle, Sunderland, Bournemouth and Villa. Even if being in the cup did actually have a direct effect on our league position, what's more important to a fan? I'd much rather come 16th and win the cup than 7th and not. We would've been one game away from a two-legged semi final.

win on saturday and all this bellyaching will be forgotten.. staying in the premier is the be all and end all for this season..

Maybe for you, we're pretty much already safe so I actually wouldn't mind trying to win something, that's actually the idea of the sport.

I think frustrated is how I would describe last night, the team he put out was the team that beat a relatively strong west ham team in the last round. I wouldn't blame CR because he has always daid 40 points is his main goal this season and that has to come first. Would people be annoyed if we started Vardy Mahrez and Drinkwater and 2 got injured like Ox and Walcott for Arsenal, the team that played bar a couple showed that they aren't ready for the premier league yet and we will now need to use the reserve matches to get them up to match fitness.

I like your optimism but we are no way near safe yet. We are playing out of our skin at the minute and we have a tough December where we could quite easily pick up no points. I personally think we will get some but if we don't it wont take long to be in the bottom half.

Sums it up really for me. My favourite memories of that time are the second legs of the three semi finals. Absolutely epic games. We should be currently one game away from a repeat of that. To play so poorly and then blow a lead is very disappointing.

Wimbledon my best ever.

Good Lord.... is that like we were pretty much already relegated last season. We of all people should know weird shit can happen, there is a long long way to go.

I'm disappointed we lost, but I'm not going to moan about the team selection. There is plenty of talent still in that team despite being pretty much the full reserve team, as they proved against West Ham. It didn't click this time which isn't a shock, but they all earned the right to play in the West Ham game with a good performance.

We're 66/1 to go down, the same price as Everton. We have an extremely good team this year, no way will they not hit the 36-37 point mark from here.

Arsenal and Man City aren't safe yet either but I can assure you they won't go down.

Not that it's even relevent anyway, if we were to somehow go down from here it would have nothing to do with the fact we played a first team on a Tuesday night against Hull at the back end of October.

What if three people got long term injuries. Then it would.... ;)

I preferred you much more last season when you were the voice of reason among a sea of negativity, rather than the stick in the mud voice of reason among a sea of optimism haha.

Firstly, we ain't safe in the league. Not until we've 45+ points on the board.

So many people bitching about team selection - if we'd have seen it out for a 1-0 (if Schwarzer was capable of doing his job) then none of you would be moaning about picking a weaker side.

Yeah we're out of this seasons league cup - but if you want to build a side thats capable of competing in the League Cup and FA Cup for the next few seasons, then staying in the Premier League is imperative. It really does seem like some fans would throw away a stable future for the club just for a half decent cup run.

Then that would be extremely unlucky, but if we use that logic we'll never play a first team in a cup competition as being mathematically safe probably won't happen for us until March earliest most PL seasons.

You really think we would be throwing away a stable future by trying to win a cup? You are bonkers.

Thank god no one had that attitude under MON.

If we were a top 4 club playing European football I could understand that team last night, it would be a lot for the first team to play virtually every week on a Tues/Weds but our first team hasn't had to play a midweek game yet this season.

I have a huge problem with the idea we should sacrifice chances at winning trophies to finish 8th though.

Given our current position not putting everything into last night was criminal.

Yet at the same time fans are desperate for Benalouane, Inler, King, Kramaric and Ulloa to play more so something has to give? Personally I like to see fringe players who I believe should play more in the league given game time in the cups. It was the platform for Fuchs to show his worth and has since come in to the first team and shown he is head and shoulders above Schlupp at left back.

Nobody was moaning too much when the 10 changes we made vs West Ham produced some stunning football and on the whole a great team performance and win against currently one of the best teams in the division. It's very easy for fans to cry poor team selection but i'd be a bit pissed off if Ranieri had played his strongest XI as his intentions early one were this cup would be about squad rotation.

I can only presume anyone who doesn't care or is even happy about us going out doesn't remember the MON years? Trips to Wembley and European trips are fantastic things to do.

Really shouldn't need to say this but being a football fan should be about winning trophies, not increasing the bank balance of owners or shareholders.

Hope we never qualify for the Champions league, no point if we can't manage two games a week.

Yeah fantastic days, didn't manage the Europeans which I regret.

The only thing I would say about staying in the Prem and increasing the bank balance for the owners, they have proved so far that they are prepared to spend so we could yet again improve the squad and I think thats how we have to view it,and maybe in a year of two those odds improve.Matt we are very lucky to see those MON days but it would be fantastic for the younger fans and more importantly me to go through something like that again.just look at the change since our owners took over( and Pearsons input) it is getting closer and closer. We have made huge leaps, owners, managers, players even us fans in those years.Very positive place to be at the moment.

People worry about this loss having an impact on our league form.Arsenal drubbing the other week next match away win.

Not quite what I said is it.

What I said was it seems like other people would prioritise cup runs over Premier League survival.

I'm not even beginning to say the two are mutually exclusive - of course they're not. But it will always be a compromise when it comes to team selection in the early rounds of the cup, especially the League Cup as it comes much earlier in the season.

What logic would that be, I've not offered an opinion in that post about it being right or wrong to select or not select players. You said you couldn't blame relegation on that game, I created a scenario where it's possible that you could.

Posted

We took a chance with selection and it didn't work, if you look at the pre match thread lost were picking similar sides. Everyone is always wiser after the event.

I'd rather we played our strongest side but at the same time we needed to see other players.

Are fans really desperate to see those players play more? I want us to play our best team in order to try and win things. Fair point re Fuchs but most people didn't really need to see a cup game to prove he was better than Schulpp at left back, his pedigree made that quite clear.

I can't believe anyone would be pissed off with Ranieri if he decided to play his strongest team, Bury away I think was fine as we clearly still have a reserve team far better than them, West Ham game could have gone either way but yeah, if we weren't taking it too seriously then so be it, last night we're in the last 16 though and we are flying high in the league, surely that's the point to say maybe this is something we can have a go at, let's say we had won, would you still use the reserve team in the QF? SF? Would you still be playing Dodoo, Schwarzer etc in the final? I very much doubt it.

I get the logic of doing this very early but back end of October with a QF place at stake? Not for me. It looks even worse now with Chelsea and Arsenal going out. Man City have actually put a first team out in this competition early rounds and they have to put up with playing Champions League football as well while most of the division is resting, they are sitting top of the league.

We should be sat here today one game away from having two of those magnificent electric semi final nights and maybe even two away from a trip to Wembley and three away from a three stop tour of Europe, had we played our best team last night I'm almost sure we would be.

Pisses me off when people use the phrase "the players oviously don't care" whenever we lose to a "lesser" team.

Well, looking back at the game yesterday, it was a chore and nothing really pretty to watch. Apart from our back four, I could see little to nothing creative or with intent coming from our midfield four and/or our so-called strikeforce, even after Drinkwater and Vardy came on.

The substitution of Mahrez had potential, but it was too late in the game in my opinion.

2/3 of our squad yesterday cared little, had no impetus and were lacking much-needed urgency, precision and simplicity going forward.

Also, there was no proper build-up play from the back, most of our moves going forward were erratic and fruitless to say the least. Count the amount of times our midfield or strikers gave the ball away needlessly.

But the flip side is that it is important playing time for the likes of Inler, Kramaric, Wasilewski, Benalouane and a chance for young talent like Chilwell and Dodoo to play, if we don't use them in the cup and we don't use them in the league then they will stagnate, they had an opportunity to stake a claim for the first team, Ranieri showed with Dodoo that if  you do well in these games you will get your chance in the league. It is also a chance for Ranieri to learn more about the rest of the squad.

The only selection I disagreed with was Schwarzer, Kasper doesn't need resting why not give a youth goalie a game.

The team we put out had 4 current internationals in Okazaki, Inler, Kramaric, King, 4 former internationals in Schwarzer, Benalouane, RDL and Wasilewski, 2 promising youth prospects, one who had already scored 4 in the competition, and Albrighton who has been a big part of the first team this season. It is not comparable to the side Pearson played against Shrewsbury last season, that was an  appalling side. The team last night should have been enough to play better against Hull, no guarantee on beating them, but the performance is more disappointing than the result.

Of course we want to win the game and the cup but we need to manage the squad, keep players fit and fresh and ready to step in to the first team should we have injuries.

Total chance blown. Awful performance, lucky to have made it as long as we did and yet again we'll sit there wondering what might have been. Everton, Stoke and Sheff Weds through so far - I'd have fancied a full strength Leicester at home to any of them at the minute, even Everton.

Hull, Villa and Shrewsbury the last three teams to knock us out of cups. Embarrassing.
