A bigger stadium, what are the options?

Recommended Posts

It's been obvious for a while that the KP as it stands is way too small for the level of ticket demand. Since we got promoted, I think only one premier league game was not a sell out. In short, we need to have more supporters in the stadium. So , what are the options? We could build on the existing stands, but what about an even more radical approach of a new stadium entirely. Thoughts?

We sold out Filbo for years before we built the new stadium, and that helped push us into administration.

Another few seasons selling out every game then we can consider it, but doing anything that will temporarily reduce capacity while we are selling out is big risk with relegation always a possibility in coming seasons.

If we were by any chance to get into the champions league next season, the money that we earned from this would probably pay for any extension we plan to have.

Let's just walk before we can run though.

Remember we have a certain Peter Soulsby to contend with. I suspect that if he had his way we would see the ground moved to somewhere no one cares about, such as Coalville!

It does need expanding that is plain to see.  Demand is outstripping supply pretty much for every home game.  It's ok saying that we should become more "established" first but you have to deal with the here and now in my opinion.  If you can get more bums on seats right now, then do it. You can't not do it for fear of relegation.  If we want to become a bigger club and have more of a chance of staying put in the premiership, then more through the turnstiles helps that no end (unless....your Newcastle I guess).

Certainly if we are to become a major Premier football club, the present capacity of 31,500 is not enough. Building a new stadium is out of the question as the present one is still very modern & only a few years old, not to mention the astronomical cost involved.

IMO if we finish this season in the top 6 & I believe we will, then I would like to think that the owners will get things moving to increase the capacity to 40,000

It's about time the F.A or whoever, allowed clubs such as City to make part of the stadium for fans that want to stand. Surely with the knowledge gained & modern technology safety can be achieved? If this were allowed, it could even increase the capacity to 45,000

Build the stadium ASAP, whether that be a new one or adding to this one.

The demand is there and a whole generation can't see their team.

No doubt we'll be relegated again at some point so at least leave a legacy rather than spending all our money on players and wages only to go back to square one.

Adding the 8 thousand in our current position seems a no Brainer.  With European football likely next season. The work could be carried out during the close season and ready in time for the new season.

We should walk before we can run. I think the East Stand is the only one that can be built on and that would take it to 40,000 in total. Plenty enough.

It's not the only stand that can be built on, it's probably just the easiest stand to build on. It wouldn't necessarily have to make it 40,000 either.

If they wanted to they could increase the capacity where they want, how they want. Maybe it would cost a bit more money that they way it was originally designed to.

As a fan I'd like it to be a bit bigger, but more importantly a lot nicer. The design of our ground is awful and we deserve a lot better. However, nobody who would have a say in it cares about that, so they'd just make it as big as they could, as cheaply as they could.

If it was to expand 40,000 would be pretty much the max I'd want, any bigger would be over the top for a club like us.

If it was me, I would personally head for the expansion of 42k to start with, which is presumably adding another tier onto the East Stand. However, if the ticket demand remains high for years to come and we consistently sell out the 42k seats, as well as maintaining being a top half/ top ten BPL side, then I would look to expand to 50k and so on. The most positive thing about expansion of the ground is giving more fans the opportunity to watch us play, and I think that's a really good thing. A dream for me, as for most City fans would be to see us maintain a position in the top 10 or the top 6 of the Premier League for many seasons, and then coming with that a stadium capacity of over 45k.

To a certain degree it is difficult to know if say we expanded the stadium now (just for instance) to 45k, whether we would actually sell out every seat every home game, against both the traditional top six clubs and the other teams in the division, and I'd be interested to know if we would actually keep up the high attendances but in this example 45k every match. Ticket pricing and form goes into it, of course.

I'd give it 5 years of sustained Premier League stability before considering stadium expansion.

We have consistently filled the KP for a season and a half, but last season was our first in the PL for a decade, and this season we are flying. Of course, people will come in their thousands when those things happen. If we are still selling out in 4 years time once we've (hopefully) stabilised our PL status then definitely expand the stadium.

It was only two years ago that 19,153 people watched us beat Blackburn in the league at the KP. Our support is as fickle as anyones, and it's hard to see how demand for tickets at the KP is sustainable at current levels.

Deckchairs should be going for a good price at the moment. Easily fit a couple thousand up on the roof.

The wait until we're established argument makes no sense. Two thirds of Premier League clubs are never 'established' and are only a season away from relegation. Look at Swansea... last season finished 8th, this season in serious trouble. No time to wait.

Expand now or never. Over to you, Top
