GaelicFox Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 So what credible link have we got that says we are after Pelle? Massive Brill Cream Lorry outside stadium Monday !
NotTheMarketLeader Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 But aren't we asking him to play a very different role to what he was playing last season (and for Brighton)? In the same way you could say Vardy has been transformed by being used as more of a focal point of attacks, has Ulloa suffered because he is no longer the main man? The concern with signing Pelle for me is that I'm not sure how much varience he would give us from Ulloa, in which case does Ulloa then leave - leaving yourself with the similar type of player but an unknown quantity within our current setup. And if we can't get Ulloa firing at the moment, does that not also cast doubt on whether we could do any better with Pelle? At least with Musa, there are comparisons to Vardy, but he'd still give us something a little bit different too - so if you took the £5 million we'd need to pay for Pelle and add it to what we bid for Musa, you've then got CSKA's asking price, that's what I'd be leaning towards. Imo Pelle is a far better player than Ulloa. He's playing international football and I've read has 9 from 22 starts this season. They are similar, in that are bigger 'target men' than others we have, but I would expect him to be a replacement for, not an addition to Ulloa. At least in the starting line up. Anyway, Can't we get bloke from Moscow as well - I do see it as a priority get get someone of Jamie's ilk.
RedSoxUK Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 Remember the talk of him before Southampton came in for him last season; looked a good punt then. I don't think Ulloa was our second choice to Pelle, Walsh and Pearson definitely highlighted Ulloa as their main target, as with the persistence to get Brighton to sell. But with Pelle's goalscoring record in Holland put with the fact he's a target man and plays akin to Ulloa, I wouldn't be surprised if we wanted Pelle too back then. Was fantastic for Southampton last season, a very relient and consistent striker, even now. I wouldn't frown upon his goalscoring record for Southampton at all - in fact it's a very good return for him. His hold-up play is arguably the best in the Premier League, perhaps Bony and Lukaku.. but still. I don't think a striker has a better header, a strong physique, and can lay the ball off so easily as Pelle. For 5m? Forget his age that's a ludicrious price for a man of that talent. Southampton would be absolutely bonkers to sell for that price at this stage in his career, and I don't think he would want to come, even after Charlie Austin has arrived. Southampton have a very good scouting and transfer system, so I doubt they would let Pelle go to us for as little as 5m, and 5m is little money in an exchange between premier league clubs for a striker who scores over 10 goals a season.

I remember Pearson saying at the time of signing UIlloa that he asked our central defenders who was the most difficult attacker they had come up against the season before and they both said without hesitation Ulloa

Babylon Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 Don't really see the point... as a replacement for Ulloa that's fine. But all we're doing is effectively replacing our third choice striker with another who will be third choice. With Ulloa still here it makes little sense to have two target men when that's not how we play. Someone much more like Vardy, or an exceptional 11 would make more sense... as they are either a plan A replacement or adding something we don't have. Pelle is just a better plan B.

I do wonder at what point they might get a bit frantic in their efforts to bring in a striker. Yous ee it with clubs every transfer window and especially in January when the time ticks away. As we are a club that does seem to take it's time in getting signings across the line we must try and get it sorted before monday as we'll only end up frustrated and with either no-one or someone like Crouch on loan!

When I'm thinking of our needs right now, to get someone in similar to Ulloa, who may be better but is still an unknown in terms of how he'd fair with us is not a sensible step mid season. It seems an unnecessary gamble,ni don't see Pelle making or breaking our season. I'd also lean to just the one striking addition, because any new player needs to build up relationships between fellow players in order to flourish and that takes time on the trainning pitch and in matches - so at mid season, where time is not on your side, having two new strikers could be more problematic in this sense.
LegendOfJoe Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 I really can't see this ever happening - although i do believe that he would be a good 'replacement' for Ulloa. Emphasise the replacement because I wouldn't want both Pelle and Ulloa on our books. Pelle is a definite step up to Ulloa though.

I think we have identified that in order to counter more effectively, we need somebody who can hold the ball up effectively under pressure to allow players to run beyond him (vardy, Shinji, Riyad...). Ulloa's poor control and anticipation make him ineffective in this role and Pelle would do this for us fantastically IMO. Plus he's just as good as Leo in the air I'd love to get him in.

Do we need to counter more effectively that much? We're second top scorers and known for being rather good at it. That style falls down completely though if Vardy is injured.

Any signing is an unknown in terms of how they would fair with us right now. Spoke to a few Southampton fans and they think he's a bit lazy so may not fit the bill from a work ethic point, but who is to say he wouldn't do a job for us for the remainder of the season? Saying that you can't knock a guy who has done well in the Premier League already and is currently leading the line for Italy and getting goals along the way.
RoyFox Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 Hmm Southampton supporters saying he's lazy, hands on hips and shouts orders at players... Also slow - fit right in then ...

The reason we counter so effectively is because we don't hold the ball up, which is why we don't look the same without Vardy. Get it and go, don't leave them time to get back!

Guest CityFan 06 Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 Can't help thinking with the form our players are in, and with them around him he would score goals. Goal record is good.
lgfualol Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 Hmm Southampton supporters saying he's lazy, hands on hips and shouts orders at players... Also slow - fit right in then ... It seems like he is their Ulloa.
Bluearmyfox28 Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 The more I think about this, the more I'm warming to it. However can't see him wanting to come him if he isn't guaranteed a starting place every week?
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 Hmm Southampton supporters saying he's lazy, hands on hips and shouts orders at players... Also slow - fit right in then ... Strange, they all seemed to love him last season when they were in the running for champs league and he was scoring goals. Fickle bunch

Fickle bunch They worshipped him! He's got me a load of points on sun dream team come to think of it, I change my plea to GERRIMINN!!!
Oxfordfox83 Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 Not wanting to cause a stir but theres a lot of talk of we need top 4\6 players - get a feeling a few of us have delusions of grandeur at the minute. Pelle is a solid PL player with a decent scoring record. Let's get real individually we have 3 at most top 4\6 players - our success this year is built on something different. Not saying he is my preferred choice but at 5 mil certainly good value. Fuchs, Vardy, Mahrez, Kante easily, and you could make strong cases for Kasper and DD.
woznotwos Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 He's 31 now isn't he ? Would take him if all else fails on other fronts but would be happier if we got one of our main targets.
Raw Dykes Posted 28 January 2016 Posted 28 January 2016 Fuchs, Vardy, Mahrez, Kante easily, and you could make strong cases for Kasper and DD. I agree. Amartey could be another. I can't wait to see him play.
