Okay not sure if this goes here but my niece has just told me she self harming due to things that are happening at school, am not sure what to do as live really far from her. She basically told me that she feels alone at school as the friends she has keep, keeping her out of stuff they do and now she doesn't have any friends and when she trys to make new friends the old friends ask her to her friend again all goes well for a week or 2 but then they do the same thing keep her out and then stop talking to her. She then goes and makes friends again and so on. She has also said that some times the girls tell her new friends to stop being her friend too. She has spoken to mum and dad but they don't seem to care and when she spoke to a teacher she feels they don't care. I would like to make her feel special and loved but not sure how to help her. I have said to her she can speak to me when ever she wants and told her it's okay cos they won't be Ur friends in the long term as u will find new friends etc and told her to just be her and soon people who are like you will come and people who aren't will go and that's when you know they are real. I also told her to join out of school stuff they she likes cos then she would be around like minded people but I dunno if that was the right thing. I really feel for her and wouldn't ever want her to self harm or feel like no one cares is there anything else I could possibly do from far? And when should I be really worried?

Tell your niece that what she is doing is serious, that you can’t not tell anyone, and agree that you can contact the school.

Call the school, ask to speak to her head of year or the Head.

Let them know what you know, explain the family situation, and ask for a referral to CAMHS (https://www.leicspart.nhs.uk/service/child-and-adolescent-mental-health-services-camhs/). CAMHS, like everything else in society, is stripped to the bone following 13 years of chronic underfunding; it may well take a year or more for her to begin seeing someone. The earliest the process can be kicked off the better.

In all probability, they will say they can’t action a referral from a distanced uncle, but they have a duty of care and will need to speak to her and her parents once made aware of the situation.

Self harm should always be acted upon.

Struggling right now. Had my 1st counselling session in nearly 2 months today. Made a few plans but I just can’t find the motivation to go with them even though they’ll help me.

Just staying up all night all the while right now and then sleeping most of the day. Unhealthy routine I’m in but just finding it really tough currently.

I really want to get back into working but I don’t know whether I’ll be able to hack it, I couldn’t last time.

Anyone here have experience with microdosing?

I haven’t, although I have seen a lot about it on YouTube. Presume you mean with psilocybin?

The studies on the effects of this on depression appear to be very encouraging, but having taken magic mushrooms recreationally about 15 years ago I would air on the side of caution as I can’t imagine any human would be able to function in the state I was in lol

I hate being jealous of people in a relationship but having trauma makes me find intimacy scary... I just zone out whenever I am intimate with someone. Most of the women I've attracted have been abusive too so now I just pull away whenever I notice a negative trait.

No experience, but I do recall reading that research into efficacy has had mixed results, sometimes with placebo groups achieving similar improvements in mental health.

There is research being conducted with if I remember correctly, psilocybin, where a fairly hefty dose is administered as part of the therapy process. In this respect and from a fairly layman point of view, a person's understanding of their cognitive processes could be important to the effectiveness of the psilocybin.

Considering that therapy can require people to work with a professionals on things like possible problematic ways in which we evaluate everyday situations, it may be that the psilocybin makes it easier for us acknowledge these issues and further establish new ways of thinking when it comes to these situations.

Again, I could be talking out my ass to a certain degree, but thought I'd offer a response with some basic understanding.

Tough time to be single. Hold on to the thought it won't always be this way though

They have Valentines over there? Don't ever let that make you feel bad.

The studies are often undertaken in the presence of therapists who know what they're doing. Smashing mushrooms in your room is not going to help you to overcome psychological trauma. Likewise microdosing may help relieve some stress but you need outside expertise to help you to make permanent change.

If you go on spotify, there's a podcast lecture called Can Psychedelics Cure Depression by the Weekend University. The prof doing the lecture ran the trial in the film magic medicine. Give it a listen.

Yesterday, my favourite person in the world told me I am her favourite person in the world.

I'm aged 52 and nobody has ever told me that before, never mind being told it by the one person I value over any other. I cannot tell you how special it is.

I thought this worth sharing. Be hopeful and keep going.

Mate, this is so lovely!

Thanks for sharing.  It made me smile on my 1st day back at work for 3 months!

Receiving an email containing this certainly didn't make it any easier

"Whilst we all want your phased return to work to be successful later in February, should this not come to fruition and further long term absence occurs or if you did return to work and then further long term occurred thereafter, then consideration would need to be given to the sustainability of your absence and progression to formal stage 2 of the Long Term Sickness Absence Management procedure a potential outcome of which would be consideration of a recommendation to dismiss on grounds of medical incapability.  "

This is from an Employer that cares about their employees mental health!

Can they do that?

If your in a Union I'd get one of the reps to review it.

I think I'm going to get an HR officer to hear about my experience.  This isn't on at all

I'm not sure they should be sending that, are you in a union? If not, I'd recommend you join one

Definitely  not on mate.

Get this to tribunal and they will sh1t themselves.

Ask about occupational health.

My work sent me there when I was having issues, but it was really to validate I did have a problem which I did.

I feel like sending this in retort.  Have had O/H, and found it very useful.

It makes me feel unwanted, and that, despite its grand overtures, X as an employer doesn't give two figs about my mental health.

I take this opportunity to raise that I have a benefit of employment that allows for 6 months full pay and six months half pay. I will take any attempt by Dorset Council to remove that benefit of employment from me as deliberate breach of contract.

I also take this opportunity to confirm to my management team that I have work related issues impacting my mental health, as produced in the Statement of Fact produced prior to our recent meeting. This should give you opportunity to impact my mental health directly and positively.
