European scenarios

More of a question but IF by some miracle Chelsea and United win the champs league and europa league does it mean 3rd and 4th place do not qualify for champs league? Similarly if Liverpool or United win the europa league does that mean 4th place are bumped?

I have Googled this but can't see a clear answer. Seem to remember this happening to Spurs a while back.

already a thread. We can have 5 teams. Top 4 and Europa winners.

Or top 3 Europa winners and champions league winners. So only danger is 4th place and a Chelsea champions league win.

I think so. The rule changed from when Liverpool won the champions league and finished outside the top four. Thereafter if the scenario were to repeat then one of the places in the top four would go to the winners of the competition to give them a chance to defend their title. Like you mentioned it happened to Spurs and Harry Houdini a few years back and potentially it could happen again.

As I understand it, there are a maximum of five places so the only way the CL places from finishing top 4 will be affected is if teams finishing outside of the top 4 win both the CL and EL, so if Chelsea win the CL and Liverpool / Man Utd (providing they don't finish top 4) win the EL then there would only be 3 teams who qualify through the league.

I think that if a team finishes outside the top 4 and wins the Europa League then no qualifying spots are taken away from the league. Therefore the Prem would be allowed to have 5 clubs. Seem to remember reading this somewhere on here

Bit late to the party there

Is that right though? Surely if one slot each is designated to the champ league winner and europa winner why would that affect the premier league? Even if English teams win both, If 4 slots are designated to the top 3 in the PL and 4th place goes to a qualifier, IF there is a maximum of 5 teams from one nation, they would then be one team short!

If an non top 4 club wins the CL (ie Chelsea) in this case. they take the place of the 4th spot, the max we can have is 5.

Thought I'd weigh in.

There are a maximum of five teams that can qualify from one country. Otherwise, there could be six English teams.

When it comes to England,

-the top three teams enter straight into the group stage

-the fourth place team enters into a two-leg playoff to qualify for the group stage.

If the English teams don't win both the Champions and Europa leagues, that won't matter. If, however, (say) Manchester City wins the Champions League and Tottenham wins the Europa League:

-If one or more of them finish top three, then it doesn't really matter.

-If neither does, then if Manchester City finishes fourth, they and Tottenham will both enter in the playoff route, and the top three will go through.

It won't affect Leicester! ;)

If English clubs finishing outside the top four win both the European competitions (say Chelsea and Liverpool), does the third placed team in the league go into a play-off?

What about the 'fair play' route that West Ham qualified through last season then managed to get just about everyone including the manager sent off in the first few games....

Up the City...

That doesn't cover champions League, that is for a spot in the Europa League.

Liverpool Vs Man U in the Europa League, great news for us as it will be one less non-top-4 team for us to worry about potentially spoiling our Champions League party!

It has no impact on us even if they do, europa is an extra place for the winning country is it not.

Does that mean if Man United win the Europa League and finish 4th 5th place will get in the CL?

It is, but its been discussed at great lengths all over this forum, if english teams win europa league and champions league, but finish outside of 4th, then only the top 3 in the premier league will join them in the champions league next season.

only 5 teams maximum allowed in the champions league per country

If the league from 5th to 20th place finished as it is now and Man Utd/Liverpool won the Europa league and Chelsea won the CL it would mean 4th place doesn't qualify for the CL and 3rd place has to go in a play off for the CL.

We only need to worry if English teams win both competitions and those sides don't finish in the top three of the league.

If only one English side win a European competition it's irrelevant to us so it's really not worth worrying about at this moment in time.

This is correct. Only rule I can't find is the what happens if Spurs win the Europa league. Re does 5th place then qualify.

Would that mean the team in third spot play that Champs league qualifier before the group stages, or do they just go straight into the group pots?

Chelsea aint' winning the champions league so we don't have anything to worry about in regards to that.

and if its true that a 5 teams will go through if an English teams wins the Europa then again nothing to worry about.

Just chill...

Have to say i'm not sure, but i would guess so, as the holders would probably take an automatic spot in the groups. Best finish top 2 to be safe then lol.

more chance of us missing out by finishing 7th than because chelsea win it so it's a non story really
