International Champions Cup

Oh boo hoo. They don't like us.

This tournament will only serve to improve our balance sheet, improve our reputation in America and give us a bit of an insight into how these clubs work. How awful.

It doesn't have to benefit you personally to benefit the club.

What?? I live in america. I get more personal benefit (the chance to watch a live match) from leicester in the tournament than out of it. For the record, I would love Leicester to come play in the United States at some point. This is definitely not about personal benefit and I have no idea why you even bring that into the discussion. I have no problem with you being generally in favour of this tournament - but if that's how your line of thought works, i think it's going to be very difficult to have a rational debate about the merits or demerits of us in the ICC.

A) we're not exactly hurting for money B) there's loads of other ways to make money C) as an American I can assure the ICC doesn't do much for clubs reputations here. The EPL and CL tv coverage does much more for building a fan base than playing reserves in a virtually meaningless friendly. Reputation-wise, the most we can hope to acquire are last season's chelsea fans...and we'll already have them in the bag if we win the title.

This is global exposure we will be getting. People who usually  get in front of the telly to watch Barcelona and PSG will also be watching Leicester City!

Think Jade Goody and her 15 minutes of fame after coming out of the big brother House. She milked it!  :D

Well that's a different discussion altogether, this one is about whether we can consider it a success to be invited and be in such elite company...

No one was talking about flattery.... see above post..

Fair point. But we're already playing in one of the best leagues in the world (on merit) and very likely we'll be playing in the Champions League next season (on merit). So basically we've been invited to attend a fundraiser. I don't want to sound arrogant, but I'm not too impressed with that. Especially when you see some of the riff-raff they've let in through the side door.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could just take this as a positive and a fantastic culmination to an incredible couple of years for this football club?

It's a pre-season tournament that will be a great experience for the players, for any fans attending new and interesting places and will raise profile globally, which helps attract players as well as fans.

We have bitter thread after bitter thread about capitalism & money taking over the game on this forum, even in our greatest season ever. YES I am under 30 and therefore didn't really get to experience "Football before it was ruined" but **** me I still enjoy every second I watch, even the boring games, I love this sport, I wish I could watch it more and that's exactly why i'll continue to be okay with paying for it, and letting it be sponsored and commercialised, because for me at the end of the day there will still be 22 blokes on the pitch providing me with entertaining Football and that's all that matters.

I'm excited to go to Celtic Park as i've always wanted to, I can't wait to hopefully go to Stockholm, it's a great excuse to finally spend a few days there & I bloody wish I was going to LA in August and not October!

Yes that Stiletto bloke is a bell end, of course he is, he's a typical American grease ball billionaire of which thankfully there aren't too many, but he's invited us to play in a great pre season tournament, earn some money and play some incredible games, so for that i'm happy.

lol, its not very often people use jade goody in support of their argument. Not sure I agree with it, but i definitely admire the peculiarity of it.  :D

But to be clear, most of those in favour of involvement with the ICC, is on the basis of it making us money and giving us market exposure. I would contest the actual value of either one that is provided by the ICC (see earlier posts).

As an old-fashioned git, I used to struggle with fans who had a win at all cost mentality, a success on the pitch at all cost mentality. i.e. "we'll sign this player, despite him being a petulant mindless thug, coz he scores loads of goals and that's what you've got to do if you want to win matches and be successful. That's the reality of the modern game, that's what we've got to do."

Now it seems we have this whole new concept (which probably started with United back in the early 00's) to sign up for any tournament or sponsor or owner etc, despite their dubious qualities, because that's what is necessary to make money or to gain market exposure. It used to be the angle businessmen pushed, but now it seems fans have taken it to heart. You're just as likely to hear a fan brag about their new sponsorship deal, or shirt sales in China, as they are about the last trophy they've won.

I think we're all very keen to be a Top 4 club or whatever, results-wise, but  I don't think any of us wants us to adopt their methods or mentality. My fear is that the ICC more closely represents the principles of Football Brands than Football Clubs.

Then again, I'm an old dinosaur and still lament the absence of flat caps and bovril in the modern game.  :revenge:

Ryanair flights to Stockholm are your typical ones to nowhere, Skavsta is in Nyköping about an hours bus ride down the motorway. Norwegian are the best bet, they go to Arlanda, have cheaper extras and free WiFi. From Gatwick though.

Er, our supporters buses aren't quite the same craic as you'd get with those run by Rangers or Celtic supporters clubs to friendlies down here. Ours play bingo instead of getting so tanked they don't remember being in a different country.

lol lol

Basically means nothing then, as Man United finished 3rd last year and Barcelona finished 7th. In terms of football quality anyway.

haa absolutely... that and the joint top scorer hasn't kicked a ball for PSG all season. Just harmless pre season fun.

The funny thing to me is that the people against the ICC would probably be fine with the idea if Stillitano wasn't such a massive cvnt and if we weren't flying thousands of miles for 3 games in 3 different countries but the people currently defending it on the grounds of money and prestige would probably be happily throwing stones at the arrogant big clubs in their shitty little tournament if we weren't invited.

Quite fancy watching City at Parkhead.

I remember a pre-season game at Tannadice years ago - Gary Parker came on tanned and noticeably overweight for us and was holding onto his knees and blowing after 5 minutes...

It'a not a culmination of anything, it's a few pre-season friendlies. The culmination will be the Champions League, when we might play Barca, PSG or whoever in a fixture that actually has some meaning.

Maybe these friendlies will be good preparation for that, who knows? But let's not buy into the marketing crap that the fixtures themselves are in any way important.

Done Stockholm a few years back when Eriksson was in charge. Ridiculous prices for alcohol and food, but a lovely city in the summer with a great harbourfront and cultural scene and I even managed to meet some old friends of mine back from my school days.

Wouldn't want to go back to LA. I don't like the city or region apart from Santa Monica, Venice and Santa Barbara further up northwest. Apart from a few nice places, LA itself is a mess, one huge urban sprawl that sucks you in and spits you out, naked and penniless. :D

Good thing is our game against PSG is likely to be played at the Galaxy's outpost in Carson, further down South. It's a very decent stadium, just oddly placed (built into the ground).

That leaves Glasgow. Eurgh. On a sidenote, I heard it's got lots to offer for a Scottish city. Only been Edinburgh and the Crieff/Stirling area before, so I'm a bit biased.

Keep a close eye on this. If they introduce any kind of formula that gives clubs like Man U or Milan (very rich, once great, now not so great) a bye to the big league stage, while teams that come from nowhere to win their domestic league have to fight it out in the qualifiers, then you know we've been stitched up.

Probably already mentioned but have ticket prices and details been released yet?

To get to stockholm mid week including hotel is about £200 per person if you want to stay in a half decent hotel.
