NewEnglandFox Posted 14 May 2016 Posted 14 May 2016 Napoli back up to second in the table and back in Pot 1 as they're leading Frosinone 1-0. That could mean a potential encounter with Roma in the same group. 2nd is group stages. 3rd is the playoff. Pot 1 is Juve.
MC Prussian Posted 14 May 2016 Posted 14 May 2016 Napoli can't be Pot 1, can they? Juve have already won the Scudetto. My bad, got it mixed up with the Russian league winner.
Jimothy Posted 14 May 2016 Posted 14 May 2016 how do you mix up the Russian champions with the Italian runners up?
MC Prussian Posted 14 May 2016 Posted 14 May 2016 how do you mix up the Russian champions with the Italian runners up? I was on the 2016-2017 Wikipedia page, browsing through the group stage info and both leagues are rather close to on another in the listings.
Jimothy Posted 14 May 2016 Posted 14 May 2016 I was on the 2016-2017 Wikipedia page, browsing through the group stage info and both leagues are rather close to on another in the listings. You can only have one team from a country in pot 1 unless the CL winner is non league winning side. So only Spain can have a second pot 1 team (which they will because neither finalist can with the league), no matter how close someone put the Russian and Italian league on wiki EDIT: So I should add, because Barca won la liga and its an all Madrid CL final, the Ukranian league winners will miss out on pot 1.
MC Prussian Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 Club Bruges have their Champions League group stage ticket pretty much booked - thumped immediate rivals RSC Anderlecht 4-0 today and are now six points clear with a far superior goal difference of +14 and only two more matches to be played. And Besiktas have sealed the Süper Lig title after beating Osmanlispor 3-1 at home.
The Doctor Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 how do you mix up the Russian champions with the Italian runners up? Not to mention teams from the same country can't meet in the group, so even if Napoli were pot 1, they couldn't be in the same group as Roma
Guest Bilo Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 Pot 1 confirmed apart from CL and Russian league winners. Real/Atletico (Champions League) Barcelona (Spain) Leicester City (England) Bayern Munich (Germany) Juventus (Italy) PSG (France) Benfica (Portugal) CSKA/Rostov (Russia) Pot 2 could be interesting as well - looking at current coefficients. Real (175.028) or Atletico (143.028) Borussia Dortmund (110.035) Arsenal (105.256) Manchester City (99.256) Porto (if they come through play-off) (92.616) Napoli (90.087) Bayer Leverkusen (89.035) Basel (87.755) Obviously we can't meet Arsenal or Manchester City at the group stage, which leaves us with around a 50/50 of a real tough Pot 2 draw (Real/Atletico, Dortmund or Napoli) or a slightly kinder but still fairly difficult one (Porto, Bayer Leverkusen or Basel)
Wymsey Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 Would anyone sacrifice just scraping relegation next season for doing excellent in the CL?
Izzy Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 The more I think about it, the more I don't fear anyone in the CL. I think we set up perfectly to take on the best in Europe. If we can keep our best players and make a few additions, I reckon we've got a great chance of progressing through the group stages - whoever we face. I dunno about you lot, but I'd happily sacrifice a top 4 finish next season for a decent run in the Champions League. I hope me make it our number 1 priority next season because we may never have the chance again...
Izzy Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 Would anyone sacrifice just scraping relegation next season for doing excellent in the CL? Not sure about 'scraping relegation' because I think we'll still be top 10 regardless. But I'd definitely sacrifice Top 6 for having a right good crack at the CL. It's a no lose situation. What a Brucie Bonus for us, and how fvckin exciting to look forward to!
Guest Bilo Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 I'd actually quite like to get Roma. Rome is one of the world's great cities and one would hope we'd have earned a modicum of good will via the Ranieri connection, moderately reducing the risk of being stabbed in the arse. I think they'd be the more beatable of the two Italian teams on offer as well.

Guest Bilo Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 Right now, a good group for me would be: Leicester City Basel Roma BATE Borisov A reasonably winnable Pot 2 draw and pleasant trip to Switzerland, a trip to one of the world's great and iconic cities and the obligatory tricky tour to Eastern Europe.
katieakita Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 If you were the best team in the league this year but only finished 3rd do you get dumped in pot 3 or 4?
st albans fox Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 If you were the best team in the league this year but only finished 3rd do you get dumped in pot 3 or 4? Imagine they get a group with barca and Dortmund !

Guest Bilo Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 Imagine they get a group with barca and Dortmund ! Which is why winning the league was vital for us. Our co-efficient is basically zero as we haven't played in Europe for 15 years, so we'd have been dumped in Pot 4 alongside the likes of Astana, IFK Norrkoping and Hapoel Be'er Sheva had we finished second. Not only do we now avoid the likes of Barcelona and Bayern, we also get the chance to play a side in Pot 4. It's a bit of a lucky dip as there are also sides who are strong but just haven't played in Europe, but there are plenty of also rans in there as well.

I know what you're saying and I don't for one second think you prioritise CL qualification over trophies, but there is so much wrong with this sentence it hurts.

I think you get 20% of your country's coefficient. So with England on about 75 we'd be on 15, which I don't think would get us out of pot 4, but it might depend on who else qualified. I imagine 15 is a pretty high coefficient for a team of our European standing.
Guest Bilo Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 According to UEFA coefficients, the worst case scenario for Chelsea this season would have been: Chelsea Real Madrid Shakhtar Donetsk BATE Borisov I imagine for us, it'd be something like: Leicester City Borussia Dortmund Villarreal BATE Borisov I know what you're saying and I don't for one second think you prioritise CL qualification over trophies, but there is so much wrong with this sentence it hurts. I meant in terms of CL progression. Getting out of the group would have been far, far harder had we finished second. Winning the league was obviously unbelievably special for more reasons than that - I'm just talking in context of the thread.
