Captain... Posted 13 April 2016 Posted 13 April 2016 What happens if liverpool and man city both win their cups and qualify for the champions league next year. Nothing directly (assuming we finish top 2) except if we have 5 English teams in the CL group stage we lose around £20m from the market pool money. Do Europa league winners go through qualifying or qualify automatically for group stage?
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 13 April 2016 Posted 13 April 2016 Meant to start a thread about something similar to this but does everyone reckon this will make us significantly bigger as a club or does it depend (in your opinion) on consistent qualification of the CL season on season? Just interested in what people think on this... For me, obviously we're definitely heading in the right direction as a club, and I'm hoping we can contiune to develop well each season with the foundations we currently have in place. The opportunity for our growth is ideal given what we already have in every aspect of the club.

The opportunity for our growth is ideal given what we already have in every aspect of the club. It will make us significantly richer, but qualifying for the CL once will not make us a significantly bigger club, there are a lot of small clubs in the CL and I do think players will still be more attracted to united and the Europa League and Chelsea with no European competitions than Leicester and the possibility of being thrashed in Europe and dragged back to "where we belong" next season (how they will see it, not my opinion). To become a significantly bigger club we need to consolidate ourselves in the upper echelons of the PL and repeatedly qualify for Europe.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 13 April 2016 Posted 13 April 2016 Dream group would be Celtic (closest away day) Barca (nice to have a big team) Anderlecht (rocking atmosphere and wasilewski connections) Also wouldnt mind olympiakos Celtic?! Leicester City comes around how often and you want one of the three away trips to do in Scotland?! What. Why would we not care about progressing?! Sure, 3rd and progressing (probably) further in the Europa League wouldn't be bad, but give me 2nd and a chance to get into the quarter finals any day... Not not care as in not try to or want to progress but ultimately if we get knocked out of the Champions League then are any of us going to complain?! What I meant was I'd rather have a dream group in terms of away trips which sees us go out and into the Europa than a boring group from which we progress and have one decent knockout tie thereafter. I can just see us being the first ever English club with a 'que sera' attitude to the whole thing.
ARTY_FOX Posted 13 April 2016 Posted 13 April 2016 I get what you mean. We're just going to enjoy the experience regardless of what happens. I agree really. I'll just be happy to say I've seen them in the champions league tbh
Dan Posted 13 April 2016 Posted 13 April 2016 I have done a projected qualifers and the pots - anyway of uploading a spreadsheet on here? I have picked out Barcelona and Dortmund as the winners of the European competitions. I also used the UEFA team rankings as how to calculate the qualifiers in the Runners-Up category and used my own opinion for the Champions category. Pot 1: Barcelona, Leicester City, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris St Germain, Benfica, CSKA Moscow & Ajax Pot 2: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Manchester City, FC Porto, Napoli & Bayer Leverkusen Pot 3: FC Basel, Shakhtar Donetsk, Tottenham Hotspur, Olympiakos, Dynamo Kiev, Lyon, Villarreal & PSV Eindhoven Pot 4: Sporting Lisbon, Club Brugge, Besiktas, Red Bull Salzburg, BATE Borisov, FC Copenhague, Red Star Belgrade and Hertha Berlin. all that effort and it's void already On the subject though... I'd want Napoli, PSV and Hertha. I want one with a bit of needle.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 13 April 2016 Posted 13 April 2016 Would love us to draw a German team, fancy an away trip to German if i can convice the boss to let me head over again and if i could snag a ticket
bovril Posted 13 April 2016 Posted 13 April 2016 all that effort and it's void already On the subject though... I'd want Napoli, PSV and Hertha. I want one with a bit of needle. Few beers and a joint will do me.
Manwell Pablo Posted 14 April 2016 Posted 14 April 2016 all that effort and it's void already On the subject though... I'd want Napoli, PSV and Hertha. I want one with a bit of needle. Eindhovens pretty boring tbh. Stadium lacks atmosphere and there ain't that much to the city. Berlin on the other hand is fantastic.
EnglishOxide Posted 14 April 2016 Posted 14 April 2016 I've got a feeling we will do well in the CL. Ranieri has the know how. And our style is quite similar to Atletico Madrid who have been impressive in recent years.
SpinneyHillRanger Posted 14 April 2016 Posted 14 April 2016 Atletico to win la liga... then barcelona will be pot 2?
joshljones98 Posted 14 April 2016 Posted 14 April 2016 My ideal group would be: Bayer Leverkusen FC Basel FC Copenhagen All winnable and gives us the best chance of progressing!
CosbehFox Posted 14 April 2016 Posted 14 April 2016 all that effort and it's void already On the subject though... I'd want Napoli, PSV and Hertha. I want one with a bit of needle. Bayern can win it then, doesn't change anything.
Bluearmyfox28 Posted 14 April 2016 Posted 14 April 2016 I want Ajax in our group. Perfect away day & a week in Amsterdam.
davieG Posted 14 April 2016 Posted 14 April 2016 Man City and Liverpool have helped tighten Premier League's grip on fourth Champions League spot By Gerard BrandLast Updated: 14/04/16 2:46pm Manchester City have reached the last four of the Champions League Manchester City and Liverpool's success in Europe means England have a tighter grip on the fourth Champions League spot for the 2018/19 campaign. Their fourth-place spot, based on UEFA association coefficients, was in danger of being lost for the 2017/18 season before Juventus' Champions League round-of-16 exit at the hands of Bayern Munich last month, but that has been secured. A poor performance in Europe next season could still be detrimental for the 2018/19 season if Italian sides are successful, but the gap over Italy has been stretched in recent months. Liverpool face Dortmund on Thursday for a place in the Europa League semi-final In December, after Manchester United's exit from the Champions League at the group stage, England's overall lead over Italy was just 3.054. But that lead has now been stretched to 4.845 following Manchester City and Liverpool's progress in Europe, as well as Juventus and Lazio's exit at the round of 16 stage of the Champions League and Europa League respectively. European League - Current coefficient standings COUNTRY 11/12 12/13 13/14 14/15 15/16 TOTAL Spain 20.857 17.714 23.000 20.214 20.071 101.856 Germany 15.250 17.928 14.714 15.857 15.857 79.606 England 15.250 16.428 16.785 13.571 13.250 75.284 Italy 11.357 14.416 14.166 19.000 11.500 70.439 All eyes turn to Liverpool on Thursday night as they look to further strengthen their hold over Italy, who cannot gain any more points in Europe this season. They host Dortmund in the Europa League last eight, with the scores at 1-1 from the first leg. The coefficient is calculated by working out an average score for the country, which is gained by dividing the number of 'points' obtained by the total number of clubs representing a country. England have eight clubs this season; Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Southampton and West Ham. England's fourth Champions League spot for the 2017/18 season was secured when Juventus were knocked out by Bayern last month That resulting number is then added to the results of the previous four seasons to calculate the coefficient, making a five-year run. The total of those five years is the decisive number, with England's currently standing at 75.284 and Italy's at 70.439 (4.845 difference). How do you gain 'points'? Each team gets two points for a win in either European competition and one point for a draw, though points are halved for matches in the qualifying and play-off rounds. Clubs that reach the last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final of the Champions League, or the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final of the Europa League, are awarded an extra point for each round. In addition, four points are awarded for participation in the group stage of the Champions League and four points for qualifying for the last 16. The total amount of points a country gains is then divided by the number of clubs representing that country. Italy will claw back 3.893 points on England when the 2011/12 season is knocked off the run of five seasons in the summer, which on present standings would reduce England's lead to 0.952 at the kick-off of the 2016/17 season. For England to lose fourth spot in the 2018/19 season, Italian teams would have to out-perform the English by 0.952 points, which has happened only once since 2002/03.
FoxFossil Posted 14 April 2016 Posted 14 April 2016 It will make us significantly richer, but qualifying for the CL once will not make us a significantly bigger club, there are a lot of small clubs in the CL and I do think players will still be more attracted to united and the Europa League and Chelsea with no European competitions than Leicester and the possibility of being thrashed in Europe and dragged back to "where we belong" next season (how they will see it, not my opinion). To become a significantly bigger club we need to consolidate ourselves in the upper echelons of the PL and repeatedly qualify for Europe. Truer word never spoken. However CL this year does mean extra revenue that reduces the cost risk and therefore most probably will bring forward the club development plans, such as stadium expension by a year or so. Owners are prudent and shrewed: Business development will go hand in hand with 'slowly, slowly' on pitch development but I bet the Plan is being revised as we speak, to reflect CL status and income, as this is only sound business planning. So I predict a stadium announcement once top 2 place confirmed, which will make us in a very real sense..'A bigger club'.
lcfcfoz Posted 14 April 2016 Posted 14 April 2016 Anyone booked a hotel yet, final at the Principality Stadium Cardiff
CosbehFox Posted 15 April 2016 Posted 15 April 2016 Bayern can win it then, doesn't change anything. Only cursed Dortmund too
C-man Posted 15 April 2016 Posted 15 April 2016 Only cursed Dortmund too Ultimately doesn't matter to your workings as EL winner doesn't get Pot 1? I went to Anfield last night and their fans all want us next season, although they aren't happy with the 1,600 allocation - 'how easy is it to sneak 2 people through the turnstiles in one go?!'
Dan Posted 15 April 2016 Posted 15 April 2016 Is it true that you can dodge the VISA issue if you go through Sweden? That makes me sort of want Zenit. You can get a ferry there from Stockholm.

isaidno Posted 15 April 2016 Posted 15 April 2016 Yes. 13-14 September 27-28 September 18-19 October 1-2 November 22-23 November 6-7 December I'm away in Budapest for the first match so would love it if we drew Ferencvaros. Would cry if we got one of the big teams at home
