England v Iceland

I've been trying to work out why he was so prolific for Spurs last season yet so poor for England.

I think that despite the large number of Spurs players in the side, England played in an un-Spurs-like way. No counter attacking as a team, a lack of quality ball from the midfield.

We were more like Man Utd, tapping it around in areas that did no harm.

Kane was reduced, as we all saw, to being ball greedy, most of it outside the box.

Spurs have Lamela and Eriksen setting him up to score offside tap ins all season.

Kane was such a mystery to me this tournament. He was clearly either physically or mentally exhausted. You have 3 senior coaches training these players and I just do not understand why he was persisted with throughout the tournament. As for the frankly baffling and beyond comprehension idea of having him on set pieces. His delivery is abysmal, It says an awful lot about the weak willed players we have in the tournament that no one spoke up against that decision.

I still can't quite believe how bad we were. You have bad performances occasionally but there so many simple things that we couldn't do, there was a time in the second half when about 6 successive simple passes were mis-controlled.

Just heard Rooney saying that the best team don't always win! **** off you arrogant ****! The best team did win!

Rooney needs to go. There can't have been many less celebrated record-breaking goalscorers for their country anywhere. Even Beckham was more useful at his lowest ebb than Rooney was yesterday.

They need some serious mental coaching at international level. Someone should smash those imaginations these players have of themselves and England as a major footballing nation.

It really is saying something when the team I was rooting against, who performed much like I expected them to and whom I have no allegiances to (apart from following a club side located there) can rile me up. In fact, I'd better stop altogether before someone accuses me of weirdly obsessing about it.

Sat at Narborough station waiting for the train to Birmingham. Still wondering how the Hell Hodgson could take that bunch of players and make them play so badly.

Also wondering whether the players themselves are really that bothered?

Sad day to be an England football fan.

Narborough? Are you one of us?

Woke up this morning and still struggling to fully appreciate the scale of this. I knew we were bad but that was almost unforgivable.

So much is wrong with the mentality in this country. First thing I read yesterday was some lad sneering at our fans for saying Albrighton should've been in the squad. That is to a tee the snobbery we've embraced. England aren't too good for Albrighton, they aren't too good for Carroll, or Noble, or Antonio, or Shawcross, or Dann - the list goes on and on. We have got to seriously sit back and accept what we are now, and that is a side with serious technical, mental and tactical deficiency.

Maybe he's right if a side is absolutely robbed late on by a referee or something, not when they're completely clueless as to how to break down a country the size of Leicester, managed by a part-time dentist.

This utter pathetic failure to stand up to this is a major, major issue. When will we stop kidding ourselves? We'd be mocking the Welsh if they'd exited as pathetically as that last night and they're a side largely made up of players who are only there because they can't get near England's side. This is how pitifully poor we are now.

Rooney has got to go now. This is one failure too many. He's finished and I'm worried he doesn't realise it.

Rooney has always been the problem. He's just a foul mouthed yob. not a captain or leader. Remember when we beat man utd 5-3, i thought he was going to start whacking his own players. No-one follows or listens to a nutter yelling at them.

It's all about mentality...siege mentality, and no fear. To be fair the last 2 tournaments the media have not made England ouf to be world beaters. No pressure and they still fook up. There's something proper wrong I'm afraid

You're having a laugh. How many times I've read "England could go all the way here" based on nothing other than hype I've no idea.

Last night was just weird. By about 80 minutes I'd not only given up but I actually didn't want them to equalise. They deserved everything they got. It would've been an absolute travesty if we'd progressed last night.

He's been a level above most of our team which means we must treat him like some god-like figure, even neglecting title winning players just to shoehorn him out of position. This tournament was absolutely peak England at their worst. Everything about it an absolute joke from the squad selection to the scarcely believable lack of imagination displayed throughout pretty much every game.

Genuinely think Kane's performances might have been the worst of any player at the tournament.

You'd be hard pressed to give him above a 3/10 in any game he played in

I was thinking about it and cannot think of anyone worse. Indefensibly bad and needs knocking down a peg or ten, as does Alli, as does Hart, as does Wilshere.

Sky like to tell us the PL is the best in the world when it's not. We have some wonderful players in the league - Ozil, Sanchez, Eriksen etc - but the English players aren't on the same level.

I look at Bayern Munich and the spine of their team is German. Barcelona's spine is Spanish. You look at our big clubs and they're just made up of quality foreign players.

The top players in our league are Real Madrid & Barcelona cast-offs. The genuine stars of our league end up at those two.

I can only think of Heskey in 2010 being worse than Kane, but you can let him off a bit. Kane was clearly the posterboy, the person Hodgson wanted to be his Luis Suarez and he was even worse than when he played for us. He should retire after those performances.

The reality is the best players at Tottenham aren't English.

Simple.

I think Alli does show promise, even if he was absolutely dreadful. Dier definitely confirmed he's only good with Dembele looking out for him. Rose was probably the only one who was good out of the Spurs mould Hodgson built around.

conte "we showed that an idea can beat talent"

roy "systems don't matter"

nice

Even Conte calling up and playing a player like Giaccherini, who has merely played a bit-part for Sunderland over the past few seasons, shows that picking players you trust that fit into a system is the most important thing.

Totally agree.

I love watching Ozil and Sanchez, top players, but they're players that were sold by Barca and Madrid.
