We did that against Slovakia, you donut.

Err, no we didnt.

We went sideways sideways backwards, sideways sideways run out of ideas or shoot harmlessly from 25 yards.

You are right we did have three chances that we should have scored still, but overall especially in the second half we ran out of ideas.

Fury injured , so if he wants to go out and support his country and buy the fans drinks. He's a bad guy ? The man is world heavyweight champion, little bit more respect for the English warrior please.

I think his problem is he doesn't have a real Fan base in all seriousness. The Irish don't want him and neither do the English, why I think he's so outspoken and a nob. Just to stay in the news so people talk about him.

I read before he tried to fight for Ireland at the olympics but they couldn't even get a direct link to him being Irish !! He's a good boxer aswell just let himself down with being a massive tool.

Rumours (which seem to be correct going on the previous team leaks) are that Sterling will start tonight?!

I mean really? I could swear he's one bad game away from being 'Beckhamed' à la France 98!

Very brave/stupid decision from Roy?

Posted

This exactly, we don't have a player who can cause trouble in the box by bossing the defenders or a player who can provide a cross... because Roy left them at home.

The squad has no real balance to it. Hodgson's built it around trying to play one way and that way is yet again not really working.

Andy Carroll is a victim of this football snobbery which has polluted the minds of people in this country. We think we're too good to have players like him and we've displayed that we quite clearly aren't.

I said on the day he announced the squad he'd created problems for himself and I'm inclined to think I was right.

Inclined to go with stupid, could pay off but probably won't. He's been appalling so far but as previously stated we lack players even in the squad who can play his position so he's often going to be called upon.

Knowing Hodgson he'll put him in for Lallana after he had one of his best games in an England shirt.

Isn't Lallana injured anyway?

Think he's back but might not be 100% hence Sterling having to come in. Shocking we only have 2 options. Stunning from Roy again on dropping Vardy. Let's hope he can have an impact from the bench.

Have you seen the team? Is Vardy definitely been benched? Who for?

If the press are correct which they have been for every game for England then Vardy and Lallana are out and Kane and Sterling are in up top with Sturridge.

Exactly right. The England set up is fundamentally flawed, and it needs scrapping and starting again ASAP. I want to see an England manager find the best system for the players he's got, instead of shoehorning the biggest names and the players from the biggest clubs into something that doesn't suit them.

I think England's current strength is it's set of forwards. I would build the team around them. I'd use 2 of them, and try to get as many goals out of them as possible since the defence isn't great. The weakest area is wingers, so I might think about having 3 at the back and using wing backs.

My first XI might be something like this:

                    Forster

        Stones   Cahill   Smalling

Walker                                   Albrighton

            Drinkwater     Dier

                     Rooney

                Kane    Vardy

It might be a bit old-fashioned, but I think it would get results. The biggest problem is the lack of decent centre-halves, but this way, we're using 2 strikers, 3 central midfielders and there's no room for Sterling.

I would have Carroll in the squad. He can be one of the best in the world at what he does. I wouldn't try to dominate possession for the whole match. I'd try to hustle the opposition into thinking they were making progress and hit them on the break to get the most out of Vardy.

What makes it all extra annoying is that the season just gone should have taught everyone some valuable lessons. You don't need big names. You don't need possession. Team spirit and a formation and style that fits the players can beat everyone else by miles.

Hodgson's built a side as close to a Spurs one he could, whereas a Leicester one would probably do a lot better. I'm probably letting bias cloud my judgement, but the more I think about it, the more sure I am of that. Apart from the fact that Leicester beat Spurs by 11 points, and that we're clearly mentally stronger than they are, there's the glaring truth that we're trying to keep the ball at all costs when we don't have the talent for it. All it's done for us is good possession stats and built packed defences to try and fail to break down.

If we took on the traditional role of the underdog, we could have a very good counter-attacking team on our hands. The way we're going, we're going to fall flat on our faces the moment we come up against any side that does what we're trying to do better than us. There are plenty of them. We've only scraped by so far in an easy group because we have delusions of grandeur. If Hodgson had any sense, he'd recognise that we haven't got the players to rely on single goal leads. He would be better served by throwing caution to the wind, but he hasn't got the brains or balls required to do that.

I definitely can't see us getting past a Spain/Germany/France/Italy, and I think we'll struggle yet again to break down the lesser sides. Won't be surprised to see us go out on pens tonight after a 0-0 AET.

From the BBC, my comments in bold:

"Roy Hodgson should know what to expect when his team play Iceland - after all they have been unchanged for all three of their games in France." - Like Leicester were last season

"They have averaged 29% possession so far, attempted the lowest number of dribbles in the group stage, made the second-lowest number of successful passes and had the joint second-lowest numbers of shots." - Sounds familiar

"It all hints at Hodgson's side facing another test against a defensively-orientated side. England's ability to carve open an opponent faces a significant examination; their supposedly suspect defence will perhaps be under less pressure." - dont underestimate them, just because they don't have possession and do not shoot much, they might be much more effective... like a certain team last season

That said, captain Aron Gunnarsson will look to launch balls into the England box with long throws whenever possible - meaning that some test of England's defending in aerial battles can be expected.

"Iceland play a rigid 4-4-2. They are physical and well-organised and have enough craft to slow the game down." - 4-4-2 is so old fashioned. 'Class' is much more important that being physical and organised.

When will people look at what we did last year and realise it wins games?

It's like Roy is home sick and wants to leave France as quickly as he can.

If Sterling and Kane come back in, then we are back to the original problem we had against Wales. Neither are even close to any sort of form.
