Saying "Look" before every answer

Recommended Posts

So many people in the media, in particular in sport say "Look..." ahead of their answer... I first noticed it with the coach of the Tigers saying it after being asked questions by Radio Leicester and it has spread like wildfire across sport

it's as if people get coached to answer questions a certain way and the first thing you MUST do is say 'Look" at the start of every answer.

It gives the impression that they want everyone to stop and the notice of what they're about to say, very rude in my opinion and if I was asking the question I would quickly say "What?" immediately after they said it to pi$$ them off

I hate this with a passion.

it took all my energy not to type "look" at the start of this post as a witty response, but I never will.

Tigers coach always says it, as does john Terry and Shane Warne

Theyre just trying to be affirmative and have either thought it through personally as a way of handling media arrangements or have picked it up naturally and just say it out of frustration. Its just one of them things, like how alot of people exclaim 'a pleasure', at the end of conversations.

Shouldve put this into the 'What Grinds my Gears' topic, its pissing me off far more that so many people are using 'smart' the Americanized way, its everywhere at the moment

GRRRR

Look, there is no point getting angry at me, if you open thread titled "Saying "Look" before every answer ", you  have to expect some smart arse to reply with "Look..."

Aussie sportsmen use "Yeah, look" a lot. Usually followed by "England were better than us and deserve to win the Ashes, mate".

Wow. Possibily THE most ridiculous thing I have ever seen moaned about on here. Who gives a ****? And more the point, why do you?

do you get annoyed when Ranieri interrupts journalists during a question or starts off most answers with 'no' despite not actually meaning 'no'...?

I first noticed Tony Blair using this all the time and shortly after that most politicians. It's a sign of herd mentality. It's nearly as annoying as Rooney saying..er in between every other word. i.e. er...I'm going to...er...retire...er after the...er next world...cup er...despite...er everyone...er wishing I'd...er fook off...er immediately.

Former Tigers coach Pat "Look" Howard used to do it all the time. Really annoying. Richard Cockerill does it too.

"Listen", is just as bad. Effectively either is saying, "I'm about to say something extremely important and you damn well better be paying attention!"

Listen; I cannot believe that we have a linguistics thread. That is my last comment on the subject. End of. Full stop.
