Badly missing Mahrez

Some subtle but excellently delivered criticism of Mahrez by Ranieri in following article: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/sep/14/claudio-ranieri-champions-league-riyad-mahrez-leicester

"Maybe Mahrez is tired of dilly ding, dilly dong".

'Ranieri said afterwards that he had wanted Islam Slimani, the club-record signing who made his Leicester debut, to take the spot‑kick against Brugge. But Mahrez stepped forward. “If he hadn’t scored I’d take his neck and crush his neck!” Ranieri said. “He took the responsibility. I tried to say Slimani because he’s a penalty scorer. But he took the responsibility and scored. He was a lucky man!”

IMO Mahrez has no right taking that kick if Slimani was the designated kicker. He might have scored but it was not a good penalty. He only seems to have two predictable penalty kicks in his repertoire. The one with the halting run up into the same corner each time and the one down the middle. It is no accident most get saved.

Pretty sure Ranieri has said in the past that it's not up to him. The players discuss it on the pitch and whoever feels most up for it will take it.

What a load of shit. There was nothing wrong with his penalty last night. He may have missed a few of his last ones but he is still obviously the kick taker. I can't believe you're picking fault with the guy who heavily contributed to our first champions league victory.

Aside from the free kick, I don't think he played as well as we saw last year, can't remember seeing him take any players on yesterday. Hopefully he can push on now against Burnley.

He's only picking fault with his pens which to be fair I'm with him on.

He does seem to either try and roll it into the same corner (numerous attempts at this have been saved) or stutter his run up in order to try and work out which way the keeper is going to dive, I'd disagree with the statement it was a poor penalty as a good penalty is generally speaking one that hits the back of the net. He stuttered his run up perfectly worked out what the keeper was going to do and knew putting it down the middle would get him a goal, job done. Nothing wrong with last nights effort.

The problem when he does that is if he can't get a read on what he thinks the goalkeeper is going to do he panics, has no idea where he is putting it, and ends up taking thoughtless and often very savable penalties. That's why he's missed a fair amount during his time here.

i read that ranieri was "trying to get slimani to take it" but riyad ignored everyone. dunno tho. doesn't really matter if he scores just seemed weird that the manager basically said riyad chose to take it and there's nothing anyone can do about that except shout at him if he misses.

A half decent keeper would easily of saved that peno.

And whats all this about? http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37365142

Surely the alleged 100k per week is motivation enough?

Turning into a spoilt brat.

I think it's quite clear Mahrez thrives on confindence, I think it's lucky he didn't go to a "bigger club" as I fear he would've got swallowed up if he didn't get off to a good start.

Maybe Riyad was trying to protect Slim from the responsibility of missing, as he only got off the plane on friday!

It looks like Slim will get his chance to do the job, at some point.

Riyad definitely has an ego, but I think it's in check. It's what makes him the special player that he is, he has the audacity to try things that others won't and it comes off pretty often. He also won't forgo the team spirit, he graciously gave Vardy his penalty when on his run last year and yesterday he appeared to be having a great time with Vardy on the bench. This was very encouraging for me as at times last year when I felt he and Vadry were battling for the sole superstar status in the team. The truth is that they are both class and need each other. They are the Del Boy and Rodney that LCFC need for success which is even more evident now that Granpa (Kante) has moved on!

For this reason I feel like Riyad can sometimes get away with being our luxury player. Even last year there were plenty of games where he was largely coasting and ineffective and then BAM, would do something amazing like the goal versus Watford.

For me, he's the type of player I though I would never see at the club. A world class flair player, who has committed to our club and even got his not too shabby Algerian mate to join us too. He'll have bad games and he'll have games where he looks like a Barcelona forward. He's that type of player.

Mahrez is and will forever be a legend to me!

Bloke behind me at Anfield was saying they would have sold him for £5m let alone £50m on Saturday. Hope he's realising what a fickle cvnt he is this morning.

Daft twat.

I personally love that Mahrez wanted to take that penalty. It would have been easier for him to step aside and let someone else take it after missing against Swansea, but he had the confidence to do it. I still hate the stutter step approach though.

Not sure what you find amusing but that peno was weak as, yeh it was scored so all good but a prem keeper would easily have saved it.

Whether CR's comments are tongue in cheek about motivation its interesting how Mahrez suddenly finds form in the biggest match of our history in front of the cameras.

Love that so much!

As far Mahrez's pen, my guess is that he knows he's taken some bad ones and wanted to prove himself and re-establish himself as the club's penalty taker. Whether it works or not is another matter, but you can't fault him for having the bollocks to take a pen considering how many he's missed of late.

A PL league keeper didn't save the exact similar penalty taken by RM26.79999 at the beginning of the year.

Ranieri probably wanted Slimani to get off the mark early.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Slimani take the next one.

..Mahrez stepped in...Mahrez will always step in..he is a player playing with absolutely no pressure on his shoulder...

He is inside his successful bubble living his passion.

I don't mind who takes the penalties as long as they are confident doing so, if mahrez wants to keep taking them I have no problem with that as long as they are good penalties and he always hits the target and doesn't showboat doing it. He is our gem in the team and still needs managing in the right way. Claudio needs to know when to take the pressure off him and let him play his natural game. We need to keep him Hungary and motivated and be willing to keep learning.he is already an exceptional player but can he take it to the next level on a par with the worlds best
