Guest Chocolate Teapot Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 One slight concern from me is the lack of goals from open play this year: Hull - Penalty Arsenal - No goals Swansea - One from open play, one corner Liverpool - mistake by their player Bruge - one throw, one fk, one pen It doesn't look like we're creating as many chances, in the second half against bruges and Liverpool there were a few, but it's going to be tough to break Burnley down and we can't keep relying on set pieces. On a positive though we appear to look much more threatening from set pieces this year.
Wilson_6 Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 Would like to see us really go at Burnley from the Kick off and get an early goal that will totally change the match.
pleatout Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 I think you misunderstand the term "open play". Penalty and free kick yep I with you. Corner - unless it goes straight in it is open play. smae with throw-in. How far back are you going to go in the game?
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 Agreed, we're really lacking fluidity and the great wall of Burnley will be difficult to breach without some sort of cohesion. Hope we can get at them like last season or we do risk an 0-0 or even 0-1 smash and grab reverse.
sylofox Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 I don't get the problem. A goal is a goal and we are making chances just don't seem to have that little bit of luck atm. I personally don't care if we beat Burnley 1-0 and it goes in off the refs left arse cheek. All the record books will say we won 1-0. And we will have 3pts and yes penalties do count.

The free kick and penno at Brugge were a result of them hacking down Vardy when he was probably about to score from open play though to be fair.

Clever Fox Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 Goals are Goals at the end of the Day but how they're scored does demonstrate if we have a problem or not. Tight defences and no support in and around the Box is exactly why we need a quality creative midfielder in the David Silva mould. Slimani will definitely help in this area as demonstrated on Wednesday. It's a very important position and so a proven quality player is required. He can take it from defenders and slip it in to spaces for Attackers. This is why the great Teams always find a way to score. As for the Goals themselves no it doesn't matter how there scored as it's the result that counts.
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 I get what you're saying. I'm confident with the options we've got though we are more than capable of scoring goals from open play. We will in time, but as you've pointed out it's just the way it's gone in the games so far. I'm happy with any goals we score.

It's clear what he's getting at, the ball was in that position because of a set piece and not a passing move. I agree with him, we need to start passing it around and making opportunities a bit more. If we want to progress and keep near the top we need to add a bit more to our style than relying on counters and set pieces.
AKCJ Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 Remember the times when we couldn't score a set piece for love nor money?

Exactly, last year we were counter attack specialists but we also managed to score and win games when teams camped back, we had an excellent home record vs lower half teams. You can't break very much in these games and pace is negated to an extent, trickery and quick accurate passing are needed instead
Izzy Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 One slight concern from me is the amount of slight concern people are showing this early in the season. If we're in the bottom three by Xmas and out of Europe then I might be slightly concerned. But we won't be, so I won't be.
Will1981 Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 it quite hard to score from open play when every time Vardy gets clean though on goal some scumbag hacks him down and then the ref bottles out of giving the red card.
Guest Chocolate Teapot Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 I think some people see what I'm getting at, and no I'm not moaning we've started scoring from corners and set pieces.... It's a small concern that we are not creating the chances that maybe we were last year and this has resulted in less goals from open play. It's an observation that we're not opening up teams like we did last year, hopefully that changes at Burnley.....if Mahrez is back to his best then this will change massively.
Basingstoke Fox Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 We should've scored more than one from open play against Swansea. Yes I know should is the word here but still. I'm hopeful we can get one or two tomorrow.
Al-aLondon-Foxile Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 I feel sure we would have scored at least once more against Swansea if the weather hadn't spoiled the pitch, and it is early days to worry too much. It's too soon to really look at stats as a fair reflection, but i agree there is potentially a trend.
StanSP Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 'mistake by Liverpool player' Just cos that happened doesn't discount that it was from open play
Wymsey Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 As long as the inside nets gets touched a few times by a ball by a blue-shirted player within 90 mins, don't give a fudge whether it's via open play or not.
Ric Flair Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 How many easy chances have we missed from open play though? We are still creating a decent amount. Vardy missed 2 sitters vs Hull, Fuchs missed a great chance and Drinkwater had a great effort. Against Arsenal Vardy missed another glorious one on one, Mahrez had a couple of efforts too but that was a game of few chances on either side. Swansea we had a hatful of chances and Liverpool was absolute dross. I'm not worried yet. Slimani coming in and Albrighton and Mahrez returning to form will help this massively. Unless scoring headers from crosses isn't good enough.

Thracian Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 it's concerned me because Vardy and Mahrez are our only likely scorers from our starting eleven and even when we do get forward in numbers that means there's only a limited numerical threat. I was pleased Albrighton scored in Bruges and to see Drinky having a couple of half-decent pops at goal but neither are marksmen and , really, the absence of either Schlupp or Gray - themselves not natural scorers but well capable of disturbing defences - and our not getting big numbers forward when we attack, means we're heavily dependent on our big two plus Slimani, Ulloa or whoever comes on as a replacement up front. It all makes it remarkable how anything's achieved but long may it continue.
