I'm sorry the guy is too rash and doesn't judge any situation well. Last season he barely played but gave us yet another scare after his complete stupidity against Arsenal... Legend is probably the wrong term, cult hero is probably more appropriate. Had his fair share of decent performances and has shone on a few occasions during his time here, but will people will probably think more fondly of the character rather than the player. You can't help but like the man, the look on his face when he walked was one of someone who was genuinely mortified he'd let his fellow players and fans down and that's the kind of attitude he's had since day one. As for the foul yes it was daft and it's been coming for some time the way he throws his arms about, but if you're going to get sent off you may as well nail Diego Costa in the face in the process. He struggled last night, he was clumsy and was lucky not to give a penalty away, but let's remember he's 36 well past his best and a squad player to be used when needed, Hernandez should be the obvious choice for a fill in CB if required. Possibly Benny but it's been that long since I saw him play it's hard to compare the two.
GazzinderFox Posted 21 September 2016 Posted 21 September 2016 I'm looking forward to watching him in the WWE when he retires from playing at the end of the season...

Nailed it! Everyone was going on about him being a "walking red card" when he was playing regularly, I think we would have been short changed if he went his whole career here without getting sent off, and I don't think there's any better reason to be sent off than essentially punching Costa in the face.

Cost us that day at Arsenal with a rash challenge which wasn't needed.

Merging Cultures Posted 21 September 2016 Posted 21 September 2016 It looks like he wanted to go arm to arm with him, but then his hand slips off Costa's elbow and smacks him in the face. Clearly unintentional. As for people calling him a 'walking red card', people have been saying that since he arrived and he hasn't been. However, he is too slow and won't feature again for us I don't think.

Cost us a point in a game which quite clearly played a massive role in us going on to win the league. Man knew what he was doing. He'll be back and he'll get one Hell of a send off on the final day against Bournemouth if this is indeed his final season. Cult Hero.

Never suggested he should get away with it. It was a bad foul. But it is patently clear that he didn't intend to hit him in the face.

As I say it's irrelevant and not worth the discussion but i certainly don't think it's as simple as his arm slipping off his elbow. Marcin likes to throw his arms about.

Milo Posted 21 September 2016 Posted 21 September 2016 Loveable liability...probably not what we need, tbh!
The Horse's Mouth Posted 21 September 2016 Posted 21 September 2016 it is a bit hilarious the kind of stuff he's gotten away with for us and that's the actual one where he gets sent off

kingcarr21 Posted 21 September 2016 Posted 21 September 2016 Love the bloke and always will. Yes it was stupid and it ruined the game but meh. Not bothered. It's very satisfying to see Costa get smacked in the face. He has been a great servant for us.
Samilktray Posted 21 September 2016 Posted 21 September 2016 If you're gonna get sent off for punching Costa at least make it a worthwhile punch. May as well have stroked him.

foxy boxing Posted 21 September 2016 Posted 21 September 2016 can't see him being with us next season, a great guy but always uses his elbow and you just can't do that anymore. we need to sigtn top quality defenders
RastaDog Posted 21 September 2016 Posted 21 September 2016 Intentional or otherwise, it was very rash. He rushed in, brain out, like he has before. But whatever, we all f-up at times. Last appearance? Maybe, maybe not. It was obvious his days with us were numbered even before this. He's not one for the future. His age tells us that. It might relegate him to the bench for the FA cup tie(s) though. Tbh, I'm a little lost as to CR's thinking re CBs.
The Doctor Posted 21 September 2016 Posted 21 September 2016 Anyone calling him a liability and a walking red card is being ridiculous - 70 odd games, 3 years and that's his first sending off - putting him about level with Wes in terms of appearances per red card. Besides, he dealt with batushyi fairly well I thought - only once Costa came on that he really started to struggle - against your burnleys, watfords and Sunderlands he's more than suitable. Not a top end prem CB but he's 36 and 4th choice - is anyone seriously expecting him to be? Probably would have got away with it too if costa wasn't such a drama queen - from the back it just looked like a collision.
Jazzy_Jeff Posted 21 September 2016 Posted 21 September 2016 Absolutely love the man but he's a liability at the level we are now operating. I'd keep him around though as his experience is invaluable.
