davieG Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 Image copyrightPA Women should regard wolf-whistling as a compliment, Joanna Lumley has said. In an interview with the Daily Mirror, she said wolf-whistlers were saying: "Cor, you look all right darlin'." Ms Lumley added: "What's wrong with that?" The 70-year-old - an actor, presenter, campaigner, and former model - claimed people had become "sensitive flowers" who were "very offended by everything". In July, Nottinghamshire Police said wolf-whistling could be a hate crime. In the interview, Ms Lumley said people had been "tougher" in the 1960s. "When I was modelling, photographers were much ruder," she said. "They'd say: 'You look frightful, what's the matter with you?', 'You look podgy, you look fat as a pig.' "It was good-natured banter. You kind of got on with it, it didn't upset you." 'A bit of banter' Last month, Nottinghamshire Police said they had recorded 11 misogynistic hate crimes since April, which covers offences including harassment, kidnapping, possession of weapons and causing public fear, alarm or distress. There were also 19 misogynistic "hate incidents", which cover behaviour less serious than a criminal act such as name calling and offensive jokes. In Worcester in April, a 23-year-old woman reported wolf-whistling builders to the police. The police said it was a matter for the men's employers. A builder involved called the wolf-whistling "a bit of banter". Ms Lumley was unavailable for comment when contacted by the BBC on Wednesday.

Well her saying that, makes quite a change from everything being labelled as offensive these days, so in this case, I'm welcoming her comments (though I typically don't like the word 'banter', urgh).
MPH Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 Hmm... I think Joanna Lumley is a confident, strong and secure woman. Some women are not. Having said that, its going WAY over the top to call it a hate crime... It would be nice i think if we just lived in a society where ( IMHO) men just realized it was a little bit inappropriate to wolf whistle at a women on the street..
ScouseFox Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 too right i buzz for the rest of the day when folk whistle at me walking to work

The Blur Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 I do not see anything wrong with bit of wolf whistling, I bet women are not averse to checking out men discreetly themselves. Fair enough if it happened between two employers at a work place or in circumstances where all parties see other each on a regular basis. On the other hand, cracking down on wolf whistling might help some narrowed mind men to realise women are more than sex playthings and encourage them to get out of this men are the dominant sex mentality.
boots60 Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 Wolf whistling in Nottingham is not so much a hate crime as a sign of fading eyesight. I know there is a high woman to man ratio in the east midlands second city but there ain't too many miss world's
Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 I identify sexually and emotionally as a wolf even though I'm trapped in a humans body physically. In my opinion "wolf-whistling" is species appropriation and should be made a hate crime as to not offend me and the rest of my pack. Anyone who disagrees with me is lupist (racist against wolf kind).
Guest MattP Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 It certainly isn't a hate crime, for a start it's not hate. If you do wolf-whistle at random women you are a tosser though.
Buce Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 Wow! 70? You'd have to be gay to not want to do her.

fuchsntf Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 I belong to the tosser type....Its a damn poor world if guys on a building site, are banned from making wolf-whistles. Or anywhere from distance. Even from girls from office windows... Not physical approachment, not office/workplace banter openly towards an intended target. I seen an article once when a couple of young women complained about guys trying to chat them up in a bar, then later in a night club ( different guys) Sorry why..!!! If over persistent I would understand. Aye why not stop flirting across the room, from women, or ctc tv to control men or women making passes.Lets stop it all and go for the eastern promises of arranged marriages. I stopped understanding this world when they eventually stopped the caveman and club courting method... Another light has been extinguished....

Adster Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 Not every girl is as strong as you, Joanna. It's definitely not a hate crime but it should be cracked down on. Anyone who does it needs to FOAD imo.

Wymsey Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 I actually had to do detention for wolf-whistling towards a young woman who was outside the gates whilst in the school playground. Did it twice, same teacher caught me. Said it was very disrespectful.

Guest MattP Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 Just having a dig through the national crime survey statistics and having a look at "hate crime" - about 1% of hate crimes in Britain were recorded as bicycle thefts, do people really have their bikes nicked on the basis of their race, religion or sexuality? If I were cynical I'd say some people might be claiming that in order for it to get a bit more attention from the Old Bill from your average bike theft.

Kitchandro Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 On the one hand I think she's totally right. Women would in fact get more respect if they weren't so sensitive to such things. It's much more attractive when a woman can take a bit of banter, sexual or otherwise. On the other hand, men who wolf whistle at strangers are generally scumbags so I wouldn't be too bothered for them to be convicted of a hate crime.
