influencing the ref - calling for cards

Recommended Posts

debating this with my mrs, i thought it was actually illegal for a player to try and call for a card to be given as i saw several Atletico players and even their manager calling for him to hand out cards for certain challenges ? am i right or wrong ? as i'm sure i've seen it happen before

TIA :)

La Liga teams seem to get away with this in their own league and in the Champions League.

Atletico are well versed at the 'dark arts' of influencing the ref through play acting, card brandishing and intimidation. It was very successful tonight, enabling them to win a non penno and helping nullify Vardy by faking a dive every time he even thought about challenging them.

I see nothing wrong with it.

Never understood why we in this country get butt hurt over card waving managers and players. Managers and players appeal for everything as it is. From penalties to cheap fouls to handballs to more minutes added on, on top of diving. But weirdly card waving crosses a line.

If I was q football manager I'd definitely be an imaginary card waving bellend. If someone commits a bad foul on my player you better believe I want that player booked or sent off.

Bunch of Spanish dogs what do you expect.

All their clubs and players are the same. Overrated league, overrated players, overrated clubs.

It's a tough one as different refs view it differently, Simeone has been known to get a red throughout his career and that continues even as a manager when he gets carried away.

I'd be cautious about our coaches doing the same approach as its almost guaranteed with the "British" reputation we'd get done for it,

But no it is bullshit and shouldn't happen, Simeones main interest early doors seemed to be persuading the ref to book Vardy - at least the ref didnt book him or Ndidi as that could have really cramped us for next week

Sanchez and Ramsey were really at it at the Emirates last season, I think Sanchez claimed the ref fee for that day, it always feels that if an 18 year old debutant does it he'll get booked whereas if an established "star" player does it he gets away with it.

Let's not move attention away from the referee. It's he who is the cheat.

If we're going to have a go at players for diving the that's a different matter. But I expect our players to call for a card if it's warranted.

What I don't accept is 1) diving and 2) referees being dishonest and giving decisions that they know are not correct.

There were many, many decisions that no one could excuse and they all went against us. It's so typical of European Football.

Dissent -  Public disagreement (verbal and/or physical) with a match official’s decision; punishable by a caution (yellow card)

IFAB Laws of the game 2016/7

Is it dissent though? Surely they are trying to encourage the decision instead of disagreeing with it?

I don't have a particular problem with it, if they shouted it instead of waving an imaginary card there would be little uproar, it's up to the referee to judge it for himself. Simeone wanted Vardy booked a couple of times and it didn't happen.

I hope we do it next week. if you can't beat em, join em.

We did try to match them in the diving stakes but kept getting caught. Mahrez got caught diving in the area and god knows how many times Okazaki dived and got nothing. Poor lad was trying his best to get a free kick around their penalty area.

Hopefully with the home crowd we can apply pressure on the ref next week then.

the ref should have the bollux to go into each dressing room before kick off and tell the teams he wont stand for that kind of behaviour.

managers can perhaps get away with it as they arent directly involved in the game but as for the players, its just childish and patronising towards the referee.

knew it was gonna be like that against atletico and indeed any spanish team but it doesnt help when the ref is weak/corrupt:ph34r:

There isn't anything that it would come under as far as I can see reading through the LOTG, still punishable under dissent IMO. Referees shouldn't be influenced, if they decide to not card someone and you have someone from the opposing team shouting in the refs ear to do so and waving cards, that's dissent.

Simeone is brilliant. World class. It's not like he's managing a super power club. Atletico are a great club but he has taken them to a whole new level. His style is uncompromising and not easy on the eye but it's a winning formula.

I'm a big fan of Simeone.

It's punishable by a yellow card. Unfortunately, it's one of those rules that gets highlighted at the start of the season, then everyone forgets about it.

Foreign players do it in the Premier League and they get booked, because we're English and won't stand for a 'bad old sport, chap'.

The most infuriating thing for me tonight, and I mentioned it in the match thread, why is the 5th official on the same side of the goal as the lino?

Seriously?

Put him on the other side of the goal. Surely that's common sense?

He might have even seen that the penalty was outside the box.

Also, Griezmann is not worth £85m at alllol

Griezmann is brilliant - effectively made and scored a goal that might yet win the contest - and was only contained later by the tactical nouse and initiative of Shakespeare and by the players who followed his instructions so faithfully.

I agree totally. Can't see why the ref isn't offended by players/managers doing it. I would walk over and book the twat and calmly say, "That's my job, keep out of it!" The ref had no balls, as shown with the Riyad penalty decision... It's either a penalty, or a dive, in which case you book the player. He did neither.... and this is the quality of refereeing on display at the highest level of European football. Absolute joke
